So we are excited to announce our new Tuesday blog series “Spotlight on a Rescue or Charity", to pay tribute and honor animal rescue, shelters and charities. These are our unsung heroes across America dedicated to enriching, saving and nurturing the lives of animals in need.  We hope you will champion our cause by barking the word about the importance of pet adoption and donating your time and finances to your local animal shelter or rescue. About Animal Rescue League of Boston:

The Animal Rescue League is a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing domesticated animals and wildlife from suffering, cruelty, abandonment, and neglect. Since 1899 we have advocated the philosophy of our founder, Anna Harris Smith, that “Kindness Uplifts the World”.

The Animal Rescue League of Boston will be a leader among animal welfare organizations in providing rescue and law enforcement services and promoting a compassionate and responsible attitude towards all living beings. The Animal Rescue League of Boston envisions a day when all pets are cherished, and animals are no longer threatened with abandonment, neglect, abuse, exploitation, or extinction. The Animal Rescue League of Boston will accomplish its mission by focusing on the following objectives:

Position Statements

The Animal Rescue League of Boston believes that the power and beauty of the animal human bond is intrinsic to efforts to stop all forms of violence in our society.

A fundamental premise of the humane community is that if a child is taught to be kind to animals, there is a greater likelihood that the individual will mature into a person who respects not only humanity, but also all living things. This premise has been the subject of sociological studies and is expressed in literature and the arts. With a deep belief in this premise, Animal Rescue League of Boston founder Anna Harris Smith initiated a humane education program for children by establishing The Kindness Clubs in the neighborhoods of Boston.

Today, the League believes that it must leverage its reputation, programs, and financial resources to be part of a larger effort to stop violence in our communities and in our world. They know that animals, with their ability to give us unconditional love, can be a powerful force to bring reason, order, and a sense of truth and beauty to a world in desperate need of civilization.

Gesundheit! Spring time has sprung and so has seasonal allergies. If you are a pet owner and allergy sufferer then you understand firsthand that dealing with seasonal and pet allergies simultaneously is no walk in the dog park. However, many pet owners suffering from non-life threatening allergies would rather live with minor sneezing & sniffles then live without their beloved pet. That is why it is no surprise that for many allergic animal lovers getting rid of their furry companion is out of the question. For some the benefits of pet ownership outweighs the drawbacks of suffering from pet allergies and plowing through a jumbo pack of Kleenex each day. Love your pet but sick of sneezing & watery eyes? No need to shed anymore of those allergy tears or pack your pet's bag. Here are some quick and simple tips to make living with seasonal and pet allergies more bearable & less miserable for you. Fido and Felix you can thank us later!

1. Bathe Your Pet. Tame dander allergens by bathing pets, removing the allergens that accumulate in fur. Be careful not to bathe too often, as frequent bathing can dry out your pet's coat. Ask your vet or groomer for the safest products for your specific pet.

2. Create "Allergy free No-Pet" Zones. If you do have pet allergies, keep pets out of at least one room, preferably the bedroom. It is a waste of time to hang a "No Pets Allowed" sign on your bedroom door, since your pet can't read. Keeping your pet out of your bedroom is gonna require some strong persuasion and training, it's time to call in reinforcements, delicious treats. When you are not at home make sure to close doors of rooms you do not want your pet entering. Also, hypoallergenic fabrics and materials and high-efficiency HEPA allergen-removing air cleaner in your "no-pet zone."

3. Clean Your Home. Vacuum frequently by using a vacuum equipped with a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate arresting) filter or a disposable electrostatic bag. Remember to also regularly steam-clean all in-house fabrics, including curtains, upholstery and rugs. Avoid dust-and-dander-catching furnishings such as cloth curtains and blinds and carpeted floors. Clean frequently and thoroughly to remove dust and dander, washing articles such as couch covers and pillows, curtains, and pet beds. And clean the dreaded kitty litter. You may also want to consider getting rid of carpet which traps large amounts of allergens.  Instead replace the majority of your floor surfaces with mop-able hardwood floors, tiles, or even linoleum, the better off you’ll be.

4. Consider Hypoallergenic Dogs. If you are craving pet companionship but suffer from pet allergies no worries. Hypoallergenic dogs, especially the smaller ones, usually don't shed or produce as much dander and have a different pH level in their hair, making these pets more habitable with allergic parents.

Recognized as one of the giant dog breeds, the Great Dane is a dog which demands respect and admiration for its exceptional beauty and stature. Great Danes are almost instantly recognizable due to their great size although they are not particularly heavy dogs, as one would expect. Their beautiful physique has earned them the nickname, ‘Apollo of Dogs’ and the fantastic personality of a Great Dane has made them an incredibly popular dog with many families due to the abundance of love, affection and friendliness they give to their family.

