The Pomeranian - The Little Pom

PomeranianThe Pomeranian is a distinctive looking small toy sized dog often known as a Pom or Pom Pom. This breed is of the Spitz type and is named after the Pomeranian region of Central Europe. This tiny dog is descended from the larger German Spitz dog and the breed was really made popular as the pet of royalty in the 17th century when Queen Victoria owned one.

The Pomeranian is a very distinctive dog with its wedge-shaped head and short muzzle. But the most distinctive thing about this animal is its thick, double coat. It has an outer coat which is long and straight but harsh in texture whilst the undercoat is soft, thick and short in comparison. The dog’s coat can come in a variety of different colors and patterns including red, orange, white, cream, black, brown and tan.

For such a tiny animal, the Pom really is lively! As a breed the dog is proud, intelligent, loyal and eager to learn from its owner and family. The Pom makes an ideal companion and a competitive show dog. The Pomeranian has a lovely, docile temperament with an endless supply of affection for its owner. If you want a dog to cuddle and keep you company, the Pomeranian really is the dog for you!

As well as looking incredibly cute and cuddly, the breed is also surprisingly alert, active and inquisitive. It is actually one of the most independent of the Toy breed and will become naughty if not trained properly from an early age. In order to control and train this dog you need to have a firm yet gentle hand as its liveliness could get out of hand. The Pomeranian is one of the most well-liked dogs within the Toy breed as it has endless amounts of spirit and character.

One thing to watch out for when deciding on a Pomeranian is that they can be really picky eaters, but once you’re used to that it shouldn’t be too much of a problem. If you have other pets already, bringing a Pom home shouldn’t be a problem as long as they are introduced properly. You might not think it but these dogs also make really good little watch dogs and will bark when someone’s at the door if you teach them too early on enough.

Although Poms are affectionate and love their owners, they are not clingy like some other Toy breeds. They are also good at learning tricks and will take instruction really well. As Poms are really small and cute a lot of people will let them get away with bad behavior and baby them but this will only lead to behavioral problems. Don’t let your dog get away with unacceptable behavior just because it’s small as it may develop Small Dog Syndrome which is hard to solve. Due to the size of this breed, the Pomeranian is the perfect companion for an elderly person.

The Pomeranian breed is prone to several different health problems. Specific health problems include dislocated knee-caps, heart problems, eye infections, skin irritations, tooth decay and early loss. Most vets will recommend that you feed your pet of dry dog food or crunchy milk bones on a daily basis to help keep teeth and gums in good condition. When the dog gets older it is also prone to bald spots.

Pomeranians need a daily walk and although they tend to play a lot indoors they also need to get outside. Dogs that do not get enough exercise are more likely to develop behavioral issues later on in life. Give them dog toys to play with to make the exercise more fun!

The Pomeranian’s distinctive coat needs to be brushed frequently to prevent matting and to keep it looking shiny. When you get a Pom you need to be aware that they will constantly shed so if you have allergies or are particularly house proud you may want to re-think your choice!

The Loving Boston Terrier

Boston TerrierOver the past few years, the Boston terrier has grown in popularity. Thanks to its sweet nature, impeccable intelligence and good attitude, the Boston terrier has now been renamed the ‘American Gentleman’ of dogs.

Boston terriers adore people and love to be a part of the family and be involved in the action. For this reason, it is advisable to only consider having this type of dog if you can commit the time, dedication and love that this particular dog requires from its owner. If you are able to provide him with the environment and commitment that he requires, then a Boston terrier can make the ideal companion and will be utterly devoted, loving and loyal to you. However, if opting to have a Boston terrier puppy, it is vital that you use a trustworthy and experience breeder as if bred from a puppy mill, a Boston terrier may be ill-treated, causing them to form behavioral problems, or even physical conditions.

One of the main benefits of owning a Boston terrier is that they are incredibly easy to train as they are eager to please their owner and are very intelligent. However, as one would expect with any form of dog breed, it is likely that you will encounter some issues along the way as he learns different disciplines and obedience’s. For this reason, it is always advantageous to familiarize yourself with the most effective methods of training for this particular breed. The Boston terrier is also renowned for its fantastic temperament, meaning he will get on well with all members of your family- including small children and any other pets you may have, so long as he is trained to socialize with other animals. However, they can be incredibly trusting of strangers meaning that they may partial to running towards any stranger whom may show them some affection or attention. For this reason, it is imperative that you provide your Boston terrier with a secure environment to play in due to his small stature, he can be hard to keep track of! However, he is also a very homely dog and so will desire to have plenty to keep him occupied when in dogs in the form of dog toys, dog chews and bags of love and affection from his owners.

