BBS Breed Spotlight: Bichon Frisé

Best Bully Sticks is highlighting a very delightful dog today, the Bichon Frisé! This little dog is full of energy and extremely loving, not to mention absolutely adorable! The Bichon also has a very interesting background that we were surprised to learn and we hope you are too!

History & Background: The Bichon Frisé is an early descendant from the Portuguese Spaniel and still has a liking toward water and retrieving.  This dog was traded by Spanish sailors and were kept on board many boats as a companion.  Because it visited and was used as barter on many continents, the Bichon became a favorite of many royal courts. Still today, Bichons are known as a great companion dog.

Height: 9 – 12 in (from withers)

Weight: 10 - 20 lbs

Coat: The Bichon has a soft and dense undercoat and a coarser and curlier outer-coat, which together makes this thick but soft to the touch. The coat is springy and velvety. This breed is usually listed as a hypoallergenic dog, which doesn’t shed, but this is somewhat false. The curl in the coat of the Bichon limits the amount of dead hair and dander that will get into the air. Also, the grooming that this dog needs will remove any excess hair. Read more

BBS's Spotlight on a Rescue: S.N.A.R.R. St. Martinville, LA

On Monday, February 27th, Best Bully Sticks ran a 1-Day Animal Rescue Contest.  As always, we had an overwhelming response with close races between several different shelters. This time around we had the honor to donate to S.N.A.R.R., short for Special Needs Animal Rescue Rehabilitation, in St. Martinville, Louisiana. We wanted to know more about this rescue so we researched their amazing rescue work and immediately wanted to share it with our readers.

Although this rescue was started in Louisiana, S.N.A.R.R. has a nation-wide reach with their main mission being to save those dogs, which in any other environment, might be past saving.

“S.N.A.R.R. saves the toughest dogs to place; those with serious medical conditions, deaf and blind dogs, severely emaciated dogs, aggressive dogs— the animals that nobody else wants; the dogs that would otherwise be euthanized,” said Robin Menard, President, Founder and Trainer at S.N.A.R.R.

This passion for rescuing helpless and abused dogs isn’t a recent upswing in goodwill on Robin’s part; it’s a life-long love affair.  She grew up in a neighborhood where Pit Bull fighting was very active, but she took things into her own hands. Read more

101 Dog Care Tips: #154 – How To Read Your Dog’s Food & Treat Ingredient List

Now, more than ever, people are concerned with what’s in their food. So, of course, pet owners are no exception. We want to give those that we love good, nutritious food.  But when you flip the dog food or treat bag over and that glaring block of text is staring back at you, how do you decipher it?

Best Bully Sticks wants to help make sense of your dog’s food or treat ingredient list. Here are a few easy steps to sort through the gibberish that might make up your dog’s food.

1. The First Ingredient says a lot. The first ingredient in your dog’s food or treats is the main ingredient and that one ingredient usually makes up about 80% of the total product. Ingredients are also determined by weight but include any water content that might be present. It’s important to note that without water weight, a “meat” ingredient might be listed lower in the list.

2. Byproduct & Meal versus Meat. First let’s start with some definitions: Read more
