The Beagle - The Small Hound With A Big Personality!

BeagleThe Beagle really is the perfect family pet. As a breed they are known for their happy, affectionate nature and their love of company, whether human, canine or even feline! They dislike being on their own making the Beagle an addition to any busy family dynamic. As well as being extremely lovable they are also very intelligent and always looking to please their owner. They particularly suit active families as they have high energy levels and love exercise.

As soon as you mention the Beagle most people will associate these creatures with hunting. The history and origin of the breed originates in England where they were mainly bred for hunting rabbits and quails. Traditionally they would hunt in packs or pairs but they are also extremely good at hunting alone. Beagles are especially renowned for their excellent sense of smell and it is this characteristic that makes them such good tracking and narcotics dogs. Nowadays, Beagles are mainly kept as companion animals but their strong hunting heritage means that they are extremely persistence and are able to work through problems themselves.

Beagles are a notoriously ‘happy go lucky’ creature which makes them exceptional companions for the average family. Although they are only small they are little bundles of energy. They have lots of stamina and extra energy that they are always looking to use up so you need to make sure you have the time to provide them with regular exercise. Invest in different dog toys and dog treats to keep exercise interesting and make sure that good behavior is rewarded.

Beagles are also incredibly low maintenance. After even the muddiest of walks, all the dog needs is a rub down with a towel and they are clean again! This is due to the animal’s dense, waterproof coats, clean legs and small compact feet; another reason why Beagles are such a family-friendly pet to have! They also never have to be clipped so you don’t need to worry about this expense.

Beagles truly are a great sporting breed with lots of character. They are easy to look after and as long as they get enough love and exercise they are happy! When it comes to food Beagles really enjoy eating and will literally eat anything! However, you do need to be careful not to over-feed them as they will eat whatever you put in front of them. An adult dog will only need one serving of dog food and maybe one dog treat or biscuit a day.

Beagles require very little socialization and are happy interacting with most other animals and humans. They do need companionship and may turn destructive if left alone for hours on end. A perfect home for a Beagle is one that can give them plenty of play time, exercise and regular walks. However, many Beagle owners will warn to keep the dog fenced in a yard at home or on a leash when on a walk as they do have a tendency to follow scents and run off to explore. If you don’t want to spend hours searching for your dog it is best to keep it on a lead!

As well as making great companions they are brilliant watchdogs. They will let you know if someone is at the door by barking, however they are extremely friendly so don’t make as good guard dogs!

If you want a little dog to enjoy walks with, to be affectionate and provide great companionship for you and your family, then the Beagle is the breed for you!

Boxer Dogs - Your Strong And Energetic Companion

BoxerBoxer dogs are an ideal addition to any family or individual. They are incredibly energetic and sociable creatures and are perfect for those who lead an active lifestyle. As a breed Boxers are inquisitive and devoted to their owners so if you are looking for a loyal companion, these dogs are perfect match. Their loyal characteristics make them excellent watch dogs and protectors.

Even though these dogs are extremely lovable and loyal, they also require a fair amount of training. They are notoriously stubborn especially when it comes to training so be prepared to very patient. It is important to understand that boxers require a lot of exercise and without it may become bored and destructive. Therefore, it is essential to make sure that a Boxer dog is right for you and your family and that you will be able to look after it properly before making a decision. This is only fair for both you and the animal.

The Boxer breed has been around since the 19th century and is thought to have been developed in Germany. Boxers are thought to have descended from a warrior breed of old fighting dogs known as Assyrian Molossian. This dog was notoriously strong and fearless and was often used in battles.

The breed was very popular in Germany in the early stages of development and was known as the Bullenbeisser. The dog was mainly used to hunt and pin down a bull, bear or boar due to its strength and powerful build. The Boxer dog of today is still celebrated for its powerful build and the name “Boxer” was given to the dog as it was known to paw at the ground when playing.

As well as being extremely strong and energetic, Boxers are also a humorous and intelligent breed who just loves to play. They like to be involved in whatever their owner is doing so be prepared to have a constant companion when you choose a boxer. Don’t let the breed’s fighting background put you off, even though Boxers are known for their strong build in actual fact they act just like energetic puppies! This means you need to be prepared to bring home a pet that will jump up on people, will play with other dogs and can chew through just about anything if bored! In order to counteract the destruction, it is important to provide your Boxer dog with full obedience training from an early age if possible, and stick with it. Also provide your dog with plenty of dog chews and dog toys to keep your pet entertained and away from chewing the sofa.

Boxers are really sociable so if you have other pets in the home already it shouldn’t be a problem. They are also great with children, but be warned they can get quite boisterous in play and may knock a small child over so always supervise play. These dogs can be quite distrusting of strangers and it is this that makes them excellent guard dogs, they are also very protective of their owners.

It is important to keep your boxer entertained as much as possible as they can be quite destructive if left alone. Make sure you are taking them for plenty of walks on a regular basis and if possible, spend a lot of time with them as they are prone to separation anxiety. If you don’t have lots of spare time to spend with your Boxer then may need to reconsider your choice. Boxer dogs tend not to make great first time pets as they do require a lot of attention and training. That being said, if you do have the time to devote to your pet you will be rewarded with plenty of affection and companionship. Remember that while Boxers are a handful, the rewards they will provide you with are priceless!

Beauty As Well As Brains: The Golden Retriever

Golden RetrieverFor many years, the Golden retriever has been highly regarded as the ideal pet for all types of families. Whether you have children or possess some form of disability, the incredibly smart and obedient Golden retriever could be the ideal addition to your family. He will be incredibly loyal to you will strive to please you with an abundance of love and affection.

