The Pomeranian - The Little Pom

PomeranianThe Pomeranian is a distinctive looking small toy sized dog often known as a Pom or Pom Pom. This breed is of the Spitz type and is named after the Pomeranian region of Central Europe. This tiny dog is descended from the larger German Spitz dog and the breed was really made popular as the pet of royalty in the 17th century when Queen Victoria owned one.

The Pomeranian is a very distinctive dog with its wedge-shaped head and short muzzle. But the most distinctive thing about this animal is its thick, double coat. It has an outer coat which is long and straight but harsh in texture whilst the undercoat is soft, thick and short in comparison. The dog’s coat can come in a variety of different colors and patterns including red, orange, white, cream, black, brown and tan.

For such a tiny animal, the Pom really is lively! As a breed the dog is proud, intelligent, loyal and eager to learn from its owner and family. The Pom makes an ideal companion and a competitive show dog. The Pomeranian has a lovely, docile temperament with an endless supply of affection for its owner. If you want a dog to cuddle and keep you company, the Pomeranian really is the dog for you!

As well as looking incredibly cute and cuddly, the breed is also surprisingly alert, active and inquisitive. It is actually one of the most independent of the Toy breed and will become naughty if not trained properly from an early age. In order to control and train this dog you need to have a firm yet gentle hand as its liveliness could get out of hand. The Pomeranian is one of the most well-liked dogs within the Toy breed as it has endless amounts of spirit and character.

One thing to watch out for when deciding on a Pomeranian is that they can be really picky eaters, but once you’re used to that it shouldn’t be too much of a problem. If you have other pets already, bringing a Pom home shouldn’t be a problem as long as they are introduced properly. You might not think it but these dogs also make really good little watch dogs and will bark when someone’s at the door if you teach them too early on enough.

Although Poms are affectionate and love their owners, they are not clingy like some other Toy breeds. They are also good at learning tricks and will take instruction really well. As Poms are really small and cute a lot of people will let them get away with bad behavior and baby them but this will only lead to behavioral problems. Don’t let your dog get away with unacceptable behavior just because it’s small as it may develop Small Dog Syndrome which is hard to solve. Due to the size of this breed, the Pomeranian is the perfect companion for an elderly person.

The Pomeranian breed is prone to several different health problems. Specific health problems include dislocated knee-caps, heart problems, eye infections, skin irritations, tooth decay and early loss. Most vets will recommend that you feed your pet of dry dog food or crunchy milk bones on a daily basis to help keep teeth and gums in good condition. When the dog gets older it is also prone to bald spots.

Pomeranians need a daily walk and although they tend to play a lot indoors they also need to get outside. Dogs that do not get enough exercise are more likely to develop behavioral issues later on in life. Give them dog toys to play with to make the exercise more fun!

The Pomeranian’s distinctive coat needs to be brushed frequently to prevent matting and to keep it looking shiny. When you get a Pom you need to be aware that they will constantly shed so if you have allergies or are particularly house proud you may want to re-think your choice!

Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed: Hooray for Maxwell the Great Pyrenees

We always love getting emails from our customers & readers asking us to feature their dog or favorite breed for our Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed blog series every Thursday. As always we are honored to oblige. We are excited to spotlight the Great Pyrenees and honor Maxwell.

The Handsome Great Pyrenees...Maxwell

Kind Barking's from a Great Pyrenees Pet Owner:

Maxwell is a 3 year old, 140 pound Great Pyrenees, he drools, he sheds, he barks often and loudly... but I wouldn't have it any other way. Maxwell greets each person he meets with a sniff and a tail wag. Hee puts a smile on the faces of everyone he encounters. I once read a quote, I don't know who it is from.. "I have found it true that the Great Pyrenees does nothing in a hurry... especially when it comes to listening to my commands".. this couldn't be more true. There is a running joke on the Great Pyrenees forum I belong to... "If it barks like a Pyr, walks like a Pyr and most of all doesn't listen to you like a Pyr, then It's a Pyr!"

~Leah and Maxwell

Height: Male 27-32 inches, Female 25-29 inches

Weight: Male 100, Female 85 lbs

Coat: The weather resistant double coat consists of a long, flat, thick, outer coat of coarse hair, straight or slightly undulating, and lying over a dense, fine, woolly undercoat. The coat is more profuse about the neck and shoulders where it forms a ruff or mane which is more pronounced in males. Longer hair on the tail forms a plume. There is feathering along the back of the front legs and along the back of the thighs, giving a "pantaloon" effect. The hair on the face and ears is shorter and of finer texture.

