The Utterly Adorable Dachshund

DachshundThe utterly adorable Dachshund is an incredibly popular dog breed with dog lovers everywhere. In most cases, when one thinks of a Dachshund, they will instantly be provided with the image of a small dog that sports a long body, shiny coat and floppy ears. However, many are not aware that the Dachshund breed is diverse, including a range of dogs of various sizes and coats.

In the beginnings, the Dachshund was bred in order to effectively hunt badgers. In order to fit the requirements for this task, the Dachshund had to be built low whilst being incredibly agile and muscular in order to efficiently pursue a badger. Due to its long body, the Dachshund was originally ridiculed slightly due to its ‘sausage’ like body, but its impressive characteristics soon stopped these remarks. Today, the Dachshund is still maintains its hunting instincts so during walks if let off his leash, will enjoy nothing more than following a scent in order to catch prey unless trained correctly.

The Dachshund can be found in two sizes – either standard or miniature. Although both types possess more or less the same appearance, the Miniature should weigh no more than 11 pounds and was predominately bred in order to hunt rabbits. In terms of coat, the Dachshund can be found to possess either a short haired/smooth, long haired or wire haired coat. The short haired breed is the most commonly found breed, possessing a short and shiny coat which is more commonly associated to the idea of a Dachshund. Longer haired Dachshunds will have a sleeker, softer coat that will be prominent on their ears, tail and legs. As the name suggests, wire haired Dachshunds will have a denser, shorter and wiry outer coat and will often sport a beard and bushy eyebrows.

Along with the types of coat, a Dachshund can also sport a variety of different colored coats. The most common colors are a red/rusty red shade or a combination of black and tan. In regards to black/tan Dachshunds, they will sport all black fur with tan patches on the head, chest and paws. I addition to a different color of coat, a Dachshund’s coat may also sport some form of pattern. These patterns include a dapple pattern which consists of a dark base color with lighter areas, a double dapper pattern which consists or varying white patches across the body; and the brindle pattern which is identified by dark stripes which go across the body.

Aside from their looks, there are an abundance of reasons why the Dachshund makes for a great companion. They are loving dogs who will dote completely on their master and will provide buckets of affection. They are also incredibly curious and will desire to be involved in everything their owner may be doing. They are also very intelligent and playful which makes them quick learners and an ideal breed of dog for those with families. Try using dog toys to exercise the Dachshund's mind. However, often a Dachshund may be quite overly independent and so can be hard to train in the early beginnings as he strives to investigate his surroundings. Nevertheless, due to their size they can adapt well to smaller surroundings.

The Shih Tzu: Cute and Adorable

Shih TzuThe Shih Tzu breed is almost instantly recognizable due to small and cute stature. Renowned for being an incredibly loyal companion, the Shih Tzu stems from a long royal heritage. By nature, a Shih Tzu is commonly fearless and bold, possessing mountains of energy and affection for their owner. Although often loved due to their adorable features, they are also a well loved companion for both individuals and as part of a family.

As is common with many small dog breeds, the Shih Tzu is very confident and is not afraid of larger or louder dogs, loving nothing more than to bark at passers by or other canines. He is incredibly well natured and strives to please his master although can often sport a somewhat stubborn streak at times.

The Shih Tzu is a member of the Toy and Herding dog group which is apparent based on it’s small and almost ‘teddy bear’ like appearance. Due to their heritage, a Shih Tzu is a small dog, weighing between 9 and 16 pounds, standing at just 11 inches at the shoulders. However, this being said, they are incredibly lively dogs. In an attempt to make their presence known, a Shih Tzu loves to bark, but will predominately bark to alert its owner of any passers by outside the home or unknown people entering the home, making him a great watchdog. However, with family members or loved ones, he will be incredibly sociable and friendly and is good with other pets, if brought up together. The same came be said in regards to children. Although Shih Tzu’s are friendly dogs, they do not react well to taunting or mild abuse, making them unsuitable for families with young children. Children of an older age who can treat a Shih Tzu with the politeness he likes will find they will make a great bond with their Shih Tzu. Due to their stubbornness, it can be hard to train your Shih Tzu at first but by adopting a gentle training tactic, you will find they excel at learning and will thrive on the praise you give him.

