With all the treats being handed out this Halloween we can't forget fido. So gather the following ingredients and make fido a spooky and delicious meal made especially for them.

INGREDIENTS

• 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil (EVOO)
• 2 carrots, grated
• 1 cup cooked shredded rotisserie chicken
• 3 black mission figs, chopped
• 1 pinch ground cinnamon
• 2 cups chicken broth or water
• 1 cup cooked brown rice

PREPARATION

In a deep, medium skillet, heat the EVOO, 1 turn of the pan, over medium-high heat. Add the carrots and cook until slightly softened, 3-4 minutes. Add the chicken, figs and cinnamon and toss. Stir in half of the chicken broth, then the rice and warm through, 3-4 minutes. Stir in more broth, as needed, to make a slightly soupy mixture.

Serves 2 Dogs

About DFW LRRC

The Dallas Fort Worth Labrador Retriever Rescue Club, Inc. (DFWLRRC) is dedicated to alleviating the needless death and suffering of homeless or misplaced (lost and stray) purebred Labrador Retrievers in the Dallas Fort Worth area.

They provide education about responsible dog ownership, including, but not limited to, counseling on behavior and obedience training, sterilization (spaying and neutering) and veterinary care. They seek out loving homes for these Labradors and provide quality interim care and rehabilitation through volunteer foster homes and veterinary intervention.

By rescuing and rehabilitating homeless Labradors in their community, vigorously promoting responsible dog ownership through active participation in pet-related events, and through their own education program, they strive for a better life for each of our animals.

Where do the Labs come from that are in their program?

Dogs in their program come through a variety of avenues. Some dogs come from an area shelter, humane society, picked up by a concerned citizen, or surrendered by its owner. Often, they get in surrender applications from people who can no longer care for their dogs due to health issues, military relocations or moving where dogs are not allowed. Each dog is evaluated by a DFWLRRC volunteer before it can enter into our program.

How Can You Help?

Volunteer and be a lifeline for each and every lab that comes through DFWLRRC. Look into the eyes of any of the rescues and you will see their eternal gratitude for that second chance at life...the second chance volunteers gave to them. They are so thankful a volunteer listened to that inner voice that nudged them into signing up to do that home study, showing up to that meet n greet to talk with potential adopters or opening up their home to foster that Lab in need. Yes, each and every one of their volunteers makes a difference -- no matter what the contribution. Without their volunteers they would not have been able to help nearly 500* Labs since 2004.

Well it's the time of the year again. For fido with those nonstop doorbell rings we call it...Bark-o-ween. As much as we may enjoy this holiday, Halloween can be confusing and scary for our four legged friends. Here are some more safety tips and things to consider to ensure a successful Halloween with your dog:

1. Ding Dong - CANDY PLEASE! If your dog is nervous and reacts to the sound of a door bell, this can be a good time to practice and train fido if you have someone helping you. Have one person pass out the candy and you can practice obedience with your dog. If you are just starting out, you can keep your dog on a leash for this training exercise. Every time the door bell rings and your dog acts appropriately (perhaps a bark and then quickly calms down), he gets his own doggy approved treat. Start out several feet away from the door. By the end of the night, he might not even care who is ringing your door bell because he is already ready for that treat! This is an excellent desensitization exercise if done properly. If you know this simply won't work perhaps consider boarding or leaving your pup with a loved one.

2. Boo-Hiss-Woo! Scary sights and sounds. The door training may be too much for your dog and he may feel more comfortable in his own safe space. It is perfectly ok if your dog would rather be in another area happily chewing on a treat/bone instead. Please observe your dog’s comfort level here and crate, or move him if necessary.

Children who are loud and excited in costume may scare your dog. Gauge how your dog responds and act accordingly. If your dog is showing signs of stress, remove him from that situation. If your dog is already nervous around children, this would NOT be a good time to try and socialize him around kids. The last thing you need is your dog scaring your unfriendly neighbor's child. On the other hand this might be a great time to make new friends and even potential play pals for your pup.

3. Hot Dog! Costumes for Dogs. If you are dressing up your dog for Halloween, please make sure your dog can still properly see, hear and move comfortably. Other dogs may react poorly when they see dogs in costume. This isn’t out of the norm, so just be aware and observant. And please dress creatively or ironically.

4. Not a treat! Chocolate and other goodies. After the kids bring home their stash, it is very common for dogs to find their way into the candy. Encourage your kids to keep all candy away and properly stored, so your dog cannot access it. Here are some treats that your pup can have.