Similar to other sporting breeds, the Golden retriever was born in Britain during the 1800s, following the breeding of its ancestors including the now extinct Tweed Water Spaniel, amongst others. Developed by Lord Tweedmouth, the original litter of Tweedmouth’s breeds included a yellow retriever puppy of whose breed was unknown. Originally, the Golden retriever was used as a hunting dog, but as its beauty became recognized, it was soon moved to the show ring. Although the Golden retriever can sport coats of various colors, from a pale orange to deep gold, the deeper coat shades were more favored. However, in modern today, Golden retrievers are commonly found with medium to light shade coats.

Due to their past working background, Golden retrievers are incredibly strong, alert and active dogs. However, their gentle manners and friendliness makes them an ideal family pet. Should a Golden possess shy or neurotic tendencies, this is usually the result of poor breeding or a lack of socializing with humans or other dogs. When bred and looked after correctly, a healthy male Golden retriever will stand at around 23-24 inches from the shoulder and will weigh roughly 65-75 pounds. Females are slighter smaller and therefore will weigh less but will sport a longer body rather than a similar height. In all instances, a healthy Golden will possess a strong and well fringed tail. Should he be well looked after, this will almost be always wagging to show his happiness and/or excitement.

Gender can be easily identifiable by investigating the head. A male Golden will have a wider skill, muzzle and neck compared to females. Every Golden retriever, regardless of gender, will possess deep and gentle looking eyes that help emphasize their beauty but often, their intelligence can be seen through their eyes also. Similar to Labrador retrievers, a Golden’s ears will fall forward along the side of their head but do not hang as low as hound ears so to not hinder their vision. His coat will be dense and water repellent which is a characteristic which makes Golden retrievers good working dogs. His outer coat will be firm and resilient and depending on length, will either be straight or wavy. Compared to Labrador retrievers, Golden’s have softer and silkier coats, especially if they follow a healthy and balanced diet.

In order to maintain a good level of health and fitness, a Golden requires daily exercise in order to help keep his muscles strong and lean. Regular exercise can also be a great way in which to keep him obedient and happy. To coincide with regular exercise, a Golden will also require a diet of premium dog food, but although they are exceptionally good eaters, it is important that owners do not overfeed. Regular dog dental treats can help his mouth to stay clean and healthy. His coat will also require frequent grooming due to frequent molting. In regards to training, early socialization with other dogs can help to make a Golden retriever sociable with other dogs at an older age and will help to eliminate any aggressiveness. Due to their high level of friendliness and enthusiasm, it is important to train your retriever to not jump on others – especially if you have young children, as they can be incredibly unaware of their strength as they grow.

Most owners of a Golden retriever will find that their dog provides them with unconditional love and will be a pleasure to be around. By ensuring that you spoil him with dog toys and dog chews to keep him entertained and give him the exercise and diet he needs, you can expect to enjoy your loving Golden retriever for many years to come and gain a fantastic companion in the process.

Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed: Cheers for Bug the Cardigan Welsh Corgi

We always love getting emails from our customers & readers asking us to feature their dog or favorite breed for our Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed blog series every Thursday. As always we are honored to oblige. Thanks Julie for submitting Bug, your Cardigan Welsh Corgi to be featured in our series.

Hey furiends, say "Hi' to Bug, a 5 year old Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Bug loves herding and working in general. He really loves the Himalyan Dog Chews! Herd on over to his blog!

Hey Good Lookin'!

Height: 10.5-12.5 inches

Weight: Male 30-38 lbs; Female 25-34 lbs

Coat: Cardigan Welsh Corgi coat is medium length but dense as it is double. Outer hairs slightly harsh in texture; never wiry, curly or silky. Lies relatively smooth and is weather resistant. The insulating undercoat is short, soft and thick

Color: Cardigan Welsh Corgis can be any shade of red, sable, or brindle; they can also be black with or without tan brindle or blue merle with or without tan or brindle points. They usually have white on the neck, chest, legs, muzzle, underneath, tip of the tail, and as a blaze on the head, known as the "Irish pattern." Other markings include ticking on the legs and muzzle, smutty muzzles, monk's hoods, and others. A few other unofficial colors can occur, such as red merle.

Appearance: The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is a long, low dog (low set with moderately heavy bone and deep chest) with upright ears and a bottle brush tail. The old American Kennel Club standard called it an "Alsatian on short legs". The Cardigan's tail is long (unlike the Pembroke Welsh corgi, whose tail may be long, short, naturally bobbed or docked)

Bug the Jumpin' Cardigan Welsh Corgi

Temperament: The Cardigan Welsh Corgi equals big personality in a little dog. These are intelligent, active, alert little guys who will want to be the center of your world. They love to be with their families, and will shower you with loyalty, devotion and affection. They need daily exercise and love to take long walks with you. They are intelligent and eager to please and do great with obedience training. They excel in obedience, agility, flyball, Frisbee, herding, and tracking competitions. They get along very well with respectful children, but parents need to be aware that Corgis might try to herd kids. (They also might try to herd other animals and your houseguests.) Most Corgis like to be with other cats and dogs. They are adaptable dogs and can live anywhere as long as they get walked, but they do like to bark, so close neighbors might object. While personalities differ within the breed, in general, the Corgi is even-tempered, hardy, friendly, loyal and loving. And they are always full of fun.

Health: The Life expectancy for Cardigan Welsh Corgi is 12-15 years. Cardigan Welsh Corgis are prone to glaucoma and PRA and should not be overfed. The most common cause of death for the breed was cancer, old age and neurological disorders