In terms of care, a Shih Tzu requires and desires to be groomed regularly. Due to his long coat, a Shih Tzu can become prone to matting, so daily brushing is often a must. However, on the plus side, a Shih Tzu does not molt as much as other breeds, meaning that maintenance of the home is not as strenuous. Nevertheless, due to this, your Shih Tzu will require coat trimmings every few months. Shih Tzu’s are known for being snobby at times, meaning they like to spend time in doors. This being said however, as with all dogs, it is important to give him regular, daily exercise in order to keep him healthy and happy. You should maintain to walk him at least once a day for at least 15 minutes. Should you abide by regular exercise and a healthy diet of dog food and the occasional dog treat, your Shih Tzu could live to be 15 years old or even more.

For a first time owner, a Shih Tzu is the perfect choice. Cute, adorable, loving and curious, this small companion is ideal for those who wish for love and affection.

The Mischievous and Lovable Yorkshire Terrier

Yorkshire TerrierYorkshire Terriers may be small in size but they are big on personality. In fact most Yorkshire Terriers seem oblivious to their small size and are just as energetic and fun-loving as a much larger breed of dog. They absolutely love attention and affection but they also have a more stubborn and bold side to their personality. For a small dog, Yorkshire Terriers are incredibly inquisitive and are always on the look out for a new adventure and perhaps even some mischief along the way!

Most people who own a Yorkshire Terrier will find that they are a much-loved, devoted companion and even quite useful as a little watchdog. The history of these little dogs only goes back 100 years when Yorkies were bred in England for the purpose of catching rats in mines. They were also used as successful hunting dogs and due to their size were often sent to burrow underground after badgers and foxes.

Nowadays, the recognizable Yorkshire Terrier that we all know and love is slightly smaller than the original breed and is considered by some more of a fashion accessory than a hunting animal. The Yorkshire Terrier of today is a softer, more placid animal that loves to be pampered by its doting owner, yet still enjoys regular activity and will also be a terrier at heart.

The Yorkshire Terrier is an incredibly popular breed and most people are able to identify this type of dog on first glance. As the dog is so small in size and light, it is considered as belonging to the Toy breed group and not the more obvious Terrier class. However, it is not just the size of the Yorkshire Terrier that places him here; the animal also possesses a lot of the characteristics associated with the Toy category such as alertness, intelligence, a passion for activity and an inquisitive nature.

The Yorkshire Terrier is an incredibly sociable breed which makes it an ideal companion. They aren’t shy one bit and can be quite bold and fearless at times. They love to play with dog toys, and will stay entertained for a long time. This breed can also be very affectionate yet protective of their family and won’t hesitate to bark should they think danger is approaching. These characteristics make Yorkshire Terriers the ideal candidate for a watch dog. If you are considering getting a Yorkshire Terrier you need to be aware that whilst it is good that they are effective watch dogs, the barking can get annoying. Yorkshire Terriers will bark a lot so if this is something that you do not like, perhaps you need to reconsider your choice.

When it comes to children and Yorkshire Terriers, they do get on well but the relationship will work better if dog and child grew up together. By nature Yorkshire Terriers are quite tolerant of children, it is important to monitor play and ensure that the child knows how to play with the dog in a way that will not cause him to become aggressive. The child needs to understand how to play properly with the dog and not abuse or tease the dog even if they do this unintentionally. Yorkshire Terriers can snap at a child if they behave wrongly towards them.

This breed tends not to get on well with animals unless they grew up together so be careful when introducing them. You will need to socialize the animals well in order for them to get used to each together. In general Yorkshire Terriers do not get on well with cats or any sort of rodent. It is part of the terrier’s instinct to hunt animals like this and it is not easy to get rid of this mind set.