Boston terriers should ideally be fed around ½ to 1 can of high quality dog food a day, with the occasional biscuit. Alternatively, they also enjoy dry food but with ½ cup of hot or cold water mixed, in order to make a gravy-style meal. Along with a healthy diet, Boston terriers also require frequent exercise in the form of daily walks. Due to their small stature, they do not require heavy exercise but it is important to allow him as much free range of movement as possible in order for thorough and effective exercise. Although this form of dog does not shed his coat, it is beneficial to brush him every day in order to stop his coat from becoming matted and to keep him clean.

With a gently and loving disposition and a sociable attitude towards everyone, the Boston terrier is truly a pleasing dog to own which is why this breed has grown in popularity with many families across the country. By ensuring that you provide him with as much love and affection he shows to you, you are sure to have a forever loyal and attentive companion.

The Great Dane

Great DanesRecognized as one of the giant dog breeds, the Great Dane is a dog which demands respect and admiration for its exceptional beauty and stature. Great Danes are almost instantly recognizable due to their great size although they are not particularly heavy dogs, as one would expect. Their beautiful physique has earned them the nickname, ‘Apollo of Dogs’ and the fantastic personality of a Great Dane has made them an incredibly popular dog with many families due to the abundance of love, affection and friendliness they give to their family.

According to statistics, a male Great Dane will be at least 34 inches in height, with the average Dane measuring at close to three feet in height. How a Great Dane’s physique develops with primarily depend on his or her gender; for example, a male Dane can complete all phases of his development within three years, whereas a female Dane will completed development within just 12 months or even less. Great Danes will remain as puppies for around 18 months and after this period of time, owners will witness a great change in their Danes’ mental and physical maturities in the 10 months that follow.

As with all dog breeds, it is imperative that a Dane is provided with a healthy diet and regular, proper exercise. A Great Dane’s diet should be consistent, with dog food portions being measured and monitored, according to his or her current age and weight in order to promote good health. It is essential that a Great Dane maintains a healthy weight as underweight Danes can become vulnerable to sickness and disease, whereas an overweight and unhealthy Dane will have an increased risk of heart diseases and uncomfortable bloating.

Due to their large stature, Great Danes require plenty of room in with to run and play. As puppies, a Dane requires a great deal of exercise and stimulation in order to keep him fit and help eliminate boredom. Taking him for long walks, playing games such as catch and fetch and providing him with various dog toys and dog chews will all help him develop and remain occupied. These sorts of activities are also great for helping to teach your Dane obedience, good behavior and will also help to strengthen the bond between master and dog. As they are able to interact with children well, Great Danes make for an ideal family pet. Similar to children, Great Danes possess curious and trusting characteristics meaning that they are welcoming to children in the home. If you have children, it is important to teach them how to handle your Dane correctly but due to their great temperament, this type of dog will not become aggressive unless provoked.

By being provided with vast amounts of love, affection and a combination of regular exercise and a great diet, a Great Dane can live to be up to 8 years old. However, if a healthy lifestyle is followed, some Danes can even live to be up to 12 years of age. The German Shorthaired Pointer - The All-Purpose Gundog

German Shorthaired PointerThe German Shorthaired Pointer was developed in Germany during the 19th century as can be seen by the name. Initially the breed was developed as an all-purpose gundog due to its exceptional skills in game finding, pointing and retrieving. The German Shorthaired Pointer is the perfect companion for any hunter as the dog is alert, intelligent and has an amazing sense of smell that is ideal for hunting game.

The GSP takes instruction very well which is another reason why it is the perfect hunting companion and works harder than most working dogs of a similar size. It can work on both open ground and water with equal enthusiasm making it a truly versatile animal in the field. As a breed, the GSP is loyal and level-headed which makes it great as a hunter but also a brilliant pet. The dog is endearing to all members of the family and has a protective nature that is without aggression which makes it the perfect addition to any family home.

Even though the German Shorthaired Pointer makes a great pet, it is important to remember that this dog is essentially a working gundog with a lot of energy. Therefore, it needs to be exercised daily in order to keep both mind and body active and healthy. GSP’s are highly trainable due to their hunting origins and will prove very loyal pets if treated with love and care. If you do not have the time or the space to exercise your pet then the German Shorthaired Pointer is not for you. This breed will not be happy as a lap dog or a flat dweller and may develop behavioral issues later in life. The breed does love children and people in general so you should have no problems socializing your pet.

