The Labrador Retriever: The Ideal Family Companion

Labrador RetrieverThe Labrador retriever is commonly perceived to be the most loyal and tolerant family dogs, making them an ideal choice of pet for families with small children. However, thanks to their working dog background, Labrador’s are full of energy and vitality and are incredibly athletic, often enjoying nothing more than spending hours upon hours running through fields. For this reason, they are best suited to families who can accommodate with adequate space and the time required in which to provide him with the exercise he needs.

In almost all cases, Labrador retrievers are incredibly happy and friendly dogs but often, they can become bored very easily due to their high level of intelligence and ability to learn tricks and disciplines quickly. Loyal to their master, Labrador’s will always alert their owner to strangers, but do not act as guard dogs as such. Instead, they will attempt to ‘warn’ strangers of their existence but when required, will always do their best to protect their master. However, no matter what, your Lab will always provide you with unconditional love and affection.

In regards to appearance, the Labrador is a typical working dog – large and powerful looking. They possess a somewhat blocked head and thick neck that sports dropped ears, and a sleek, short and glossy coat, along with an extremely strong tail. Exceptionally good eaters, a typical Labrador will weigh around 60-80 pounds and will stand at around 22.5-24.5 inches. Their love of exercise and running helps them to develop incredibly strong and muscular legs but regular exercise is a must in order to help them maintain their level of fitness and also, to help them remain obedient. A Labrador’s coat is very dense and will repel water, helping to protect the dog from becoming cold as he roams around. On average, a Labrador’s cost will shed quite excessively, with a smoother and shorter coat in the winter months. If your Labrador is provided with a healthy, balanced meal, he will also sport a glossy and healthy looking coat.

Due to their excellent temperament and level of friendliness, Labrador’s are ideal for families. However, as they are extremely and mischievous as pups, they can be hard to train at first and their personality demands a lot of attention, affection and most importantly - exercise. Similar to other dog breeds, a Labrador puppy will need training in order to eliminate bad behavior such as digging, jumping and barking. Although these are common traits with dogs at times, proper training will help these becoming a daily issue. Training labs requires a great deal of patience and energy due to the level of exercise they require and you will find during walks that they are very sociable with other dogs, especially other Labradors, but whereas some dogs are happy to be independent, Labradors need constant attention.

The main issue many owners may come across with Labradors in their early stages is how destructive they can be! Most puppies will chew objects and dig excessively, meaning they require a number of dog chews and dog toys in order to help keep their attention and help with teething. As Labradors do not fully mature until around 3 years old, it is important that you try and maintain discipline with him even once he has mastered the basic obedience’s. Due to their hearty appetite, most Labrador puppies will want to be fed up to 4 times a day in the first few months, calling for suitable dog food to provide him with the vitamins and minerals he needs. As he grows, you will soon find he eats more but less frequent, but will always be curious as to what’s on your plate if not provided with the required training regarding meal times.

If you want a dog that is full of love, warmth and vitality, a Labrador retriever is the ideal dog for you. Perfect for both active families and families with small children, you can guarantee that your lab will remain forever loyal to his master and is sure to keep you on your toes!

The Intelligent And Versatile German Shepherd

German ShepherdThe German Shepherd dog is easily one of the most recognizable breeds in the world. Its unique temperament and incredible intelligence mean that this breed now has an international fan club. In one sense this animal has an affable even easygoing nature, however when provoked the animal can quickly become defensive and protective of their owner. This is a breed that is all about instinct and this is why proper training is essential when you own a German Shepherd.

The German Shepherd, also known as the Alsatian is an animal that is highly trainable, loyal with an incredible desire to please. These characteristics mean that you can literally train a German Shepherd to do just about anything you need it to! In order for this breed to be completely happy they need to have some sort of task or purpose which is why they perform so well in official roles such as part of a search and rescue team, police work, as a guide for the blind, as a guard dog and as a sheep dog.

This breed learns so readily that it also excels in many other dog activities such as schutzhund tracking, obedience, agility, flyball and ring sport. The German Shepherd is incredibly versatile and its skills can be used to sniff out drugs and intruders, alert rescue teams to victims tracked beneath rubble and even detect a gas leak in a pipe buried 15 feet underground. As well as being an extremely useful and effective working dog, the German Shepherd is also a great pet.

As working dogs, German Shepherds are direct, fearless, eager to learn, alert and obedient. These traits also translate to a fantastic pet as they will be tremendously loyal and protective towards their family or owner. They are a confident animal but do not appear hostile unless challenged or threatened. German Shepherds love to be close to their families and are often affectionate but are wary of strangers. If you do choose to have a German Shepherd as a pet you need to be sure that you will be able to spend a substantial amount of time with it as they do not like being isolated for long periods of time.

The German Shepherd is perfect if you want a good watch dog or guard dog and will only bark when necessary. It is essential to extensively socialize a German Shepherd dog as they are instinctively protective and may become aggressive with outsiders if not used to it.

As long as a German Shepherd is trained in obedience from an early age there should be no problem with children and this dog. In fact the German Shepherd is a very popular family companion.

German Shepherds need a fair amount of exercise, the more strenuous the better for this breed. They are large dogs and will need a good run around on a regular basis. They also thrive on a challenge so love exercise combined with training to keep their mind and body active. Try some dog toys that are aimed at activating the mind in combination with regular exercise.

