They're cute and cuddly, although a huge responsibility a dog can also be very beneficial to your family. Sure pet ownership has its challenges but it is all worth it when love is reciprocated with an over abundance of licks, wags and pure adoration.  They truly live up to their title as "Man's Best Friend" in more ways then one. While it is true that dog's dish out tons of unconditional love and loyalty, they also provide real health benefits to their care takers. Here are a few benefits:

1. Low Blood Pressure. Dog owners have lower blood pressure. Several studies have shown that the simple act of stroking a dog can reduce blood pressure. More recent studies have found that these effects continue throughout the day when people are away from their dog as well. Dog owners cope with stress better and lowered blood pressure is a result of that relationship between a dog and his human.

2. Low Cholesterol. Dog owners have lower cholesterol levels than non-dog owners. They are at less risk of developing heart disease or other cardiovascular problems. In fact, studies show that dog owners overall are healthier than the general population. This can be partially explained by regular walks with the family dog.

3. Happier & Less Grumpy. Dog owners are happier in general. Your pup can turn any frown upside down. It hard to be sad when you look into those puppy eyes. Dog ownership has been shown to reduce loneliness and fight depression in their owners. When people are not lonely and depressed they are happier. Dogs can cause happiness in humans, in part, by causing the release of endorphins in the brain, which are natural anti-depressants produced by the human body. With this increase in mental health, quality of life is increased respectively.

4. Live Longer. Dog owners live longer. Because dog owners cope with stress better and do not suffer from depression as often; they are more likely to live longer. While being happy will not heal a person it can keep them from becoming ill in the first place. Pets provide companionship, healthy relationships and become topics of conversation which aid in social interactions with others. Dogs also increase self esteem and cause humans to feel more compassion for others. All of these factors combined have a dramatically positive effect on the day to day happiness of dog owners.

5. Higher Survival Rates. Dog owners have higher survival rates after serious illness. Some studies have shown that heart attack patients with dogs are twice as likely to be alive one year after their heart attack than their no-dog owning peers. Some experts even believe that dogs affect survival rates to a greater extent than friends or family members. This is most likely explained by the patient’s desire to get better because they feel they need to in order to care for their dog.

Westie - West Highland White Terrier

Height: Male 11 inches; Female 10 inches

Weight: 15-21 lbs

Coat: The West Highland White Terrier has a weatherproof double coat. The outer coat is straight, long, harsh and wiry. The under coat is dense, short, fluffy, and soft. Their coat is brilliant white in color and lends to this breed an elegant look. They are moderate shedders.

Color: White

Appearance: The West Highland White Terrier is a compact dog with an all-white coat and a button black nose. The skull is wide and round, the muzzle blunt and a slightly shorter than the skull. There is a defined stop. The eyes are dark with a keen, intelligent expression. The teeth should ideally meet in a scissors or level bite. The ears are wide-set and sit erect on the side of the skull. The topline is level and the Westie is slightly longer than he is tall. The tail is 5 to 6 inches in length and carried gaily over the back. The white coat is two inches long and should never be soft or silky to the touch.

Temperament: he West Highland White Terrier is hardy and compact, self assured, energetic, spunky, curious, fearless, tenacious, spirited and well adjusted. They have attained the status of being one of the most popular breeds. They are intelligent and usually display good manners. The Westie is playful but can also be quiet and determined. They are devoted to their family, but are not very interested in being cuddled. They alert to danger by barking and are good watchdogs. They will bark at the slightest noise they hear, but after they are done barking at your guests, they will greet friends with a polite wag of the tail and then go about their business. The Westie is a wonderful family pet that prefers to be the only pet in the home. Westies get along well with other family dogs and enjoy playing with older children. They get along with children over the age of ten who are well behaved.

They can be demanding and assertive, and exhibit true terrier traits. They have a tendency to snap when irritated. The West Highland White Terrier is a social, fun loving breed that does best in an active and attentive household. These little dogs need plenty of walks and interactive play time, and like to be fully involved in all household activity. They are curious and like to get into everything, poking around in closets, cabinets and perching at the window to keep up on the neighborhood happenings. They still possess a strong desire to hunt rodents, so if you live in the suburbs or on a farm, you can be assured your property will remain pest-free, but beware, he is likely to present his “prizes” to you as a gift. They are a versatile dog, who make great companions for families of all sizes and ages.

Health: The life expectancy for a Westie  is over 15 years. Prone to chronic hernias, liver disease, Legg Perthes disease (hip problems), jawbone calcification and skin problems.

Whether they are provided with a tasty chew or a bone, this addition into their diet is not only a great way to treat them, but is also a fantastic way in which to praise them for great obedience or learning a new trick or discipline. However, as a dog owner it is important that you are fully aware of which type of dog treat is best suited for your dog to ensure that he gets only the best in terms of vitamins and nutrients and that you get the most for your money.

Dog bones provide a myriad of benefits for dogs aside from acting as a form of entertainment. Gnawing on dog bones can help to satisfy the craving to chew that many dogs possess, helping to stop your dog from chewing on items or furniture within the home. Secondly, giving your dog a bone on a regular basis can help to remove plaque from their teeth, control the level of tartar in the mouth and stimulate their gums which in turn, can help stave off gum disease. For young puppies, chewing dog bones can also help to relieve the pain and discomfort associated with teething. As many dog owners will find, providing your dog with a treat such as a dog bone is also a great form of entertainment and you will find he is kept happy for hours as he chomps away on his treat.

There are a number of different dog bones on the market at the moment and most dogs will possess a specific chewing behavior, meaning that some types of bones may not be suitable for them. If your dog is somewhat of a devourer, you may want to invest in a dog bone which cannot be demolished in mere seconds. In this case, it is advantageous to purchase a nylon based dog bone which is sturdier and will be harder for him to consume in quick succession. You can also purchase a number of specially made long-lasting bones which are beneficial for eager dogs. Natural beef bones can be found with a range of different fillings which are ideal for picky dogs and are also renowned for being long lasting.

If your dog is a little less eager to demolish his dog bone, it is advantageous to look into buying him a rawhide bone which over time will become soft. These can be found in a range of shapes which vary from the traditional dog bone which makes them ideal to be used as a form of toy and treat. However, as this form of dog bone can fall into small pieces easily, it may be worth keeping this treat for inside the home where you can keep an eye on him while he enjoys his treat, and eliminate any blocking or choking.

Similar to humans, dogs can have days where they are disinterested in a certain type of flavor one day and love it the next, so it is a good idea to purchase a number of dog bone types for your special friend to keep him happy. Not only will the frequent ingesting of a dog bone strongly help his dental health and keep him happy and healthy, but it could potentially save you money as he is less interested in chewing on your shoes or furniture! So, treat your dog with a range of fun and tasty dog bones he will enjoy for hours!
