The Doberman Pinscher

Doberman PinscherThe Doberman Pinscher can be traced back to 19th century Germany, where the animal was bred as a police dog by Herr Louis Dobermann. Dobermann was a policeman and a tax collector and needed a loyal, obedient and most of all a protective dog to accompany him on his rounds. Various breeds were used to create the Doberman Pinscher of today including the German Pinscher, Rottweiler and German Shorthaired Pointer. This breed represented intelligence, bravery, loyalty, stamina and protectiveness and was the perfect type of animal to accompany Herr Louis Dobermann.

The Doberman Pinscher that we all know and love today is a mellowed animal that has lost some of its fierceness and has now become a valuable member of the family. The breed of today is capable of showing affection and great gentleness. It is also an animal that enjoys being around children and other animals in the home. Whilst most Doberman Pinschers get on well with other dogs if introduced properly, most do not like cats.

The Doberman Pinscher is a fearless creature who creates an intense attachment to their family which can make them distrustful of outsiders. This attribute makes the breed an excellent guard dog as they will protect their family and home from anything that appears threatening. Due to this protective nature, socialization of this breed is essential. If you own a Doberman Pinscher you need to make sure that you introduce it to visitors where possible, make sure that it is familiar with other pets and that you warn strangers of its existence before they enter your property if necessary.

As Doberman Pinschers can be very strong-willed and dominant it is important that they have an owner that can earn their respect and has the time to spend on firm and consistent dog training from an early age. They also feed off love and attention so it is important that whilst you are firm you are also loving and attentive.

The Doberman Pinscher can be quite a jealous breed of dog therefore it is important to have enough time and dedication to show your dog all the love and attention it deserves. Your Doberman will only properly feel content if it is at the center of your life. That being said, this dog is not for everyone as it does require a lot of time, effort and training. If you have the time and dedication then the Doberman Pinscher will reward you in its own unique way with endless amounts of love and loyalty.

A common misconception of the Doberman Pinscher is that it can be kept solely for the purpose of being a yard dog or guard dog. Yes, the dog will protect you from threats if it has formed a close attachment with you but it will not just simply be a guard dog without any treatment. You cannot expect to get a Doberman, put it in a yard and have it protect you just because of its breed. You need to earn loyalty and devotion from your pet before it will defend and you can only do this through training and spending time with it. To leave a Doberman in a yard and expect it to protect you is simply cruel.

Your Doberman Pinscher is a high energy dog that needs daily off the lead exercise. Regular exercise can help with behavioral issues as well keeping the dog happy and healthy. If you do not spend enough time with your Doberman or never exercise it, you run the risk of it turning aggressive through boredom. Try using dog treats for exercise motivation.

Before going ahead with the decision to take on a Doberman you need to be aware that this breed has a huge appetite for dog food and it will cost you a lot of money to feed it. As the dog can grow up to 40kg can eat up to 600gms of meat, 300gms of vegetables and 300gms of rice everyday!

The Doberman Pinscher is not a dog for everyone, but if you are made of the right stuff your pet will reward your dedication with unconditional love and loyalty every day.

The Compact French Bulldog

French BulldogThe French bulldog is a rather muscular and compact breed of dog and although the name may suggest otherwise, the French bulldog originates from England. With a cute and pug-like appearance that boasts a solid bone structure and a flat muzzle, the French bulldog was originally bred as the Artisans of England did not like the large size of the original Bulldog breed. After the breed was originated, it became increasingly popular within France, who then bred the smaller bulldog with French terriers, which led to their new name, the French bulldog.

The French bulldog’s heritage is easy to identify based on its many physical attributes. It possesses a smooth coat and un-cropped tail which is straight by nature. The head is square shaped and large, with wide set eyes that are dark in color and provide the French bulldog with it’s somewhat ‘cute’ appearance. This type of bulldog’s ears, are often referred to as ‘bat ears’ as they are rounded on the upper section and are broad at the base. With these facial characteristics combined, the French bulldog usually displays a facial expression that depicts intelligence, alertness and an increasingly level of curiosity. The typical height of a French bulldog is measured at 12 inches from the shoulder and they can weight anything from 19-28 pounds. In regards to their coat, the French bulldog’s coat can come in a range of colors and patterns. In most cases, the coat will be a fawn color which will range from pale to a darker brown shade and often, he will sport markings or patterns on his coat.

The French bulldog’s heritage stems from a group of dogs who were known as mastiffs, who were widely used as guard or watch dogs. However, do not allow this to make you think that the French bulldog is stern mannered. French bulldogs are renowned for possessing comical traits within their personality and are incredibly playful, affectionate and alert dogs. Due to their playful and comical nature, they enjoy nothing more than playing for hours upon and end and can often keep themselves entertained without the intervention of any others. However, like many other breeds of dogs, the French bulldog requires attention and affection and have a tendency to form a strong bond with one particular member of a family, although will show love to all members of the family. They also interact well with children, if they have been raised together, which makes them an ideal family pet also.

If you are contemplating adding a French bulldog to your family, it is imperative that you look towards a reputable breeder to ensure the health of your puppy. It is always advantageous to investigate how the puppies have been brought up and the environment in which they have been bred, paying close attention to how they move around and interact with other puppies and humans. As always, make sure they are given a healthy diet of dog food and exercise. French bulldogs show much of their personality from a young age, so this can ensure that you take home the right puppy for your family. French bulldog puppies can be rather boisterous, sociable or quiet – or be a mixture of all these traits, but with the right training and love, you can ensure that your French bulldog is the perfect pet and companion.

Good natured, gentle and incredibly loving, the compact French bulldog makes the ideal companion for any owner- whether you are single or have children. So long as you give him the love he wants, you are guaranteed to receive plenty of love and affection in return.

