Best Bully Sticks Breed Spotlight finishes off our new AKC breeds this week with the Finnish Lapphund. This dog has a very interesting ancestry and unique features, which makes it clear why it is one of the newest breeds recognized by the AKC. Read to find out more!

History & Background: The Finnish Lapphund is historically known as the helper dog of the Sami tribe, a semi-nomadic tribe in what used to be Lapland (now the northern region of Finland, Sweden and part of Russia).  After the Sami people settled down, they kept reindeer herds which the Lapphund helped herd and maintain. With the invention of the snowmobile, the popularity of this dog lessened. However, in Finland and Scandinavia, they are still extremely popular pets.

Height: 18-21 inches (male), 16-19  inches (female)

Weight: 33-53 pounds (depending on size)

Coat: The Finnish Lapphund has a very thick double coat.  The outer layer is straight, long and water-repellent. The Lapphund's under coat is soft, dense and fluffy. Males have a very thick mane of fur around the neck. This very thick and abundant coat makes this dog resistant to extreme cold.  Because of this, the Lapphund is only one of two dogs legally allowed to be kenneled outdoors during winter in Finland.

Color: This breed has many different color variations, but there is usually one predominant color. Black, white, brown red, sable and wolf-sable are often seen.  One of the most common combinations is black and tan (mostly black with tan legs and face.) Facial markings are often seen on Lapphunds, one of the most unusual being "spectacles."  These are a light rings that appear around this dog's eyes and gives the impression of wearing spectacles. Antlerz were one of the hottest new products of the year 2008, but now Best Bully Sticks brings you the second biggest of five sizes of this product; Jumbo Antlerz, Best Bully Sticks does also supply the other four sizes of Antlerz. They are made from real deer antlers and dogs just love to chew on them, a chew as nature intended rather than from a meat processing facility or slaughter house.

It is natural for wild deers to shed their antlers once a year before growing another set, making them a renewable source. Shockingly, dogs love to chew on these antlers. They are re-sized to between 4-6” in length before being cleaned and packaged. The circumference of Jumbo Antlerz is around 3-4” in size.

Jumbo Antlerz are a long lasting dog chew, usually between 2 weeks and 3 months depending on the level of aggression your dog uses when chewing on this product. They have been known to last a great deal longer than other dog chews that could be made from, plastic, bone or compacted starch. Another advantage Jumbo Antlerz have over other dog chews is that they do not splinter or shred, even when being chewed by the most aggressive of dogs. This is because they are solid throughout, which makes them safer for your dog as they are grinding them down slowly. The fact that these deer antlers are 100% natural also means that there are no plastics, no petrochemicals and no artificial colours or flavourings which could be harmful or bad for your pet’s health.

Jumbo Antlerz are rich in natural minerals that can benefit dogs health. They contain high concentrations of calcium, which supports healthy teeth and bones and reduce your dog’s chances of developing an illness called rickets. Rickets causes soft bones that can bend under the dog’s weight, a distressing experience for any dog. Deer antlers also contain iron, a supplement which is useful in the formation of red blood cells as well as being necessary for certain enzymes in the body to function. Finally, Jumbo Antlerz contain zinc which enhances the quality of the coat and skin, meaning your dog will look more fabulous on the outside.

Jumbo Antlerz are recommended for larger dogs, usually over 50lbs. It is also important to consider how aggressive your dog chews as to whether this size of antlers is suitable for them. The more aggressive chewers would need the bigger antlers, to avoid being chewed down too quickly.

Although Jumbo Antlerz are not the only deer antlers on the market as a chew treat for dogs, they do guarantee to be cleaned and sterilized, unlike many other producers. This may cause bacterial issues for your pet, therefore purchasing Antlerz is to avoid risking your four legged friend any unwanted infections. Another problem consumers could find with these other “fresh” antlers is that they will not last as long as the Antlerz products.

Supervising Your Dog

We like to remind all dog owners especially those unfamiliar with bully sticks and how their dog(s) will react to them, to make sure to supervise your dog when giving any treat or chew including bully sticks and dog bones.  Some dogs that are not used to bully sticks may get extremely excited and try to swallow it quickly rather than chew it; this is also common with dog bones.  It is important to ensure that your dog is grinding a dog bone down rather than trying to "bit it".  Biting on bones (because they are so hard) could be harmful especially if done repetitively.

We also want to stress that it is of particular importance to supervise smaller breeds of dogs, as they have smaller internal systems.  We recommend taking bully sticks or any other chew like an Antlerz, away from your dog when there is 1-2 inches left.  While all of our products are safe and fully digestible it is still important to supervise your dog to ensure that they do not have any adverse effects.

Monster Dog Chews

We have just recently launched two new and exciting products on Best Bully Sticks! We are introducing two new huge dog chews for the "big guys", as we are asked constantly to find longer lasting all natural dog chews especially for giant or aggressive breeds.

Our first new product is the Jumbo Bully Stick; these are 30-50% larger in terms of diameter than our thick bully sticks and will last much longer as well!  These sticks are truly a rarity in that they are low odor, all natural, and extremely thick.  They should last about as long as a 12" braided bully stick. As with all of our bully sticks we don't add any "extra stuff" like peroxide or potassium to make them "odorless"; we believe in keeping our products as natural as possible and any beef product should have a faint smell of beef to it....if it is truly natural.

Our second new product is the Monster Antlerz dog chew.  These are humongous...that is really the only way to describe them.  They should last even the biggest of dogs several weeks to several months depending on chewing time.   These Antlerz are about 6-8" in length and about 6-8" in circumference (wrapping a tape measure around the product).  Like the other Antlerz products, these are very high in trace minerals, which add some great health benefits to these chews also.  There are no other products on the market like this and it is about time that there is a natural dog chew available for "giant" breed dogs that will last an extremely long amount of time.

Himalayan Dog Chews

Many of you have probably already noticed the addition of this product to our site and I wanted to tell you a little more about the product and why we have chosen to add it to our line-up of all natural dog treats and chews.

The Himalayan Dog Chew is a long lasting chew that comes in three sizes small, medium, and large. We would recommend the small size for toy breeds like Pugs, Pomeranian, Shitzu, etc....the medium size for beagles, terriers, poodles, etc... and lastly the large size for boxers, labs, and retrievers.The chews are made from boiling yak and cow milk, with lime juice added to separate the curds. Once separated, the remaining cheese is dried (a process taking about three weeks) and then cut into pieces for the chews. This treat is high in protein and is all natural, having no additives or preservatives, and the finished product is just simply put, a very hard block of cheese.

This chew requires dogs to work and grind on it consistently to have small flakes and pieces come off to be eaten. Our experience is that these chews are very long lasting and are a great addition to bully sticks, other natural chews, and Antlerz.
