You don't have to be a craft guru to get crafting away, all you need are 3 laundered dish towels and a pair of scissors for this fun project.

Materials needed:

(3) clean old dish towels
(1) pair of scissors

What you do:
1. Cut an inch-wide strip from one short end each of two towels.
2. Bunch together the three towels and firmly tie one strip around an end to join them. Tightly braid the towels, then tie the other end with the second strip.

With these simple materials, some creativity and few minutes of your time you can get your dogs tail wagging with joy. Going green just got funner! Fun for Fido and fun cost savings for you!!

Do you currently have a dog or cat but dying to add an extra edition to your furry fun,  loving pack? Just keep in mind that even though you might be excited about the idea of a new family member your current dog may not initially wag with joyous approval. Here are some simple tips to make the meet and greet ( or in this case the meet and sniff) a positive, successful and stress free one for all parties involved.

1. Before bringing home a new pet make sure current dog is well-trained and under your control. If not, it will be that much harder to acclimate your dog to a new presence in the home.

2. When first bringing home a new puppy or kitten, it is best to keep the two in separate rooms so cat fights or quarrels do not occur.

3. Have a dog crate can be useful in gaining control over the situation.

4. Let new dog familiarize itself with other pets scent. One trick is to allow new pet to spend time in your dog's crate before moving it to a separate room.

5. After about a week,  start introducing your dog to the new pet, but be sure to keep it on a leash with the crate nearby in case any sign of aggression is detected.

6. Supervision is key! If both pets are in the same room it is important to parental supervision. The hope is that after a few weeks of getting to know each other that they will be able to co-exist. Until you feel absolutely confident that they will play nice and you can leave them home alone together, supervision or separating them until you arrive back home from your errands is advised.

Like humans, dogs have to deal with not so pleasant stomach issues and bouts of diarrhea. If your dog is experiencing extreme and continuous diarrhea, dehydration, or other signs of sickness, seek advice from your veterinarian immediately. But often times a simple home remedy  of white rice and boiled chicken will suffice. Adjust recipe according to your dogs weight.

Chicken & Rice Dog Recipe

Ingredients:

Frozen boneless skinless chicken breasts
½ cup white rice
2 cup of water

Instructions:

1) Bring 1 cup of water to a boil in a pot.
2) Boil 1 breast of chicken for 15-20 minutes in the water until juicy and tender.
3) Bring the other cup of water to a boil in a separate pot.
4) Pre-rinse the white rice in a strainer and then cook in the second pot according to the instructions on the package.
5) Drain the chicken out of the water when it is cooked. Shred the chicken in small bit sizes.
6) Mix the shredded chicken and rice in a bowl. Allow it to cool a bit as to not burn your dog's mouth.

Even the most sick pup loves a good meal of rice and chicken, which is often all a pup can stomach when diarrhea sets in. Slowly increase the amount of food given to your dog over the course of a day or two. Within a few hours or days, the diarrhea should stop completely and your dog can be weaned back on his regular diet if the diarrhea subsides.  Although it can be tempting to spoil a sick dog back to health it is important to avoid dog treats, chews and oily food until the diarrhea is gone.

**IMPORTANT** Make sure to keep your dog hydrated throughout the entire process. Keep his water bowl full and, if he isn't consuming any liquids, contact a vet.

So, cut back on your pets treat intake, do away with the table scrap diet and switch to low calorie pet food with less fat and more fiber.

2. Exercise is key! Regular exercise helps keep arthritis under control.  Taking your dog for a 20 minute brisk walk several times a day will work wonders.  If your  dog is unable to do a 20 minute walk, try shorter walks up and down a small incline/hill.

3. Let Dog Sleep Indoors- Cold and damp places can cause your pets joints to hurt. So, make sure to bring your dog inside at night, and give him a warm, soft place to flop away from drafty doors & windows.

4. Make Feeding Time Easier- Often times pets with arthritic stiff neck can  have a difficult time eating. For more convenience, place your pets food and water bowls up off the floor so he or she doesn't have to lower head as much during mealtime. Better yet you can purchase raised feeding bowls.

5. Lend Your Climbing Pet a Helping Paw - Arthritic pets often have a hard time with mobility making jumping up & down and climbing stairs quite a painful task. Installing a ramp will help assist your pet in getting around and help your pet maintain some independence.

Regular ear cleaning & check ups is an important part of your dog's overall health and well-being.  Proper ear cleanings help prevent the onset of painful ear infections caused by bacteria, yeast and mites. Often times, ear infections can be triggered by wax buildup, dirt, hair mats, growths or ticks that disrupt drainage or promote ear moisture. Allergies from dust, food & pollen can also trigger ear irritations so keep a watchful eye.

On a side note when you bathe your dog place cotton balls in the ears to prevent water from entering the ears & ear canal. This is an important tip that should be used on dogs with floppy ears. The ears must remain completely dry to avoid providing a damp environment for bacteria and fungus to fester & take refuge.

So, what are the common warnings signs that your dog may have an ear infection?

1. Scratch at ears incessantly
2. Head shaking or tilting
3. May rub the infected ear alongside couch or carpet
4. Ears are sensitive to touch. Dog may shy's away from being petted on or near the ears
5. Ears becomes red, irritated & swelled
6. Brown or yellowish ear discharge
7. Ears have a foul odor
8. Blood blisters on the ear flap
9. tumors or growth

If the symptoms do not subside or go away this may be a sign of something more serious. Please seek the help of a vet immediately to prevent hearing loss & other health complications.

Now that you know why it is important to clean your dog ears from the inside out now on to the question of the hour. How often should you clean a dog's ears? Well, good question! Responsible & loving pet owners should clean practice preventative dog ear cleanings & check ups at least once a week. If  you have a dog with floppy ears then twice a week since they are more susceptible to  getting ear infections. Here are some simple & easy dog ear cleaning how to's for you to follow:

1. Inspect your dogs ear prior to the cleaning them and jot down any abnormalities such as redness, irritation, odor, foreign matter or discharge needing your vets immediate attention. Don't proceed with ear cleaning go see your trusted certified vet for help.
2. Once you have inspected your dogs ears and given them a clean bill of health you can start begin the ear cleaning process. You will need the proper tools a gentle dog ear wash specifically formulated for ear cleaning, cotton ball & cotton swab.
3. Soak a cotton ball gently & thoroughly in the ear wash. Squeeze out excess ear wash.
4. Place the cotton ball in your dog's ear and slowly & gently rub up and down.
5. Allow your dog to shake off excess moisture & use cotton ball to gently rub dry. Since moisture is the breeding grounds for bacteria & infections it is important your dogs ears are completely dry.
6. Soak the tip of a cotton swab in the ear wash and run it along the nooks and crannies of your dog's ears.
7. Avoid putting the swab down your dog's ear canal; leave this type of cleaning to the veterinary medical staff.

**NEVER use alcohol to clean your dogs ears it could burn and cause more pain, distress & damage. Ear syringes should only be used by a certified veterinarian.