Color: Great Pyrenees are white or white with markings of gray, badger, reddish brown, or tan

Appearance: The Great Pyrenees is a large, shaggy white dog with a majestic carriage. Their fluffy coats are deceiving, and while they may appear to be large, heavy animals, they are actually of medium substance and are not considered a giant breed. The head is wedge-shaped with a slightly rounded skull, and should be in proportion with the rest of the body. The eyes are almond-shaped, dark brown, and give the dog a thoughtful expression. The eye rims, nose and lips are black. The coat is either all white or white with yellow, reddish brown, tan or gray. The rear dewclaws should never be removed – they have bones that are functional. The tail is plumed, carried low, and may be carried over the back, "making the wheel," when aroused. When present, a "shepherd’s crook" at the end of the tail accentuates the plume.

Temperament: Great Pyrenees are described as regal dogs. They are thoughtful animals, very observant and vigilant. Their original purpose was to guard flocks and they were charged with making independent decisions about who was a friend and who was potentially dangerous. The modern Pyrenees takes his watchdog role seriously, quietly sizing up newcomers before making a decision. They are fiercely protective of their property, family, and even other household pets. Pyrenees are patient and gentle with kids in their own family, but often don't take kindly to outside children engaging in rough play with their charges.

These gentle giants love to play, and their favorite time to romp and play is after a good snow. Giving them a job to do after a snowstorm, like pulling kids in a sled or hitching the Pyrenees to a cart will keep him occupied for hours.

Health: The life expectancy for a Great Pyrenees is about 10 years. They are prone to bloat, hip dysplasia, bone cancer, luxated patellas and can develop skin problems in hot weather.

The Loving Boston Terrier

Boston TerrierOver the past few years, the Boston terrier has grown in popularity. Thanks to its sweet nature, impeccable intelligence and good attitude, the Boston terrier has now been renamed the ‘American Gentleman’ of dogs.

Boston terriers adore people and love to be a part of the family and be involved in the action. For this reason, it is advisable to only consider having this type of dog if you can commit the time, dedication and love that this particular dog requires from its owner. If you are able to provide him with the environment and commitment that he requires, then a Boston terrier can make the ideal companion and will be utterly devoted, loving and loyal to you. However, if opting to have a Boston terrier puppy, it is vital that you use a trustworthy and experience breeder as if bred from a puppy mill, a Boston terrier may be ill-treated, causing them to form behavioral problems, or even physical conditions.

One of the main benefits of owning a Boston terrier is that they are incredibly easy to train as they are eager to please their owner and are very intelligent. However, as one would expect with any form of dog breed, it is likely that you will encounter some issues along the way as he learns different disciplines and obedience’s. For this reason, it is always advantageous to familiarize yourself with the most effective methods of training for this particular breed. The Boston terrier is also renowned for its fantastic temperament, meaning he will get on well with all members of your family- including small children and any other pets you may have, so long as he is trained to socialize with other animals. However, they can be incredibly trusting of strangers meaning that they may partial to running towards any stranger whom may show them some affection or attention. For this reason, it is imperative that you provide your Boston terrier with a secure environment to play in due to his small stature, he can be hard to keep track of! However, he is also a very homely dog and so will desire to have plenty to keep him occupied when in dogs in the form of dog toys, dog chews and bags of love and affection from his owners.

Boston terriers should ideally be fed around ½ to 1 can of high quality dog food a day, with the occasional biscuit. Alternatively, they also enjoy dry food but with ½ cup of hot or cold water mixed, in order to make a gravy-style meal. Along with a healthy diet, Boston terriers also require frequent exercise in the form of daily walks. Due to their small stature, they do not require heavy exercise but it is important to allow him as much free range of movement as possible in order for thorough and effective exercise. Although this form of dog does not shed his coat, it is beneficial to brush him every day in order to stop his coat from becoming matted and to keep him clean.

With a gently and loving disposition and a sociable attitude towards everyone, the Boston terrier is truly a pleasing dog to own which is why this breed has grown in popularity with many families across the country. By ensuring that you provide him with as much love and affection he shows to you, you are sure to have a forever loyal and attentive companion.
