Best Bully Sticks Rescue Spotlight: Janice Wolf & Rocky Ridge Refuge

Janice says it was never a choice. It was a calling.

“I have rescued animals from my earliest memory. Just born to do this. Over the years I would do what I could, where I could. I grew up as a 'military brat,” always moving around and with parents who were not very keen on animals, so I did not have pets very often. I did keep various wildlife 'patients,” like orphaned baby birds and injured bunnies, stashed in the woods in my makeshift 'MASH' units, so I could care for and then release them all healed.”

It’s hard to describe who Janice Wolf is. She’s the founder of Rocky Ridge Refuge, a rescuer, a healer, a spokesperson, an advocate and more. But since Best Bully Sticks held our $500 Animal Shelter Giveaway, we quickly realized exactly what Janice Wolf does. Simply put: she loves animals.

Janice Wolf loves animals. It determines her every action. The well being of her animals, from the fawns, ducks, sheep, dogs and at one point a very famous bull, is what makes life worth living.

“I have had serious health issues for many years and helping and caring for the animals literally gives me a reason to get up everyday and fight through daily pain and fatigue. I have never had a family of my own, so these critters are my family.”

Janice’s family is a wonderful one and they return her love.  Although, with 50-60 family members, things sometimes get a little cramped.  But, just like a true family, they make it work. Read more

Dog Care 101 Tip #158: Preventing & Treating Canine Obesity

Best Bully Sticks knows that you love spoiling your dog, but you might want to reconsider feeding Fido those table scraps during dinner. It seems that pet obesity is a growing problem in the U.S., a fact made clear by a recent article published by WebMD, which listed obesity among the top five issues facing pets. There are a number of reasons why owners may unintentionally allow their dog to plump up; dogs may not get daily exercise, they could overeat, or they could be eating food unsuitable for a healthy animal diet.

Pet obesity can cause complicated medical problems if left untreated. It’s proven to be a contributing factor to heart disease, diabetes, respiratory problems and bone and joint issues. An overweight dog is not a happy, healthy pet no matter how many treats you give him.

Unfortunately, many people remain ignorant about what their dogs can and cannot eat on a regular basis. This may simply be because dog obesity isn’t a widely covered issue and owners may not think twice about proper dietary and exercise for their four-legged friends. Let’s take some time to recognizing canine obesity and addressing basic preventative methods so you can enjoy your dog’s company for a long time.

How can you tell if your pet is overweight?
Too many owners confuse a fat dog for a healthy one. As stated before, pet obesity is serious business, so if you have any suspicion that your dog is overweight, check for these few key signs. Read more

History & Background: The Borzoi is a sight hound that was bred by crossing Arabian greyhounds and a thick-coated Russian greyhound. “Borzoi” actually means “fast” in Russian and this dog was a constant companion to Russian aristocracy for hundreds of years. This breed was used to hunt wolves, fox and hare in the Russian plains. In 1936, this dog became known as the Russian Wolfhound in America.

Height: At least 28-30 inches for males; at least 26 inches for females

Weight: 60-105 pounds

Coat: The Borzoi’s coat is long and silky. The texture of the coat can vary from straight to wavy to curly. On the head, ears and fronts of the legs, the hair is short and smooth yet the neck should have dense hair. This dog’s hair feathers on the back and front of the legs, tail and chest.  Regular brushing and bathing are required to keep up the coat.

Color: This dog can be found in any color or color combination.

Appearance: Sometimes called the “long-haired greyhound,” the Borzoi’s history as a hunter has provided this breed with very specific and distinctive physical traits.  As an extremely fast runner, the Borzoi has muscular legs and smooth body lines. This breed looks very similar to the Saluki as well.  Read more
