Dog Training - How To Be the Alpha Pack Leader: 101 Dog Care Tips- Tip 65

alphadog In a natural dog pack their is always an alpha that serves as leader or top dog, the same concept rings true for parent child relationship in families. Like children, a dog needs discipline and expects a leader, and if it doesn’t recognize you as the alpha dog, it will assume the responsibility itself. Dogs crave boundaries and need discipline, rules & limitations. Dogs that are trained to recognize their human’s superiority and leadership are much happier, calm submissive, better adjusted and well behaved. Here are a few tips to let your dog know in a non-aggressive & loving manner, who's really boss.

1. Say "NO" to Growling. Enforce a zero tolerance policy against growling. Growling can be an indication that your dog wants to be the dominate alpha in the pack. Tell your dog no if he growls at you because the dog senses he can dominate you by growling. Walk through entrances first before your pet to show leadership.

2. Prevent the dog from sleeping with you. This is also an alpha position. If you must, then let the dog sleep at your feet.

3. Socialize Your Pet. Take your dog to public places such as the park to be with different people and pets. Exposing your pet to public places teaches your pet social nicety and respect towards others and you.

4. Praise Good Doggy Behavior & Correct Bad. Petting your dog and saying "it's okay" while she admonishes somebody with a growl teaches her wrong behaviors.

5. Pack Leader Eats First. Grant your dog's eating time after you've finished a meal because the pack leader always eats first. Permit him to eat when you say so. Give commands like "Sit" before you initiate feeding or even playtime.

6. Take Control of the Leash. When you are walking your dog make sure to lead the way with the leash like a pack leader would take the lead in the hunt. Don't let your dog tug at the leash.
