BBS Breed Spotlight: Harrier

The Harrier is sort of like the middle sibling to the English Foxhound and the Beagle, but only in size. This breed has unique hunting abilities and temperament making it a wonderful and distinct breed. Read more about the Harrier in the BBS Breed Spotlight below!

History & Background: The Harrier has a cloudy ancestry, but more than likely this dog was developed from its close cousins, the English Foxhound. Since Colonial times, the Harrier has been a hunting dog for hare, thus it’s name, and fox as well. Slower than the Foxhound, hunters liked this dog because Harriers ran at a pace that was easy to keep up with, which is called a “drag” hunt. To this day English and Irish hunters still use Harriers to hunt. This dog was recognized by the AKC in 1885.

Height: 40 to 60 pounds

Weight: 19 to 21 inches

Coat: Hard in texture and short in length, the Harrier’s overall coat is dense and glossy. The exception is the dog’s ears where the fur is finer and softer. The underside of the tail has a slight fan of hair.

Color: Not seen as important by breed standards, the Harrier can be shown in any color. Eye color is hazel in darker dogs and lighter in lighter colored dogs. Nose is black. Read more

Weekly Drool Recipe: Loaves of Lamb via Kirby the Dorkie

Traditional Easter lunch or dinner usually consists of ham or lamb. While ham is tasty, BestBullySticks knows that lamb has a lot of health benefits for you and your dog! So if your celebrating Easter with a great meal, don’t leave Fido out! Kirby the Dorkie and his mom, Debby, shared this great lamb dog meal with us for our Easter Edition of the Weekly Drool Recipe!

Lamb, which is great for the coat and skin, is a fatty, calorie dense meat often recommended for lean dogs to gain more weight so you may want to feed this meal sparingly if your dog is borderline chunky like Kirby.

The aroma wafting from the oven kept Kirby in or near the kitchen the entire time just hoping for a bite!

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground lamb
  • 1 cup cooked butternut squash*
  • 1/2 cup ricotta cheese
  • 1 cup crushed tomatoes
  • 1 red bell pepper, seeded and diced
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp sweet mint, finely chopped
  • 3 tbsp parsley, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp light olive oil

Preparation Instructions for Butternut Squash

1. Prepare squash by cutting in half lengthwise, removing seeds, and fibers. Place cut side up in ungreased baking dish. You can season sparingly with a little sea salt and real butter.

2. Pour water in dish until 1/4 inch deep. Cover with foil and bake at 375 degrees for 40 minutes or until tender. Read more

BBS Rescue Spotlight: Masthaven Mastiff Sanctuary

haven |ˈhāvən|, noun: a place of safety or refuge : a haven for wildlife.

Masthaven Mastiff Sanctuary believes that safety for their favorite giant breed dogs is a personal dedication that requires your full self. That’s why this rescue began--to give refuge and solace the full dog; their mind, body and soul and the people of Masthaven Mastiff Sanctuary commit themselves likewise. Read more about this Indiana rescue in BestBullySticks Rescue Spotlight on Masthaven Mastiff Sanctuary.

When & Why did you start?
We have worked in rescue in one way or another for a very long time. We officially created our own Non-Profit Mastiff Sanctuary in Jan 2011 when we were searching for a fawn Mastiff to adopt. I had subscribed to many rescues and shelter feeds and made many great contacts. But we were flooded daily by neglected and abused Mastiffs and realized there was no centrally located rescue in our area for these Gentle Giants and as most people in our area were looking for small dogs, the Giants waiting in shelters were very hard to place and there was no where for them to go. As we continued to get notifications, we soon began coving our entire Tri-State of Indiana, Kentucky and Illinois and now network, rescue & place Mastiffs from Indiana and all surrounding states.

What's different about your rescue?
Our goals remain the same as any other rescue out there. Its all about saving innocent lives and finding wonderful loving homes for these big kids. People tell me that what makes us different is our personal bond and attachment to each one. We love them and mend their spirit and we stay involved for the rest of their lives. We have an open door policy that encourages new families to reach out for questions and assistance and we have been known to babysit when the family has to be out of town. We keep our numbers small enough so that we can give personalized attention to each unique Mastiff and we do not kennel here, so each one truly feels at home. It is always the Mastiff that sets the pace. They tell us when they are ready to adopt a forever family and we do not rush that. We are also very conscious of their sensitivity to change so we personally transport each of our babies and stay in that area to ensure their transition to the new home. Our last adoption took us to Louisiana which under normal circumstances would be too far, however when a Mastiff says that’s his or her perfect home, we listen. They haven’ t led us wrong yet!  Read more

Dog Care 101 Tip #206: Easter Fun with your Dog!

Easter is in less that a week and is a great time to celebrate the coming days of Spring with your dog. BestBullySticks wants to share some fun and easy ways to make this Easter special with your four-legged family member.

Easter Egg Hunt
Your dog can find Easter Eggs, too! Fill break-open Easter Eggs with a bit of peanut butter of your dog’s favorite all natural dog treats. Scatter the eggs around in your yard and let your dog loose! The brightly colored eggs and your dog’s powerful nose will lead him to the hiding places!

Go to the Park
Take a trip to a park in your area and take your dog for a leisurely stroll. This is a great way to exercise your dog and let him explore in an environment outside of your home. New smells, sights and sounds will stimulate your dog and if you have company coming over, your dog will be calm because of his expended energy.

Have a Picnic
If you’re already going to the park, why not plan a picnic? If it’s nice out, take a blanket and relax in a sunny spot. You and your dog will love this time out of the house and in the sun!

Easter Basket
Your dog is like a fuzzy kid to you, so why wouldn’t he get an Easter Basket, too? Check out all of our Easter Basket gift suggestions to say “Hoppy Easter” to you pup. Great bully sticks, all natural dog treats, toys and more will have your pup hopping around the block!

Hazards
Remember, there are some hazards you want to be aware of during Easter. Chocolate, sugar substitutes, Easter grass and Easter Lilies are all toxic to dogs. Read our full Easter Pet Saftey blog to make sure your dog stays happy and safe.