The Chihuahua - The Tiny Yet Robust Breed

ChihuahuaThe Chihuahua is a tiny little dog and has a very distinctive small apple-shaped head with a short muzzle. They have large adorable eyes and small erect ears that make this animal look different to any other breed. The Chihuahua is the ultimate companion dog. They are courageous, extremely lively, and adventurous and thrive on affection. These little animals are really agile and fearless and without proper training can be quite strong minded and even naughty. However, with the right training they can be the perfect little pet.

Once you get a Chihuahua you really do have a friend for as long as the animal lives. As a breed, Chihuahua’s are incredibly loyal and become very attached to their owners. This means that you can literally take this little dog anywhere with you and they will love it. Chihuahua’s are a big favorite amongst celebrities and many of them have bags designed specifically to carry round their little pets. Chihuahua’s really are affectionate; some even like to lick their owner’s face so if you don’t like really attentive dogs then this breed isn’t for you!

Chihuahua’s really need to be supervised well as some can be quite difficult to train but with the right training program and dedication it can be achieved. Chihuahua’s are not stupid creatures; in fact they are really intelligent and can learn quickly if treated with a firm but gentle hand. They can be quite hard to house train but as long as you establish the ground rules early on your pet will respond well. Just because they are a small dog you shouldn’t let them get away with things that you would not allow a large dog to do such as jumping up on people. This is allowing dominant behavior and if you allow this you may be allowing your dog to develop other negative behaviors such as jealousy and aggression with other dogs and sometimes even humans.

In general, Chihuahua’s are not recommended for children. This is not because they respond badly to them but because people tend to treat Chihuahua’s differently than they would a larger dog and allow bad behaviors because they are “cute.” As owners, a lot of people tend to baby Chihuahua’s because of their size and make the mistake of thinking that they don’t need to be exercised. Although smaller dogs do require less exercise than larger breeds, they still need exercise. A walk is a lot more than just a walk to smaller breeds, as well as providing much needed exercise is also provides great mental stimulation.

If you do not give your pet the exercise it needs on a regular basis, you run the risk of it turning snappy, yappy, overly-protective and untrustworthy with children and adults that they do not know. That being said, with the right training this great little dog can be a great companion for any family. The right dog toys can help in making the exercise fun for both parties.

These little dogs do tend to have their fair share of health problems. As a breed Chihuahua’s are prone to rheumatism, colds and gum problems. They can also suffer from corneal dryness and secondary glaucoma; do to their distinctive protruding eyes. They can also gain weight very easily which can cause problems for their small limbs. Chihuahua’s also have a tendency to wheeze and snore due to their small, short muzzles. Health care and dog grooming supplies can be useful when owning a Chihuahua.

Chihuahua’s are ideally suited for apartment life and although they are small they still need their space and cannot be kept in a very small area. Remember that even though it is very tempting to carry these cute little animals around everywhere, they do need a daily walk.

As they have a smooth, short-haired coat they only need to be gently brushed occasionally or just wiped over with a damp cloth. Baths can be kept to twice a month and be careful not to get water in the ears. The ears need to be checked regularly and the nails need to be trimmed.

The Wise and Elegant Poodle

Poodle
The incredibly elegant poodle is often referred to as the most intelligent and wisest of the canine race. However, along with this heightened level of intelligence, he also requires a great detail of attention and affection in order to keep him accustomed to his lifestyle. For example, poodles are renowned for being particular about where they go to the toilet and commonly desire to be as clean as possible. For this reason, the owner of a poodle may find that they are required to spend more time grooming him than they would if they owned a different breed of dog, for example, a working dog.

Although poodles require more attention, they have the positive attribute of generally being less trouble than other, more boisterous breeds, although they are incredibly playful themselves. Poodles have an elegance and dignity about them and can often possess a sense of calm which one does not usually find with some other breeds of dog. However, during the training process when your poodle is a puppy, it is advisable that he socializes with other dogs. This will not only help to make him a more sociable dog, but it can also help to eliminate any aggressive tendencies as he becomes and adult.

As with all breeds, poodles require a great amount of care, not just in regards to their appearance, but also their general health and nutrition. Poodles require high grade dog food that has meat as a primary ingredient. Poodle puppies, similar to other puppies, will generally want to be fed up to four times a day, but as he ages, you will find he eats just twice a day but will consume larger portions. As poodles are relatively lean dogs however, feeding him several smaller meals a day can help eliminate any issues relating to bloating. In all cases however, refrain from overfeeding your dog with dog food or foods. Your poodle will also require adequate exercise. In order for any dog to remain healthy, happy and obedient, he will require daily exercise, sometimes more than once a day. After exercise, always provide your poodle with plenty of water to keep him hydrated and ensure that he gets the rest he needs in between periods of exercise. Ensure to spoil him with dog treats when he learns new tricks and obedience’s and always follow a healthy diet with dental treats to encourage a healthy mouth and eliminate doggy breath.

One of the most recognizable aspects of a poodle’s appearance is his coat. Poodles possess a very dense coat which will require clipping every six to eight weeks in order to stop it over growing and affecting his hearing or visibility. Although poodles do not generally shed much hair, they still require frequent brushing to stop their coat from becoming tangled or matted. This can be completed by a professional dog groomer but due to the excessive amount of grooming a poodle can require, it is sometimes more beneficial to invest in appropriate brushes and combs to do this at home yourself.

Owning a poodle with provide you with a friendly, intelligent and playful companion. Due to the level of elegance a poodle exudes, they are the ideal choice of breed if you are maybe unsure or hesitant to own a more playful or boisterous dog. However, no matter what, you can guarantee that your poodle will be utterly loyal and loving should you do the same in return.
