If you think only cats love the fishy taste of tuna, then think again! Dogs can't resist a good catch of the day even if it is out of a can. My dog Sushi has a affinity for fish, salmon, mackerel, tuna, you name it. So we came across Doggie Tuna Casserole, one of America's classic comfort foods,  that is sure to be a paw pleaser for your dog. Its even tasty enough for you to eat, so save a few pots and pans and enjoy this one pan wonder with your dog.  Tuna has such great health benefits, it is very high in protein, Vitamin D, and is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids.

Ingredients:

1 ½ cups whole wheat elbow noodles, cooked
1 cup low-fat milk
1 cup mixed cheese, grated (any cheese will work, I use cheddar and Monterey Jack)
1 cup fresh broccoli, chopped very well
1 cup of peas
8 oz. canned tuna or salmon, drained (Be sure to save the water to make a batch of Pupsicles.)
3 tbsp wheat germ plain
½ cup dried whole wheat bread crumbs (Sometimes I will take their kibble and grind that up to to mix into the meal, it all depends on what you have on hand.)

Directions:

1. Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees.
2. Spray a casserole dish with non-stick spray.
3. Blend everything together well in your casserole dish.
4. Sprinkle bread crumbs or crushed kibble on top. (If you are gonna dine & chow down with your dog over some tuna casserole you will probably want to leave off the kibble crumbs)
5. Bake until cheese is melted and bubbling.
6. Cool and serve. Chow done, chow hound!!

This dish will keep in the refrigerator for three days, and if you have any left you can freeze it. However, I would not freeze it for too long because I've never had any left. I usually only make enough for a few days.

***Always check with your vet about which foods are appropriate & safe for you to share with your pet since your dog may be on a special diet.

About The Washington Animal Rescue League (WARL)

Founded in 1914, the League is the oldest animal shelter in the District of Columbia.

The Washington Animal Rescue League, founded in 1914, opened the first animal shelter in Washington, D.C. for stray and abused dogs, cats, and horses.  Through the shelter, the League also provided free veterinary care for those who could not afford it and held an annual Christmas food drive for companion animals and working horses.

Having outgrown its O Street, NW, quarters, the League moved to 71 Oglethorpe Street, NW, in 1977.  The Medical Center was built in 1996 to serve the shelter animals and continue the League’s tradition of aiding the companion animals of the low-income community.

In 2006, the League completed a revolutionary transformation, making it one of the world’s most progressive animal rehabilitation centers. The shelter was re-designed entirely from the animals’ point of view to promote the physical, mental, and social healing of animals recovering from a previous life of trauma.

Mission

Its mission continues to evolve as conditions change and animals face new and different challenges, but the core of that mission remains unchanged: The mission of the Washington Animal Rescue League is to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome animals who have nowhere else to go. They are committed to strengthening and preserving the human-animal bond by supporting animals in their homes through affordable veterinary care, community outreach, and education.

The Washington Animal Rescue League is known not only for its long history of compassionate care for animals, but for its innovative shelter, which is designed to promote the physical, emotional, and social healing of animals recovering from past traumas, and for the progressive programs that benefit animals and the community.

How can you help WARL?

The Washington Animal Rescue League is supported entirely through contributions of money, time, and in-kind gifts from the public. It does not receive any support from local, state, or federal governments.

Your commitment to the League enables them to carry out our mission to care for today's homeless and abandoned animals and create a brighter future for those who have yet to be born

Adopt a deserving animal from the Washington Animal Rescue League. They find homes for over 1,400 dogs and cats every single year (900 dogs and 500 cats in 2009); about 7,000 dogs and cats come through our doors for medical care and/or adoption annually! They  have a full staff of adoptions coordinators to help you find your perfect match, and our animals are worked with and handled by our staff of behavior and training specialists daily. We take every step possible to make sure our animals find loving, forever homes.

So you have a new addition to your family, a dog. Well, now its time for the most important task as a new pet owner. What task? Well,  choosing the right name of course. With so many names to choose from the skies the limit. Selecting your dogs name should be fun, not daunting and frustrating.  Here are a few tips on picking the perfect pet name that suits your new dog and cuddly family member.

1. Must Love the Name. Pick a name that you and your dog can live with for a long time. If you are adopting a dog (especially an older pup) from a shelter then it may already come with a name. You can either opt to leave the name (if it ain't broken don't fix it), shorten to nickname or change it entirely to give your dog a new leash on life. These are all great options, whatever you decide, you and your dog must first and foremost love the name. If after a few days your dog is forgetful and does not respond to the new name then you may need to break out the dog name book and start at ground zero.

2. Keep the name short. It is important that your dog is able to learn and remember his or her name. Keep the name to one or two syllables and have it end with a strong consonant so your dog can familiarize his or herself with the name. In doing so, it will be much easier for you to train your dog to come and obey on command. Make sure it is one that will be easy to pronounce and roll off your tongue. Be sure the name is distinct from any command words you'll be teaching your dog (i.e "Noah" is to close to the command "No"). Also, you do not want to confuse your new dog with multiple variations of its name

3. Upbeat Tone. Tone is everything, keep your voice upbeat. One of the most important things in training is to have him, or her, come when called. Make name association fun and enjoyable by associating it with something positive, a walk, delicious treat, or a playful game of fetch. Choosing the right name is the foundation for training your dog. Before you can even begin to teach your dog other basic commands, name recognition should be top priority.