With regards to training, most Yorkshire Terriers will learn pretty quickly as they are quite intelligent creatures. Even though the terrier is only small they still need a fair bit of exercise to keep happy. One 15 minute walk a day should suffice. However, if you are unable to do this everyday you will find that your pet will find ways to keep himself active indoors so make sure he’s got plenty of dog chews and dog toys to keep him going through the day if you do have to leave him alone.

As a rule, Yorkshire Terriers do not shed but they do need regular grooming and clipping. Their hair needs to be brushed regularly otherwise it will get matted.

As a breed, Yorkshire Terriers are great companions and will provide you with lots of love and affection should you choose them as your new pet!

Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed: Congrats Duncan and Bella Pembroke Welsh Corgi

We always love getting emails from our customers & readers asking us to feature their dog or favorite breed for our Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed blog series every Thursday. As always we are honored to oblige. Thanks Karen for submitting your good looking pack of Pembroke Welsh Corgi to be featured in our series. Say "Hi" to Duncan and Bella!

Words From Their Loving Dog Owner Karen:

The first picture is Duncan, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. He will be soon be 10 years young. He was around 10 weeks old when he was surrendered at a Humane Society in MN for "herding" their children. It was love at first sight. He is allergic to almost everything, but luckily BBS carries a wide variety of treats he can actually eat! He is still patiently waiting for the time that his favorite ostrich ears make another appearance. His favorite pastime is chasing anything bigger than a rabbit. Bella is the second picture. She will be 1 year old on June 2. Her favorite thing to do is run up and down the many streams on the property. She is the exact opposite of Duncan, in that she loves to chase anything smaller than a rabbit..... chipmunks being her favorite.

Sincerely,

Karen

Handsome Duncan

Beautiful Bella

Height: 10 to 12 inches tall

Weight: Males 26 to 30 lbs , Female 24 to 28 lbs

Coat: Pembroke Welsh Corgi's should have a "fairy saddle" marking on the side of their shoulders caused by changes in the thickness, length and direction of hair growth. The phrase "fairy saddle" arises from the legend that Pembroke Welsh Corgis were harnessed and used as steeds by fairies. The white markings can be on the feet, chest, nose, stripe on the head, and as white partly or fully around the neck. Pembroke Welsh corgwn have an undercoat of fine soft fur and an overcoat of coarse hair, which makes their coat water resistant. Their coat should be medium length with a little extra on the chest plate.

Color: There are five allowed colors for Pembroke Welsh Corgis:

*Red with or without white markings which may appear on the feet and legs, muzzle, between the eyes and over the head as a small blaze, and around the neck as a full or partial collar. Red is the most commonly seen color as it is the genetically most dominant of the colors.

*Sable with white markings, which is like a red but with a light peppering of black.

*Fawn with white markings as described above, which is a lighter red (the red can be from a fawn to a deep red)

*Red-headed tricolor, which is a black dog with a red head, red spots above the eyes, on the sides of the muzzle on the legs and in the ears and around the anal area they also have white markings as described above and the white markings can often obscure some of the red markings of the muzzle and legs. A dog would be considered a mismark if they were black and white with no tan present.

*Black-headed tricolor, (the most recessive color genetically) which is a black and red dogs with red markings (in the same places you would see red on a black doberman) and white markings as described under Red above. A dog would be considered a mismark if they were black and white with no tan present.

Appearance: Corgis are one of the chondrodystrophic dwarf breeds in the canine family, being proportional to larger breeds but with shorter legs. Despite short legs, Pembrokes have a strong, sturdy appearance and an athletic body that helps them herd livestock including poultry, sheep, horses, and cattle. Their bodies are long, tails are a naturally short bob or docked, and their ears stand erect. They may be short in stature, but their sturdy bodies and boldness give them the power needed to control livestock or do just about any task asked of them by their owners.

