BBS Breed Spotlight: Leonberger

With the look of a lion and the heart of a teddy bear, the Leonberger is a true family companion. This dogs looks might fool you once, but once the kindness of the Leonberger shines, you’ll be a fan for life. BestBullySticks.com thinks you’ll fall in love quite easily. Read more about the Leonberger in the BBS Breed Spotlight!

History & Background: Leonberg, Germany is both the native city and namesake of the Leonberger breed. This dog was the product of the breeding a Landseer Newfoundland and a Saint Bernard predecessor, the “barry” by a prominent citizen of Leonberg, Heinrich Essig in the 1930s. Essig was very fond collecting animals and it’s even thought the dog was bred to resemble the coat of arms of the German town, which was the lion.

This dog was kept as farm dog and excelled as a watchdog and a draft worker. Famous owners of the Leonberger include Napoleon II, the Prince of Wales and other royalty. During the World Wars, this breed suffered greatly and only 5 survived WWI. Again during WWII this breed was almost lost into obscurity. In both wars this dog was used to pull ammunition carts, but was a service that almost cost this dog’s lineage. The modern Leonberger can trace it’s line back to the 8 dogs that survived the wars. Today the Leonberger is still used as a working dog in rescue saving missions.

Height: Males: 28 to 31.5 inches; Females: 25.5 to 29.5 inches

Weight: Males: 120 to 170 pounds; Females: 100 to 135 pounds

Coat: As with many working dogs, the coat is highly functional. The Leonberger has a very abundant, water-resistant, double coat. Shorter hair appears on the muzzle and limbs. The long, heavy coat is highly durable, straight, close-fitting and flat. The outer coat is medium length and soft to coarse in texture. Undercoat is soft and dense, but is less abundant in summer months. Leonbergers have a mane which stretches from around the neck to the chest. This dog sports feathering on the back of legs and ears and the tail is well covered in hair. Read more

Weekly Drool Recipe: Soft & Chewy Oatmeal Dog Treats from Bubby & Bean

When we say our final goodbye to a dear friend, it’s heartbreaking. And though time heals all wounds, BestBullySticks.com knows that you would never want to forget them. Such is the story with many dog lovers, including sisters Melissa & Morgan, the brains behind Bubby & Bean blog. Melissa’s dog, Leary (nicknamed Bubby) passed away a few days before Christmas last year. To remember their sweet Leary, Melissa’s sister Morgan whipped up this recipe in remembrance of him.

Everybody who met that special doggie instantly got a smile on their faces.  He was one of those friends that was always there for you and loved to snuggle.  And like most dogs, Leary LOVED food!  He knew he wasn’t supposed to beg for it, so when we would eat in front of him, he’d stand sideways and look at you out of the corner of his eye.  It cracked me up!  I was always a sucker for one particular look he'd give that made him look like a big soft puppy.  When he gave that look, a french fry or piece of cheese would “accidentally” make its way into his mouth.   He knew exactly how to work his auntie!  And that boy sure did love his cheese.  I even wrote the "For Leary" message in the picture at the top of this post in shredded cheddar, his favorite.

So in honor of Bubby, today I'm going to be showing you how to make a tasty doggie treat that I know he would have loved, and that your best furry friends will gobble up too.  I started making these when my husband and I noticed that our furry little girl Isis (aka the "Bean" in the Bubby and Bean!) had trouble eating hard treats.  They are soft so they’re great for older doggies, or for dogs who prefer softer foods.

This recipe is especially for you, Leary (bubby, bo-bos, roy boy, beezy, licious, and all the other nicknames that were made for you!).   I miss you every day.

Ingredients
1/2 cup – 3/4 cups oatmeal (depending on how dense you want the treats)
1/4 cup powdered milk
2 small jars beef baby food
1 tablespoon peanut butter (either crunchy or smooth works great)

Recipe Note: You can also use Cream of Wheat or wheat germ in place of the oatmeal.

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Combine all ingredients in a medium sized bowl.

3. Shape dough into hearts, bones, or any other doggie themed treat.

4. Place treats on greased cookie sheet or use a silicone baking mat.

5. Cook for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown.

6. Cool.  Store treats in your refrigerator for up to one week (or until your furry kid learns how to open the fridge!).

Thanks to Melissa & Morgan at Bubby & Bean for sharing Bubby’s story, this recipe and photos.

Bone Appétit & Enjoy!
