Spotlight on a Rescue or Charity: We Are Proud To Honor Dogs for the Deaf

We are dedicated to spreading awareness about pet related causes such as pet adoption. So we are excited to announce our new Tuesday blog series “Spotlight on a Rescue or Charity", to pay tribute and honor animal rescue, shelters and charities. These are our unsung heroes across America dedicated to enriching, saving and nurturing the lives of animals in need.  We hope you will champion our cause by barking the word about the importance of pet adoption and donating your time and finances to your local animal shelter or rescue. Be a voice, email us if you know of a deserving animal rescue or charity that should be spotlighted and recognized. With that said, we are proud to spotlight “Dogs for the Deaf

About Dogs for the Deaf: Dogs for the Deaf (DFD) was founded in 1977 by the late Roy G. Kabat, a long-time Hollywood and circus animal trainer who raised animals for motion pictures and television shows including "Dr. Doolittle" and "Born Free." His daughter, Robin Dickson, is his successor and the CEO/President of Dogs for the Deaf.

Mission: Rescuing and professionally training dogs to assist people and enhance their lives, maintaining a lifelong commitment to all dogs we rescue and all teams we serve.

Rescuing homeless dogs and professionally training them to enhance lives is what Dogs for the Deaf is all about. In over 33 years, Dogs for the Deaf has rescued and placed over 3,000 dogs in homes as Hearing Dogs, Miracle Mutts (Special Dogs for Special People),  Harmony's Hounds (Dogs with Special Needs), and Career Change Dogs.

Programs:

HEARING DOGS: Hearing Dogs are chosen from animal shelters. Many shelters must euthanize dogs if no homes are found for them. By using shelter dogs, we are able to help alleviate some of the unwanted dog population by rescuing these dogs. Once trained, they are placed in loving homes where they provide valuable and even life saving benefits. The dogs are usually mixed breeds up to 36 months of age. The trainers look for dogs that are friendly, energetic, healthy, and confident. Each dog is individually evaluated by a Dogs for the Deaf trainer. Those passing the evaluation are brought back to our facility for a thorough medical exam, needed vaccinations, and treatment to bring them to optimum health. All dogs are micro chipped, spayed or neutered, and then begin the intensive 4 to 6 months of training.

AUTISM ASSISTANT DOGS are trained to enhance the safety of children with autism

PROGRAM ASSISTANCE DOGS go to work with and assist professionals such as physicians, teachers, counselors, and court room advocates, in the treatment of and work with their clients.

MIRACLE MUTTS (Special Dogs for Special People): Special furry friends who provide companionship, motivation, and emotional support to people who need a helping paw. These dogs help with depression and loneliness; they provide a reason to get up in the morning and motivation to exercise; and the generally make life more worth living.  Meet New Miracle Mutt Bento and new friend, Miracle Mutt Arlo. Their recipients are friends, and now, so are their Miracle Mutts - who truly are special dogs for special people!
HARMONY'S HOUNDS (Dogs with Special Needs): Dogs who have a special physical or emotional need and are looking for someone willing to provide a stable, loving home and any special care they might need with things like on-going medical concerns, old age, anxiety issues, allergies, and seizures. In the right, special environment, these dogs can thrive and provide lots of love.

CAREER CHANGE DOGS: Wonderful dogs that make loving pets and companions. Check out their adoptables!

Spotlight on a Rescue or Charity: We Are Proud To Honor HALO Animal Rescue

We are dedicated to spreading awareness about pet related causes such as pet adoption. So we are excited to announce our new Tuesday blog series “Spotlight on a Rescue or Charity“, to pay tribute and honor animal rescue & shelters, unsung heroes across America dedicated to enriching, saving and nurturing the lives of animals in need.  We hope you will champion our cause by barking the word about the importance of pet adoption and donating your time and finances to your local animal shelter or rescue. Be a voice, email us if you know of a deserving animal rescue or charity that should be spotlighted and recognized. With that said, we are proud to spotlight “Halo Animal Rescue"

About Halo Animal Rescue

HALO (Helping Animals Live On) is a private, 501(c)(3), non-profit organization founded in 1994 by two women, Michel Herstam and Heather Allen, out of their homes in Phoenix, AZ.

HALO provides temporary shelter to abandoned cats and dogs until they can be adopted into a permanent home.

HALO is a limited admission or "no-kill" facility that does not accept animals from the public. HALO, believing that their strategy serves the animals in greatest need, selects animals from the euthanasia lists at "open admission" shelters in Maricopa County, primarily Maricopa County Animal Care and Control.

In 2008, HALO transitioned from a completely foster-based organization to an agency that utilizes both foster homes and a physical adoption center. HALO's adoption center is a 3,000-square-foot building on a 1.75 acre parcel of land located at Camelback and 35th Avenue in Phoenix, AZ. This location was most-recently a cat adoption facility managed by Maricopa County Animal Care and Control, though it was originally constructed to be a Department of Motor Vehicle office.

Since HALO's inception in 1994, over 20,000 dogs and cats have found a new home, with our adoption numbers growing every year! In 2009 alone, we adopted out 2,584 dogs and cats in to new homes, giving them a second chance at happiness!

Mission

HALO is an acronym that stands for Helping Animals Live On. It is a succinct, four-word definition of what they are here for.  It is the reason each and every employee and volunteer puts two feet on the ground.  It is a passion that goes beyond just loving dogs and cats.  It is a driving force in their lives; to make this community, this world, a safe place for homeless pets. Helping Animals Live On through increased adoption, sterilization and pet care education.

