We always love getting emails from our customers & readers asking us to feature their dog or favorite breed for our Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed blog series every Thursday. As always we are honored to oblige.  Thanks Cindy! We are excited to spotlight your beautiful American Eskimo. Everyone say “Hello” by sending out warm barks and tail wags to Maddie! Maddie was adopted from the SPCA when she was about 3yrs old and she is about 11 or 12 now. It was love at first sight for both Maddie and Cindy!

Height: 9-19 inches ( toy, miniature and standard)

Weight: 6-40 lbs ( toy, miniature and standard)

Coat: The American Eskimo Dog has a glorious standoff double-coat. They have a dense undercoat and a long topcoat that combines to create an overall fluffy coat which sheds year round. The outer coat is straight and does not curl or wave. Eskimos are fluffy all over, but they boast a pronounced ruff of fur at the neck and the fur on the tail is also very pronounced. The backs of the front and rear legs are well feathered. This breed is an average shedder that "blows" their coat twice a year.

Color: The American Eskimo dog comes in two colors: white and white with biscuit or cream markings.

Appearance: The American Eskimo Dog, originally called the American Spitz and now also known as the Eskie. Many people think that American Eskimo Dogs are miniature Samoyeds. They have a similar look, but the Eskimos are a breed all their own. They are compact dogs who come in three sizes: toy, miniature and standard. All three versions have the same physical characteristic: wedge-shaped heads, erect triangular ears, fluffy white coats, and large, plumed tails that rest or curl across the dog's back. Their eyes are brown and they have stark white eyelashes, and their toenails are also white.

Temperament: Happy and always energetic, the American Eskimo dog loves to run, play, learn new tasks and solve problems. As the name suggests, this breed especially loves playing in the snow, so they make a perfect companion for families who live in cooler climates. They are vigilant, with a keen ear, and make excellent watchdogs.

Commonly referred to as the Eskie, this breed is compact and strong. A Nordic type dog, they are exceedingly agile and alert. They are considered to be one of the most intelligent of all dog breeds. The American Eskimo Dog is well balanced, hardy, and known for their longevity. This versatile breed possesses outstanding working skills, and makes a lovely companion.

Bred solely to be companions, the American Eskimo Dog thrives on being part of the family. This charming and playful breed is excellent with children, and loves to be lavished with attention. They are patient and loving with children, and their good nature make them a fine match for first-time dog owners. They are suspicious and wary of strangers and make good guardians of their family and home. They love to bark and will sound the alarm whenever they deem it necessary. This breed does not do well if left alone for extended periods of time or if they are isolated, as they will engage in destructive activities.

Health: The average life span of the American Eskimo is 15-16 years. This breed tends to become overweight easily, so proper diet and exercise is needed to maintain an overall well being.  Although generally very healthy, possible health issues include: PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy), luxating patella, and hip dysplasia. The breed can have a tendency towards allergies and most commonly, tear-staining. This breed also is known in some cases to have dental issues.

A healthy dog is a beautiful dog! As dogs age their skin and coat can become dry and brittle. One way to add moisture and shine to your dogs coat is flax-seed and oils, which serve as a great source of omega 3 fatty acids, fiber and anti-oxidants. Fatty acids, an essential ingredient to any pets diet, help to improve the texture of his coat, making for fuller, shinier hair. Healthy skin and a healthy coat are not only beautiful to look at and to pet, but also give a good indication of your dog’s internal health.

Often time a dull coat can be a sign of other skin deep health problems like a weakened immune system. Flax-seed not only makes the coat shiny, it has positive benefits on the overall health and well being of your dog. By adding Flax-seed to your dog's diet you can improve your dogs immune system and cardiovascular health. As well as prevent and treat inflammatory disease (arthritis), heart disease, cancer, allergies and coat issues. Here is a recipe that will ensure your dog has a healthy shiny coat. This Shiny Coat Dog Treat Recipe is not only healthy for your dog but taste good!