As soon as you look at a German Shorthaired Pointer you can tell that they are renowned for their power, speed and steady nature. Energetic-looking and powerful with adequate muscles, this medium sized dog has an impressive bone composition and a coat that gives the animal a thoroughbred appearance.

Although the German Shorthaired Pointer is powerful and active, they are also approachable and gentle towards humans and other animals. They are not nervous or unpredictable and make great pets for families. They love to play and the more energetic the better so make sure you have enough dog toys and time to devote to exercising your pet on a regular basis. Exercise is also very important for mental stimulation with this breed.

As these dogs are shorthaired their coat does not take too much looking after. You will have to brush them on a regular basis with a firm brush though and keep bathing to only when it is absolutely necessary. Being shorthaired these dogs don’t shed so are perfect for those with allergies. Always have the right dog supplies at hand to deal with this. If your dog takes part in working exercise it is essential to check their feet and ears afterwards to make sure that everything is ok in that area.

Due to the nature of the work they were developed for, German Shorthaired Pointers are relatively tough health animals and suffer from few health problems. However, if your dog is involved in hunting activities you need to be careful about the spread of bacteria and fungi from coming into contact with the game.

The German Shorthaired Pointer has a longer life expectancy than other dogs of this size and most live up to 14 years with no problems. This means that you can enjoy many years with this loyal and affectionate pet!

The Doberman Pinscher

Doberman PinscherThe Doberman Pinscher can be traced back to 19th century Germany, where the animal was bred as a police dog by Herr Louis Dobermann. Dobermann was a policeman and a tax collector and needed a loyal, obedient and most of all a protective dog to accompany him on his rounds. Various breeds were used to create the Doberman Pinscher of today including the German Pinscher, Rottweiler and German Shorthaired Pointer. This breed represented intelligence, bravery, loyalty, stamina and protectiveness and was the perfect type of animal to accompany Herr Louis Dobermann.

The Doberman Pinscher that we all know and love today is a mellowed animal that has lost some of its fierceness and has now become a valuable member of the family. The breed of today is capable of showing affection and great gentleness. It is also an animal that enjoys being around children and other animals in the home. Whilst most Doberman Pinschers get on well with other dogs if introduced properly, most do not like cats.

The Doberman Pinscher is a fearless creature who creates an intense attachment to their family which can make them distrustful of outsiders. This attribute makes the breed an excellent guard dog as they will protect their family and home from anything that appears threatening. Due to this protective nature, socialization of this breed is essential. If you own a Doberman Pinscher you need to make sure that you introduce it to visitors where possible, make sure that it is familiar with other pets and that you warn strangers of its existence before they enter your property if necessary.

As Doberman Pinschers can be very strong-willed and dominant it is important that they have an owner that can earn their respect and has the time to spend on firm and consistent dog training from an early age. They also feed off love and attention so it is important that whilst you are firm you are also loving and attentive.

The Doberman Pinscher can be quite a jealous breed of dog therefore it is important to have enough time and dedication to show your dog all the love and attention it deserves. Your Doberman will only properly feel content if it is at the center of your life. That being said, this dog is not for everyone as it does require a lot of time, effort and training. If you have the time and dedication then the Doberman Pinscher will reward you in its own unique way with endless amounts of love and loyalty.

A common misconception of the Doberman Pinscher is that it can be kept solely for the purpose of being a yard dog or guard dog. Yes, the dog will protect you from threats if it has formed a close attachment with you but it will not just simply be a guard dog without any treatment. You cannot expect to get a Doberman, put it in a yard and have it protect you just because of its breed. You need to earn loyalty and devotion from your pet before it will defend and you can only do this through training and spending time with it. To leave a Doberman in a yard and expect it to protect you is simply cruel.

Your Doberman Pinscher is a high energy dog that needs daily off the lead exercise. Regular exercise can help with behavioral issues as well keeping the dog happy and healthy. If you do not spend enough time with your Doberman or never exercise it, you run the risk of it turning aggressive through boredom. Try using dog treats for exercise motivation.

Before going ahead with the decision to take on a Doberman you need to be aware that this breed has a huge appetite for dog food and it will cost you a lot of money to feed it. As the dog can grow up to 40kg can eat up to 600gms of meat, 300gms of vegetables and 300gms of rice everyday!

The Doberman Pinscher is not a dog for everyone, but if you are made of the right stuff your pet will reward your dedication with unconditional love and loyalty every day.
