Color: Bassets are generally tricolor (black, tan, and white), open red and white (red spots on white fur), closed red and white (a solid red color with white feet and tails), Honey And White (honey colored back, light brown spotty nose and legs, light brown tails with white tip) and lemon and white. Some Bassets are also classified as a rare gray or blue.

Appearance: Basset Hounds have long, low-set ears and powerful necks, with much loose skin around their heads that forms wrinkles. Their tails are long and tapering and stand upright with a curve. The breed is also known for its hanging skin structure, which causes the face to have a permanently sad look; this, for many people, adds to the breed's charm. The loose, elastic skin around the neck and trailing ears are thought to help catch the scent of what they are tracking. Basset Hounds are a "large dog" on short legs, surprisingly they are long and can reach things on table tops that dogs of similar heights cannot.

Temperament: A mild mannered, even tempered, and laid back breed, the Basset Hound is a breed of dog that is ideal for inexperienced dog owners and those with children or other pets, as he is a sociable creature and gets along with other animals as well as kids and adults. This is a breed that is largely very peace-loving and has a very cheerful disposition. Some Basset Hounds love to act the clown and others will carry themselves with dignity and calmness. The breed tends to be calm, polite and amiable around strangers. These dogs have a great sense of humor, and make wonderful companion and family pets

These dogs have a very responsive nature, and fare well with patient training methods. The Basset Hound is an animal that will be quite happy lazing by the fire, but his tendency to put on weight means that he will need to be exercised on a regular basis. The Basset Hound can sometimes be stubborn, and beware of his love of food, as he will be quite happy to steal any food that he finds on his travels. Although training these dogs is moderately easy with the right attitude, they can be very difficult to housebreak.

Health: The Basset Hound has a life expectancy of around 10-12 years. A number of health problems and issues are associated with this breed and this includes luxating patella, PRA, ectropion, entropion, epilepsy, elbow dysplasia, spinal problems, bleeding disorders, glaucoma, vWD, thyroid problems, and ear infections.

We always love getting emails from our customers & readers asking us to feature their dog or favorite breed for our Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed blog series every Thursday. As always we are honored to oblige.  Thanks all! We are excited to spotlight the Otterhound!

Height: Male 27 inches tall, Female 24 inches tall

Weight: Male 115 lbs, Female 80 lbs

Coat: “Shabby chic” is a good way to describe the coat of the Otterhound. The weather-resistant double coat is made up of a rough, thick top coat that is anywhere from two to six inches in length, and a wooly, oily undercoat. The coat is designed to protect the dog from cold water.

Color: The most common coat colors are black and tan and grizzle.

Appearance: The Otterhound is a shaggy, rough-coated hound who sports a shaggy beard and bushy eyebrows. The head is similar in shape to a Bloodhound, measuring 11 to 12 inches from the end of the nose to the occiput for a 26 inch tall dog, and similarly proportioned for other sized dogs. The muzzle is square, the jaw powerful and the flews deep. The nose should be large and is black or liver in color, depending on the color of the coat. The eyes are deep set and range in color from black to hazel, always complimenting the coat coloring. The ears are set low and should reach the tip of the nose when pulled forward. The tail is high set, long, and tapered, reaching at least to the hock. Webbed feet assist in swimming. The most common colors are black and tan and grizzle.

Temperament: Otterhounds are big, shaggy dogs who love to run and swim, but don't like being told what to do. They are friendly and easy going, happy to greet newcomers with a wag of a their tail. Otterhounds are independent animals, however, who don't like being told what to do or when to do it. Their easy-going nature makes this trait easy to overlook, as it's not likely you'll ask him to do too many things he doesn't want to, other than say, come in from playing outside. Otterhound are best served by experienced dog owners who love the outdoors.

The Otterhound is a great family pet who is enthusiastic, gentle and fun loving. It may not realize its size at times and can be clumsy, so despite the dog’s great love for children, it should be supervised while playing with them. Although affectionate and intelligent, they can be hard to train, so a firm, loving and patient hand is essential. The Otterhound is exceptionally friendly toward other dogs as well as people, making it a constant people pleaser but a lousy guard dog. The breed enjoys baying occasionally but does not bark excessively, and most people would describe the dog as a generally laid back and amiable companion.

Health: The average life span of the Otterhound is 11 to 13 years. Otterhounds are generally healthy, but like all breeds, they're prone to certain health conditions. Not all Otterhounds will get any or all of these diseases, but it's important to be aware of them if you're considering this breed. Prone to Gastric dilatation-volvulus (aka bloat), Hip Dysplasia, Canine Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia (CIT) an immune systems disorder.

• T-shirt or tank top

Doggie Dino Tank How-To

1. Print template here. Cut out spiky spine template. Using disappearing-ink pen, trace the spikes of the spine onto felt. Cut around the spikes, leaving them attached to the felt as shown.
2. Cut through the slits in the slit template. Place it on the shirt, and trace lines through the slits. Snip out the slits on the shirt.
3. Place the felt strip inside the shirt. Pull the spikes through the slits so they stand up.