You need to be aware that German Shepherd dogs shed hair constantly and it only gets worse in cold seasons. They need daily brushing in order to ease the amount of hair shed but they only need to be bathed once or twice a year.

German Shepherds make a great working dog and a brilliant companion. If you put the time in training this breed, they will reward you with loyalty, obedience and affection on a daily basis.

The Distinctive Face Of The Bulldog

BulldogMost people know what an English Bulldog looks like due to its incredibly distinctive face. In fact, this breed probably has the most distinctive mug of all the breeds out there! The dog itself is a mixture of a solid, muscular frame and an adorably wrinkled face- this really is a breed like no other! Most people have a common misconception of the Bulldog as an aggressive animal but in actual fact the breed is notoriously affectionate and soft, especially where humans and other pets are concerned.

These comical-looking dogs are highly affectionate towards their owners making them a great companion and addition to the family home. Bulldogs are also great if you simply don’t have the time or ability to walk your dog twice and day and spend time grooming the animal. Bulldogs require very little exercise or grooming and are perfect for families, single people, the elderly and even the disabled.

Bulldogs are quite small animals; they are also stout and sturdy. Their muscular, squarely set legs give them their trademark “waddle” which gives them added character and sets them apart from other breeds. Many people often mistake the Bulldog’s “grumpy” facial expression to mean that they are an aggressive but this couldn’t be further than the truth. They are well-known as the kindest and gentlest of all the breeds of dog and thrive on human attention and love.

Although Bulldogs don’t require a lot of exercise or grooming, they do take up your time in other ways. They don’t like being left on their own for long periods of time and anyone thinking of owning a Bulldog should ensure that they have the time to spend with their pet so they don’t become lonely. Try various dog toys when playing with them. They tend to get on well with other pets and therefore are great family pets, but they can become aggressive when faced with strange dogs so be aware of this when walking your dog.

If you have a Bulldog from a puppy age you need to be aware that at this young age they do tend to have a lot of energy and need to be constantly entertained. They love dog toys at this age so make sure you buy some to keep the animal entertained. However, this breed does mellow as they get older and become a lot slower. Bulldogs are great for guarding homes but they do not tend to attack people unless severely provoked. You also need to be aware that this breed drools a lot and can snore very loudly!

The Bulldog is the perfect example of a dog earning its name. The name was first used in the 1700’s when the dog was put in a bullring with bulls and was expected to fight. Spectators would then place bets on who would win the fight, all in the name of entertainment. Animals that won against the bull repeatedly would then be bred to create even tougher breeds of animal. By the 1800’s animal fighting was thankfully outlawed in England but this meant that the breed was somewhat forgotten about. However, the breed made a return to the scene in 1860 when it was entered into dog shows. This new breed of dog had had its fighting instinct eliminated via selective breeding.

Bulldogs are full of character and charm and are a great pet for almost anyone! If you want an animal that will be a loyal companion for you then the Bulldog is perfect.

The Beagle - The Small Hound With A Big Personality!

BeagleThe Beagle really is the perfect family pet. As a breed they are known for their happy, affectionate nature and their love of company, whether human, canine or even feline! They dislike being on their own making the Beagle an addition to any busy family dynamic. As well as being extremely lovable they are also very intelligent and always looking to please their owner. They particularly suit active families as they have high energy levels and love exercise.

As soon as you mention the Beagle most people will associate these creatures with hunting. The history and origin of the breed originates in England where they were mainly bred for hunting rabbits and quails. Traditionally they would hunt in packs or pairs but they are also extremely good at hunting alone. Beagles are especially renowned for their excellent sense of smell and it is this characteristic that makes them such good tracking and narcotics dogs. Nowadays, Beagles are mainly kept as companion animals but their strong hunting heritage means that they are extremely persistence and are able to work through problems themselves.

Beagles are a notoriously ‘happy go lucky’ creature which makes them exceptional companions for the average family. Although they are only small they are little bundles of energy. They have lots of stamina and extra energy that they are always looking to use up so you need to make sure you have the time to provide them with regular exercise. Invest in different dog toys and dog treats to keep exercise interesting and make sure that good behavior is rewarded.

Beagles are also incredibly low maintenance. After even the muddiest of walks, all the dog needs is a rub down with a towel and they are clean again! This is due to the animal’s dense, waterproof coats, clean legs and small compact feet; another reason why Beagles are such a family-friendly pet to have! They also never have to be clipped so you don’t need to worry about this expense.

Beagles truly are a great sporting breed with lots of character. They are easy to look after and as long as they get enough love and exercise they are happy! When it comes to food Beagles really enjoy eating and will literally eat anything! However, you do need to be careful not to over-feed them as they will eat whatever you put in front of them. An adult dog will only need one serving of dog food and maybe one dog treat or biscuit a day.

Beagles require very little socialization and are happy interacting with most other animals and humans. They do need companionship and may turn destructive if left alone for hours on end. A perfect home for a Beagle is one that can give them plenty of play time, exercise and regular walks. However, many Beagle owners will warn to keep the dog fenced in a yard at home or on a leash when on a walk as they do have a tendency to follow scents and run off to explore. If you don’t want to spend hours searching for your dog it is best to keep it on a lead!

As well as making great companions they are brilliant watchdogs. They will let you know if someone is at the door by barking, however they are extremely friendly so don’t make as good guard dogs!

If you want a little dog to enjoy walks with, to be affectionate and provide great companionship for you and your family, then the Beagle is the breed for you!