How Can You Support HALO?

HALO depends entirely on private funding from compassionate people who want to help homeless animals. Your contribution big or small is crucial to their life-saving mission. There are so many ways to help!

Spotlight on a Rescue or Charity: We Are Proud To Honor Rolling Dog Ranch Sanctuary

With that said, we are proud to spotlight "Rolling Dog Ranch Animal Sanctuary"

About Rolling Dog Ranch Animal Sanctuary

The Rolling Dog Ranch Animal Sanctuary rescues and shelters disabled animals. Every animal who arrives at the sanctuary gets another chance to have a safe and loving home. Their residents include blind dogs, blind horses, deaf dogs, blind cats, and animals with other neurological and orthopedic disabilities.

Although these animals may have disabilities, they do not consider themselves handicapped. They just want to get on with life and enjoy themselves. Thanks to the support of the sanctuary's friends, that's what they get to do here.

Steve Smith and Alayne Marker-Founders of the Rolling Dog Ranch Animal Sanctuary say a few words:

We founded the Rolling Dog Ranch Animal Sanctuary in December 2000, when we left our corporate jobs in Seattle and moved to a 160-acre ranch in the Blackfoot River Valley of western Montana. Our dream was to create a sanctuary focused on caring for animals with disabilities. These are the animals who are the least likely to be adopted and among the most likely to be euthanized in traditional shelters. The sanctuary is home to about fifty animals on average, nearly two-thirds of them blind.

From the outset, we had named the ranch the "Rolling Dog" because our dogs loved to roll around on their backs in the sagebrush- and grass-covered meadows on the property.

After ten wonderful years in Montana, we moved the sanctuary during the spring and summer of 2010 to a new and equally beautiful 120-acre property in the White Mountains of northern New Hampshire.  You can read about why we relocated on our blog here.

One thing is clear:  The dogs — and the horses! — love to roll around on their backs even more in the lush and green New Hampshire grass!

The sanctuary's disabled residents are remarkable animals. They are happy, energetic and loving. Many of our visitors can't believe the animals they see romping with each other and running around are blind or cope with some other kind of handicap. There isn't a single animal here who feels sorry for itself. Each and every one of them loves being alive.

That's really the ultimate inspiration for us. Despite their disabilities, they want nothing more than a chance to enjoy life. And that's what they get to do here. Watch this AARP slideshow about the ranch.

How Can You Support the Rolling Dog Ranch Animal Sanctuary?

The sanctuary depends entirely on private funding from compassionate people who want to support a safe haven like this. Your contribution big or small is crucial to their life-saving mission.

Spotlight on a Rescue or Charity: We Honor The Washington Animal Rescue League

We are dedicated to spreading awareness about pet related causes such as pet adoption. So we are excited to announce our new Tuesday blog series “Spotlight on a Rescue or Charity", to pay tribute and honor animal rescue & shelters, unsung heroes across America dedicated to enriching, saving and nurturing the lives of animals in need.  We hope you will champion our cause by barking the word about the importance of pet adoption and donating your time and finances to your local animal shelter or rescue. Be a voice, email us if you know of a deserving animal rescue or charity that should be spotlighted and recognized. With that said, we are proud to spotlight “ The Washington Animal Rescue League”

About The Washington Animal Rescue League (WARL)

Founded in 1914, the League is the oldest animal shelter in the District of Columbia.

The Washington Animal Rescue League, founded in 1914, opened the first animal shelter in Washington, D.C. for stray and abused dogs, cats, and horses.  Through the shelter, the League also provided free veterinary care for those who could not afford it and held an annual Christmas food drive for companion animals and working horses.

Having outgrown its O Street, NW, quarters, the League moved to 71 Oglethorpe Street, NW, in 1977.  The Medical Center was built in 1996 to serve the shelter animals and continue the League’s tradition of aiding the companion animals of the low-income community.

In 2006, the League completed a revolutionary transformation, making it one of the world’s most progressive animal rehabilitation centers. The shelter was re-designed entirely from the animals’ point of view to promote the physical, mental, and social healing of animals recovering from a previous life of trauma.

Mission

Its mission continues to evolve as conditions change and animals face new and different challenges, but the core of that mission remains unchanged: The mission of the Washington Animal Rescue League is to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome animals who have nowhere else to go. They are committed to strengthening and preserving the human-animal bond by supporting animals in their homes through affordable veterinary care, community outreach, and education.

The Washington Animal Rescue League is known not only for its long history of compassionate care for animals, but for its innovative shelter, which is designed to promote the physical, emotional, and social healing of animals recovering from past traumas, and for the progressive programs that benefit animals and the community.

How can you help WARL?

The Washington Animal Rescue League is supported entirely through contributions of money, time, and in-kind gifts from the public. It does not receive any support from local, state, or federal governments.

They find homes for over 1,400 dogs and cats every single year (900 dogs and 500 cats in 2009); about 7,000 dogs and cats come through our doors for medical care and/or adoption annually! They  have a full staff of adoptions coordinators to help you find your perfect match, and our animals are worked with and handled by our staff of behavior and training specialists daily. We take every step possible to make sure our animals find loving, forever homes.

WARL Pets in need of adoption. You can easily search for a companion up for adoption via their database.  However, animals arrive and leave on a daily basis, so please visit the shelter to see all of their  furry friends. Come see them- your new best friend awaits you!
