Dog Care 101: Tip #160: The Benefits of Coconut Oil For Dogs
Best Bully Sticks knows that when it comes to dogs, there’s no such thing as a miracle drug. There just seems to be some issues dog owner’s deal with sometimes. However, there’s been a lot of talk lately about supplements, oils and such. But how do you make sense of it all? This week BBS will take you through the amazing benefits of coconut oil and you just might be surprised at what it will do for your dog!
What is Coconut Oil?
Coconut oil is produced in tropical regions like Jamaica, the Philippines, Thailand, Fiji and Mexico. There are few different ways in which coconut oil is produced, but we’re going to talk about “virgin” coconut oil, which is made from fresh coconuts. This type of oil is hand pressed using traditional methods of baking to dry, then pressed, then heated to remove all water. The mixture then ferments, which removes the natural oils from the water. Good quality coconut is colorless when liquidized.
Coconut oil’s health benefits are derived from the medium-chain triglycerides present in the oil. Former University of Maryland biochemist and dietary fats researcher Mary Enig, PhD says, “The lauric acid in coconut oil is used by the body to make the same disease-fighting fatty acid derivative monolaurin that babies make from the lauric acid they get from their mothers’ milk. The monoglyceride monolaurin is the substance that keeps infants from getting viral, bacterial, or protozoal infections.”
Benefits
Coconut oils haven’t been tested in scientific clinical trials for their benefits for dogs, but the testimonials from dogs owners have been hard to ignore. Take Bob Ansley in Shallotte, North Carolina, who started feeding his “incredibly smelly” Black Lab, Smokey Joe, the coconut oil he drains from his wok after frying eggs, sausages, and other foods.
“Joe’s coat shined up,” says Ansley, “but the real surprise was that he stopped stinking. He has always smelled really bad, and bathing was a waste of time. For years when I petted him, I had to hold my hands away from my clothes and go wash my hands soon and thoroughly. My wife and kids wouldn’t touch him. Now I can pet him and rub him like he craves without having to run and wash up. The stench is gone and we didn’t even change his bedding. I’m pretty amazed. The cure was cheap, too!”

Hello, do you give your hounds coconut milk daily?
I give it to them every other day. We do homemade yogurt and I alternate them.
K, TY!
about to start my dogs on coconut oil smell loads better than fish oil hehe.
Been giving to my Bichons 1/4 tsp twice a day (I'm going to cut back to once a day b/c one of them has started scratching). One of my boys had 6 sebaceous cysts on his back. 4 of them (including a giant one) disappeared in 5 days & the others are tiny now.
Thanks for the info!!
My dog is not a fan, but I'm desperate. She's started scratching A LOT, her vet didn't find anything wrong, so this is my next step except she doesn't want to eat it
(((( Any tricks you can share?
Have you tried Salmon Oil?
Try melting it an putting with her food.
I just purchased some tonight. Not this brand but another. Butch, my profile picture, has demodex mange that will not go away. He can not use the cheaper of the med's since it almost killed him. The really expensive med is not currently being manufactured and how safe is it to keep him on heartworm med's for an extended period of time. So someone suggested to give organic extra virgin coconut oil a try. He's so itchy from the mites I thought what the heck, it's not toxic so it can't hurt and he smells really good. I'll bookmark this page and come back in a week to let everyone know how it works!
Great info…
I feed 2 table spoons of virgin coconut oil for my olde english bulldogges every day, mixed into their food.
