The holiday season put us in such a giving frame of mind. So as we open our wallets and hearts by giving our time. Lets not forget about our neglected and abandoned furry friends during the Holiday season. Tis the season to spread love and help the less fortunate including your local animal shelter or rescue. A Rescue Dog’s Christmas Poem

`Tis the night before Christmas and all through the town,
Every shelter is full – we are lost but not found,
Our numbers are hung on our kennels so bare,
We hope every minute that someone will care,
They’ll come to adopt us and give us the call,
“Come here, Max and Sparkie – come fetch your new ball! !”

But now we sit here and think of the days…
We were treated so fondly – we had cute, baby ways,
Once we were little, then we grew and we grew -
Now we’re no longer young and we’re no longer new.
So out the back door we were thrown like the trash,
They reacted so quickly – why were they so rash?

We “jump on the children”, “don’t come when they call”,
We “bark when they leave us”, “climb over the wall”.
We should have been neutered, we should have been spayed,
Now we suffer the consequence of the errors they made.
If only they’d trained us, if only we knew…
We’d have done what they asked us and worshipped them, too.

We were left in the backyard, or worse – let to roam -
Now we’re tired and lonely and out of a home.
They dropped us off here and they kissed us good-bye…
“Maybe someone else will give you a try.”
So now here we are, all confused and alone…
In a shelter with others who long for a home.

The kind workers come through with-a meal and a pat,
With so many to care for, they can’t stay to chat,
They move to the next kennel, giving each of us cheer…
We know that they wonder how long we’ll be here.
We lie down to sleep and sweet dreams fill our heads…
Of a home filled with love and our own cosy beds. -

Then we wake to see sad eyes, brimming with tears -
Our friends filled with emptiness, worry, and fear.
If you can’t adopt us and there’s no room at the Inn -
Could you help with the bills and fill our food bin?
We count on your kindness each day of the year -
Can you give more than hope to everyone here?

Pet cancer is an unfortunate problem that can touch any and all of our lives. This month, be sure that you do your part in the fight against pet cancer. Canine Cancer Facts:

-Cancer accounts for nearly 50% of all disease-related pet deaths each year
-One in four dogs die of cancer.
-Approximately 1 in 4 dogs develops a tumor of some kind during his lifetime.
-Just like in humans, cancer can occur in any part of your dog’s body.

Signs of Cancer

The importance of annual check-ups regardless of the age of your pet is critical in the prevention of cancer. Here are the top 10 early warning signs of pet cancer listed out by the American Veterinary Medical Association.

1. Abnormal swellings that persist or continue to grow

2. Sores that do not heal

3. Weight loss

4. Loss of appetite

5. Bleeding or discharge from any body opening

6. Offensive odor

7. Difficulty eating or swallowing

8. Hesitation to exercise or loss of stamina

9. Persistent lameness or stiffness

10. Difficulty breathing, urinating or defecating

If you notice that your dog has abnormal swelling, sores that don’t heal, weight loss, poor appetite, bleeding, offensive odor, difficulty eating, fatigue, lameness, or difficulty performing normal functions like breathing or urinating, it’s incredibly important for you to see your veterinarian. Many of these symptoms can be early signs of pet cancer.

Cancer Types

The most common forms of cancer in pets are lymphomas and skin and oral tumours. Many types of cancer can be cured if caught early enough and if the lump is small enough to surgically remove. Even after a lump removed, your veterinarian may wish to send the sample to a pathologist to ensure that the margin of the growth is cancer free.

Treatment options

If your dog or cat is diagnosed with cancer, many of the same human treatment options are available for pets, such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.

Steps to Avoid Cancer in Your Pet

Keeping your pet active with a healthy weight and on a high quality diet will prevent some forms of cancer. Obesity is a major cause of cancer in pets. Having your pet spayed or neutered will drastically decrease the chance of various reproductive cancers.
