Founded in 1899, The Anti-Cruelty Society has been on the forefront of animal welfare. The Anti-Cruelty Society has been committed to caring for animals and the community. Since 1999, the beginning of their second century of caring, they have found loving permanent homes for more than 40,000 pets, spayed or neutered more than 61,000 animals and taught messages of compassion and caring for the animals to more than 225,000 school-aged children and community groups.

Philosophy

At The Anti-Cruelty Society we believe:

• In an open door policy – we will not turn away any animal in need
• There are no time limits placed on any animal in our care
• That no healthy or rehabilitatable pet should be euthanized
• The key to pet overpopulation is sterilization
• That education can prevent cruelty, abuse and neglect and promote responsible pet ownership
• If an animal’s quality of life is severely compromised, euthanasia is the humane alternative

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) was the first humane society to be established in North America and is, today, one of the largest in the world. About Guide Dogs of America

Guide Dogs of America is dedicated to its mission to provide guide dogs and instruction in their use, free of charge, to blind and visually impaired men and women from the United States and Canada so that they may continue to pursue their goals with increased mobility and independence. Guide Dogs of America provide the blind and visually impaired with independence, companionship, confidence and freedom.

History

Guide Dogs of America was founded over 60 years ago by Joseph Jones, Sr. (a retired member of the IAMAW) with the help of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW or IAM)

When Mr. Jones became blind, he considered all his options and decided his mobility needs would best be met by using a guide dog. He applied to all the existing schools, but he was declined because of his “advanced age”. He was only 57 years old.

Mr. Jones was a determined man and “no” was not a word in his vocabulary. He turned to the IAM for help, soliciting assistance from the IAM’s Executive Council. The IAM Executive council conducted extensive research, determined there was a growing need for guide dog services, and therefore endorsed the founding of International Guiding Eyes (IGE) In 1948. The IAMAW continues to be a generous supporter and staunch advocate of the school’s mission today.

IGE was one of the first guide dog schools to be founded by a blind individual. It was also one of the first schools to adopt a policy of no upper age discrimination.

In 1992, International Guiding Eyes changed their “doing-business-as” name to Guide Dogs of America in an effort to communicate more clearly the services provided by the organization. Now the organization operates under the name Guide Dogs of America as an International Guiding Eyes Program. Today Guide Dogs of America seeks new and better ways of helping the blind community.

How Can You Help Guide Dogs of America?

Your contribution of time and/or money helps them provide guide dogs free of charge to blind individuals. With the gift of a guide dog, these men and women are better able to pursue their goals, fulfill their dreams, and participate in their communities. Guide dogs not only provide the gift of increased independence, confidence, and mobility, but they also act as a trusted companion providing new opportunities for social interaction. With nearly 80% of all the funds they receive going directly to program services, you know your money is well spent. They do not receive any funding from local, state or federal government.

The cost to provide one guide dog and match it with its new blind partner is $42,000.00. Your gifts help them fulfill their mission and reflect your own personal desire to help others live more independently with the loving partnership of a guide dog.

About Pets for the Elderly Foundation

The most serious disease for older persons is not cancer or heart disease - it's loneliness. Pets offer affection, unconditional love, fight loneliness, and can help ease the loss of a loved one. Their mission is to give both a lonely, elderly person and an innocent, unwanted animal the gift of health and happiness through companionship.

The Pets for the Elderly Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, helps pay the fees to participating animal shelters throughout the United States for senior citizens (age 60 and over) who adopt a companion dog or cat from a participating shelter — including pre-adoption veterinary exams and spay/neuter, if part of the adoption fee.

Pets For the Elderly began in Cleveland in 1992, and expanded nationally in 2001 with a goal of saving as many companion animals as possible from euthanasia. They have a small staff, and all administrative costs are paid by the organization's founder. Currently there are 55 participating shelters in 29 states. Many more shelters would like to participate, shelters are added as funding becomes available. In 2010, the Pets for the Elderly Foundation assisted with the adoption of 5,770 companion animals. Their goal is to save the lives of 7,500 companion pets annually, while enhancing the lives of an equal number of senior citizens.