According to statistics, a male Great Dane will be at least 34 inches in height, with the average Dane measuring at close to three feet in height. How a Great Dane’s physique develops with primarily depend on his or her gender; for example, a male Dane can complete all phases of his development within three years, whereas a female Dane will completed development within just 12 months or even less. Great Danes will remain as puppies for around 18 months and after this period of time, owners will witness a great change in their Danes’ mental and physical maturities in the 10 months that follow.

As with all dog breeds, it is imperative that a Dane is provided with a healthy diet and regular, proper exercise. A Great Dane’s diet should be consistent, with dog food portions being measured and monitored, according to his or her current age and weight in order to promote good health. It is essential that a Great Dane maintains a healthy weight as underweight Danes can become vulnerable to sickness and disease, whereas an overweight and unhealthy Dane will have an increased risk of heart diseases and uncomfortable bloating.

Due to their large stature, Great Danes require plenty of room in with to run and play. As puppies, a Dane requires a great deal of exercise and stimulation in order to keep him fit and help eliminate boredom. Taking him for long walks, playing games such as catch and fetch and providing him with various dog toys and dog chews will all help him develop and remain occupied. These sorts of activities are also great for helping to teach your Dane obedience, good behavior and will also help to strengthen the bond between master and dog. As they are able to interact with children well, Great Danes make for an ideal family pet. Similar to children, Great Danes possess curious and trusting characteristics meaning that they are welcoming to children in the home. If you have children, it is important to teach them how to handle your Dane correctly but due to their great temperament, this type of dog will not become aggressive unless provoked.

By being provided with vast amounts of love, affection and a combination of regular exercise and a great diet, a Great Dane can live to be up to 8 years old. However, if a healthy lifestyle is followed, some Danes can even live to be up to 12 years of age. With the correct love and affection, these dogs can become a loving addition to your family a fantastic companion for children and adults alike.

The German Shorthaired Pointer was developed in Germany during the 19th century as can be seen by the name. Initially the breed was developed as an all-purpose gundog due to its exceptional skills in game finding, pointing and retrieving. The German Shorthaired Pointer is the perfect companion for any hunter as the dog is alert, intelligent and has an amazing sense of smell that is ideal for hunting game.

The GSP takes instruction very well which is another reason why it is the perfect hunting companion and works harder than most working dogs of a similar size. It can work on both open ground and water with equal enthusiasm making it a truly versatile animal in the field. As a breed, the GSP is loyal and level-headed which makes it great as a hunter but also a brilliant pet. The dog is endearing to all members of the family and has a protective nature that is without aggression which makes it the perfect addition to any family home.

Even though the German Shorthaired Pointer makes a great pet, it is important to remember that this dog is essentially a working gundog with a lot of energy. Therefore, it needs to be exercised daily in order to keep both mind and body active and healthy. GSP’s are highly trainable due to their hunting origins and will prove very loyal pets if treated with love and care. If you do not have the time or the space to exercise your pet then the German Shorthaired Pointer is not for you. This breed will not be happy as a lap dog or a flat dweller and may develop behavioral issues later in life. The breed does love children and people in general so you should have no problems socializing your pet.

As soon as you look at a German Shorthaired Pointer you can tell that they are renowned for their power, speed and steady nature. Energetic-looking and powerful with adequate muscles, this medium sized dog has an impressive bone composition and a coat that gives the animal a thoroughbred appearance.

Although the German Shorthaired Pointer is powerful and active, they are also approachable and gentle towards humans and other animals. They are not nervous or unpredictable and make great pets for families. They love to play and the more energetic the better so make sure you have enough dog toys and time to devote to exercising your pet on a regular basis. Exercise is also very important for mental stimulation with this breed.

As these dogs are shorthaired their coat does not take too much looking after. You will have to brush them on a regular basis with a firm brush though and keep bathing to only when it is absolutely necessary. Being shorthaired these dogs don’t shed so are perfect for those with allergies. Always have the right dog supplies at hand to deal with this. If your dog takes part in working exercise it is essential to check their feet and ears afterwards to make sure that everything is ok in that area.

Due to the nature of the work they were developed for, German Shorthaired Pointers are relatively tough health animals and suffer from few health problems. However, if your dog is involved in hunting activities you need to be careful about the spread of bacteria and fungi from coming into contact with the game.

The German Shorthaired Pointer has a longer life expectancy than other dogs of this size and most live up to 14 years with no problems. This means that you can enjoy many years with this loyal and affectionate pet!
