Traditional Easter lunch or dinner usually consists of ham or lamb. While ham is tasty, BestBullySticks knows that lamb has a lot of health benefits for you and your dog! So if your celebrating Easter with a great meal, don’t leave Fido out! Kirby the Dorkie and his mom, Debby, shared this great lamb dog meal with us for our Easter Edition of the Weekly Drool Recipe!

Lamb, which is great for the coat and skin, is a fatty, calorie dense meat often recommended for lean dogs to gain more weight so you may want to feed this meal sparingly if your dog is borderline chunky like Kirby.

The aroma wafting from the oven kept Kirby in or near the kitchen the entire time just hoping for a bite!

Ingredients

• 1 lb ground lamb
• 1 cup cooked butternut squash*
• 1/2 cup ricotta cheese
• 1 cup crushed tomatoes
• 1 red bell pepper, seeded and diced
• 1 tsp garlic powder
• 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
• 1 tsp sweet mint, finely chopped
• 3 tbsp parsley, finely chopped
• 2 tbsp light olive oil

Preparation Instructions for Butternut Squash

1. Prepare squash by cutting in half lengthwise, removing seeds, and fibers. Place cut side up in ungreased baking dish. You can season sparingly with a little sea salt and real butter.

2. Pour water in dish until 1/4 inch deep. Cover with foil and bake at 375 degrees for 40 minutes or until tender. Read more

When & Why did you start?
We have worked in rescue in one way or another for a very long time. We officially created our own Non-Profit Mastiff Sanctuary in Jan 2011 when we were searching for a fawn Mastiff to adopt. I had subscribed to many rescues and shelter feeds and made many great contacts. But we were flooded daily by neglected and abused Mastiffs and realized there was no centrally located rescue in our area for these Gentle Giants and as most people in our area were looking for small dogs, the Giants waiting in shelters were very hard to place and there was no where for them to go. As we continued to get notifications, we soon began coving our entire Tri-State of Indiana, Kentucky and Illinois and now network, rescue & place Mastiffs from Indiana and all surrounding states.

What's different about your rescue?
Our goals remain the same as any other rescue out there. Its all about saving innocent lives and finding wonderful loving homes for these big kids. People tell me that what makes us different is our personal bond and attachment to each one. We love them and mend their spirit and we stay involved for the rest of their lives. We have an open door policy that encourages new families to reach out for questions and assistance and we have been known to babysit when the family has to be out of town. We keep our numbers small enough so that we can give personalized attention to each unique Mastiff and we do not kennel here, so each one truly feels at home. It is always the Mastiff that sets the pace. They tell us when they are ready to adopt a forever family and we do not rush that. We are also very conscious of their sensitivity to change so we personally transport each of our babies and stay in that area to ensure their transition to the new home. Our last adoption took us to Louisiana which under normal circumstances would be too far, however when a Mastiff says that’s his or her perfect home, we listen. New smells, sights and sounds will stimulate your dog and if you have company coming over, your dog will be calm because of his expended energy. 

Have a Picnic
If you’re already going to the park, why not plan a picnic? If it’s nice out, take a blanket and relax in a sunny spot. You and your dog will love this time out of the house and in the sun!

History & Background: The Neapolitan Mastiff has ancient origins by way of its ancestor, the molosser-type dog, which was known to live around 3000 B.C. and originated out of Asia. Alexander the Great helped in developing the mastiff type and eventually the dog made its way to Italy during Roman Conquest. Molosser-type dogs were used as war dogs as well as in circus combats where they would fight lions, tigers and men. Mastiff is derived from the Latin word “masssivus” meaning “massive.” The Italians also call this dog the Mastino Napoletano. Over the centuries, this dog was bred to be a guard dog for Italian homesteads and earned the description “big dog of the little man.” Some even say the dog was bred to look alarming enough that their appearance alone would deter intruders.

During WWII the number of Neapolitan Mastiffs diminished greatly but by 1948 a group of dedicated Italians had built up the breed and qualified the Neo’s characteristics into a breed standard. In 2004, the AKC recognized the Neapolitan Mastiff.