Ingredients

1 cup organic whole wheat flour (substitute with gluten free option such as rice flour or buckwheat)

1/4 teaspoon of salt

4 1/2 tablespoons flaxseed meal (substitute with salmon oil and cod liver oil)

1 organic egg

1 tablespoon of local honey

1/3 cup of organic beef or chicken stock

Preparation

Preheat oven to 400°F. Grease a baking sheet with butter or a little oil.

In a bowl, mix together the flour, salt, and flaxseed meal. In another bowl combine the egg and honey.

Stir the flour mixture into the egg mixture and add stock until the dough has the consistency of drop biscuits.

Drop heaping tablespoons of the dough onto the baking sheet, leaving about 1 inch between the biscuits.

Bake for about 15 minutes. Remove, cool on a wire rack, and store, tightly covered, in a glass or ceramic container for up to a week or in the freezer for up to three months.

Guide Dogs of America is dedicated to its mission to provide guide dogs and instruction in their use, free of charge, to blind and visually impaired men and women from the United States and Canada so that they may continue to pursue their goals with increased mobility and independence. Guide Dogs of America provide the blind and visually impaired with independence, companionship, confidence and freedom.

History

Guide Dogs of America was founded over 60 years ago by Joseph Jones, Sr. (a retired member of the IAMAW) with the help of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW or IAM)

When Mr. Jones became blind, he considered all his options and decided his mobility needs would best be met by using a guide dog. He applied to all the existing schools, but he was declined because of his “advanced age”. He was only 57 years old.

Mr. Jones was a determined man and “no” was not a word in his vocabulary. He turned to the IAM for help, soliciting assistance from the IAM’s Executive Council. The IAM Executive council conducted extensive research, determined there was a growing need for guide dog services, and therefore endorsed the founding of International Guiding Eyes (IGE) In 1948. The IAMAW continues to be a generous supporter and staunch advocate of the school’s mission today.

IGE was one of the first guide dog schools to be founded by a blind individual. It was also one of the first schools to adopt a policy of no upper age discrimination.

In 1992, International Guiding Eyes changed their “doing-business-as” name to Guide Dogs of America in an effort to communicate more clearly the services provided by the organization. Now the organization operates under the name Guide Dogs of America as an International Guiding Eyes Program. Today Guide Dogs of America seeks new and better ways of helping the blind community.

How Can You Help Guide Dogs of America?

Your contribution of time and/or money helps them provide guide dogs free of charge to blind individuals. With the gift of a guide dog, these men and women are better able to pursue their goals, fulfill their dreams, and participate in their communities. Guide dogs not only provide the gift of increased independence, confidence, and mobility, but they also act as a trusted companion providing new opportunities for social interaction. Help make a difference in the life of a blind individual in the form of a loving, four pawed partner today.

Why Give? Guide Dogs of America is a nonprofit organization that is supported by the generosity of individuals, foundations, corporations, and other organizations in their mission to provide loyal and loving guide dogs free of charge to blind and visually impaired individuals.

With nearly 80% of all the funds they receive going directly to program services, you know your money is well spent. They do not receive any funding from local, state or federal government.

The cost to provide one guide dog and match it with its new blind partner is $42,000.00. Your gifts help them fulfill their mission and reflect your own personal desire to help others live more independently with the loving partnership of a guide dog.

Your dog does not have to be a Golden Retriever to love a good game of fetch.  Fetch is a great form of exercise and helps promote bonding with man's best friend. But before you partake in an energetic game of fetch you must first teach your dog how to play. It is true that some dogs learn faster then others, while others have mastered the art of the ball chase but not the retrieval. The key to a good game of fetch is not only teaching your dog to run after the ball, but how to bring it back. Like any dog training we do recommend teaching your dog how to fetch at a younger age. If your older dog has not mastered the art of fetch no worries you can still teach an old dog new tricks!