Temperament: Pembroke Welsh Corgis are very affectionate, love to be involved in the family, and tend to follow wherever their owners go. The dogs are easy to train and are ranked as the 11th smartest dog in "The World's Smartest Breeds." Besides herding, they also function as watchdogs due to their alertness and tendency to only bark as needed. Most Pembrokes will seek the attention of everyone they meet and behave well around children and other pets. Due to their herding instinct, they love to chase anything that moves, so it is best to keep them inside fenced areas. The herding instinct will also cause some younger Pembrokes to nip at their owner's ankles to get attention, but this behavior can be stopped through training and maturity. Quick and quick-witted, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi has an active mind and body. They need daily physical and mental exercise to be at their best in the house. Pembroke Welsh Corgi's are devoted and willing to please, fun-loving, amiable and companionable.  They are very good with children and can be reserved with strangers. Many bark a lot.

Health: Pembrokes Welsh Corgi have an average life expectancy of 12 to 15 years, similar to most dogs. Like people, every animal can be susceptible to certain physical problems as they get older. Pembroke owners must not indulge their dogs by feeding them too much which can be a hard task to accomplish. Other health problems may include degenerative myelopathy, hip dysplasia, and Von Willebrand's disease if their parents suffered from the same problems.

The Minute and Sweet Miniature Schnauzer

Miniature SchnauzerThe charming and incredibly friendly Miniature Schnauzer is considered by many to be one of the most lovable dogs to be around. Due to their pleasant nature and lovability, this likeable dog makes for a great pet within any form of household. Incredibly sweet and intelligent, your Miniature Schnauzer will remain utterly loyal and dependable to his master, making for a fantastic companion.

The Miniature Schnauzer is almost instantly recognizable in appearance due to its small stature and almost ‘teddy bear’ look. It is often believed that this breed came as a result of a cross breed between the standard Schnauzer and the Affenpinscher. There is some belief that the Miniature Schnauzer may also possess some of the aesthetic features similar to that of the poodle. As ‘schnauze’ is German for muzzle, there is also the belief that this breed is of German decadency.

There is a reason why this miniature dog is so well loved which is apparent from a small glance of its face. Sporting a bushy beard, mustache and prominent eyebrows, the incredibly cute Miniature Schnauzer is not often mistaken for any other miniature breed of dog. Should your minute friend be incredibly well groomed, your lovable companion may even boast an accentuated beard and mustache to highlight his features. A Miniature Schnauzer will boast a long and silky coat which may sport a slight curl to it, especially when the cost is longer than usual. In regards to color, most miniatures sport ‘salt and pepper’ colored coats, but Miniature Schnauzers can also possess all white, all black or even a black coat that is accentuated with a lighter undercoat.

This lovable breed is a favored choice within many households as a direct result of its cute appearance and friendly temperament. Schnauzers are incredibly happy and perky breeds which make for a fantastic playmate for children. Incredibly obedient, you will thrive on helping him learn new tricks and disciplines, whilst his high level of energy will make him the perfect pet for families with smaller children. The Miniature Schnauzer possesses characteristics that are similar to that of a child, meaning he will be a great companion for your children. Alert, happy, a lover of dog toys and always willing to play a game, your Schnauzer is guaranteed to make a fantastic bond with all family members.

In regards to temperament towards other dogs, the Miniature Schnauzer can often be quite aggressive when faced with dogs of other breeds – in particular, larger dogs. The Schnauzer is very brave and almost fearless, but his desire to be a larger dog can often provide a huge challenge in regards to his behavior with other dogs. In order to eliminate potential fights with other breeds, you, as the master, will need to fully establish your position in order to stop any aggressive tendencies. By introducing your Miniature Schnauzer to other dogs as a puppy, this can help stop these negative characteristics from developing and help him be more sociable and welcoming to other dogs. Being a smaller dog, a Miniature Schnauzer will be a generally healthy dog, so long as he is exercised regularly and is provided with a healthy and balanced diet of suitable dog food and dog dental treats. At a healthy state, a Miniature Schnauzer will be around 14 inches tall and will weight between 10 to 15 pounds. If cared for correctly and should your Schnauzer not contract any illnesses, he can potentially live to be 15 years old.

Whether you have children or are of a considerable age, the Miniature Schnauzer will slot perfectly into your household. Easy to train and extremely lovable, your Schnauzer will act as a great guard dog, as well as an excellent companion. Do not let his small stature deceive you – this is one small yet mighty dog!
