History & Background: Like it’s larger counterpart the Rough Collie, the Shetland Sheepdog is a descendant of the Border Collie. However, unlike other miniature breeds, the Sheltie wasn’t developed by selectively breeding continually smaller sizes each generation. When Border Collies were brought to the Scottish isle of Shetland, they were bred with highly intelligent, long-haired, small dogs. Some of these breeds could have been King Charles Spaniels (not Cavalier), Pomeranians, and the now extinct Greenland Yakki. The first Shelties were more Spitz-type working dogs and then were bred with other Collies and taken to England.

When first developed, breeders called this dog Shetland Collies but Rough Collie breeders didn’t like the name association with their breed.  It was then this breed was given the name Shetland Sheepdog. The Sheltie was used as a herding dog, watchdog and general all-purpose farm helper. Shelties were first recognized by the AKC in the early 1900s.

Height: 13-16 inches

Weight: 16-20 pounds

Coat: A Sheltie’s coat consists of two layers, both very abundant with fur. The outer coat is long, straight and rough. The undercoat is fuzzy, downy and very dense, which gives the Sheltie have a puffy look. The outer coat is water repellent and the undercoat provides relief from temperature extremes. This breed does have a lot of frill and feathering, particularly in the form of a mane and on the fore and hind legs. Sheltie tails are thick with hair as well.  However, Shelties have smooth hair on the face, tips of ears and feet.

Color: There are typically three colors or combinations recognized for the Sheltie; black, sable and blue merle. Black coloring can be present with white or tan, ultimately making this tri-coloring. Sable coloring can range from golden to deep mahogany color, also combining with colors of white and tan. Blue Merle coloring consists of blue, white and tan in combination. Read more

They are 10" in length and the thickness of most standard bully sticks (but will vary slightly). They are great because your pooch can stick their paw in the middle of the curly bully stick, which helps for a great hold while they chew and chew. An additional benefit of these sticks is that they are curly and as such create more friction in the mouth when chewed. These bully sticks are all natural, but do have a slight meat smell!

These rings have a radius (amount of space inside the ring) of 3-4" so they are fairly small, they would be a great choice for any dog but especially the smaller guys. These are a great new item that your dog is sure to love. They are a Bully Stick Ring, which has a 7 inch internal diameter(approximately 20" stretched out). These are great for playing, they can be pulled on for a quick game of tug a war or can be thrown like a frisbee (we have a feeling though that your pooch might not return them to you once they fetch). Like our other bully sticks, these are from free ranging, grass fed bulls and are very low odor. If your dog likes our other bully stick products, these will be a hit as well.

We are introducing some new bully stick items this week....the bully stick ring and bully stick pretzel.  These are both new to the market and we are bringing them to you at the best prices on the internet.  If you are able to find them less expensive anywhere let us know and we will match the price!

I must say that when taking the photo of the bully stick rings the first thing that came to mind was the Olympics...  anyway, they are basically just 6-8" bully sticks that are formed into the shape of a ring.  We would recommend these as great chews for smaller dogs.

The bully stick pretzels are equally as good and are actually made from 7-10" bully sticks to bend them into shape.  Both of these new products can be purchased in bulk to save even more money!   Stay tuned to the blog as we have some really unique (only here) bully stick items that we will be launching in the next week.
