Introducing Beef Trachea- Made in the USA

beef trachea usaIntroducing new Beef Trachea from Best Bully Sticks, exclusively Made in the USA! They are just as tasty, crunchy, delicious, and long-lasting as our other Tracheas, just made right here in America!

These Beef Tracheas are extra long-lasting as they are large trachea chews, varying in size from 8" to 13" inches. They are a bit greasy but full of flavor, as all trachea chews are, so we recommend you feed them to your dog outside.

Trachea are probably the most exciting dog chew on the market right now. They are sometimes referred to as "moo-tubes" or "windies". They are a hollow chew that last a long time. Trachea are high in both chondroitin and glucosamine (These naturally occurring agents have both been proven as effective in promoting healthy joints in dogs). Give them a try at Best Bully Sticks, and we are sure that you won’t be disappointed!

Our Made in the USA Beef Trachea come in packs of 25 and 50.

Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed: We Honor the Samoyed

SamoyedWe always love getting emails from our customers & readers asking us to feature their dog or favorite breed for our Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed blog series every Thursday. As always we are honored to oblige. We are excited to spotlight the Samoyed.

Height: Male: 45-65; Female: 35-50 lbs

Weight: Male: 21-23.5; Female: 19-21 inches

Coat: The Samoyed has a long and thick double coat and requires a lot of grooming. The outercoat should be harsher than the undercoat, but still fairly soft. Undercoat should be short, thick, and should have wool like texture.

Color: The extra-thick double coat may be white, cream, white and biscuit,  or all biscuit in color.

Appearance: The Samoyed is a strong, alert, agile Arctic dog who carries himself with poise, dignity and grace. The broad head is wedge-shaped and forms an equilateral triangle on lines between the inner base of the ears and the central point of the stop. The muzzle is neither too wide nor too thin and tapers toward the nose. The lips are black and curve upward, giving the appearance of an ever-present smile. The nose should be black, but liver, brown or “Dudley” colored noses are not penalized in the show ring. The erect ears are triangular in shape and rounded at the tip. Built to withstand hard work in harsh weather, the body should be muscular and the chest should be deep. The feet are large and covered in thick hair to protect against the elements. The tail is long and curls over the back.

Temperament: This is a very peaceful breed that tends to be very active. Very loyal, the Samoyed usually favors his master but will be friendly to most people. A very sociable breed, he is not only beautiful but makes a wonderful companion. Samoyeds are perky, dependable playmates, often wearing "smiles" on their faces. They are full of fun, and love nothing more than an afternoon of frisky activity in the snow. They are active and alert, indoors and out.

Samoyeds are lively, happy dogs who adore people and often have a mischievous sense of humor. They are excellent with children and always have time for a romp in the yard, especially in the snow. Samoyeds will bark to announce a visitor, but they are not guard dogs as once they are done announcing the newcomer, will most likely cozy up to the visitor to solicit a rub down. Samoyeds are great family dogs, though they tend to favor one person above all others – usually the person who is in charge of feeding and exercise. They are excellent companions for people who like the outdoors. Samoyeds are always up for a good hike in the woods, and will be happy to keep you warm overnight on a camping trip. They can be difficult to train, but Sammies are generally well behaved and make a great choice for fist time dog owners.

Health: The average life span of the Samoyed is 12-15 years. Here are some breed-specific hereditary diseases to be aware of:

  • Diabetes mellitus similar but not identical to human Type I (insulin deficiency): The disease occurs in middle-aged Samoyeds, the mean age at diagnosis is seven years. The cause is a chronic inflammation of the pancreas and / or autoimmune destruction of beta cells of islets of Langerhans. Moreover, in affected dogs auto antibodies were found to insulin.
  • Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA). The disease leads to a slowly progressive loss of vision, which eventually leads to blindness. The first symptoms appear between two and five years of age.
  • Short legs in conjunction with eye abnormalities.
  • Pulmonary stenosis occurs more frequently in Samoyeds. The disease can cause shortness of breath, cardiac arrhythmias and tiring on motion and increases the risk of congestive heart failure
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Eye problems such as cataracts and glaucoma and other retinal problems
  • The breed can also be affected by Sebaceous adenitis, an uncommon idiopathic autoimmune skin disease.

Spotlight on a Rescue or Charity: We Salute Pets For The Elderly Foundation

We are dedicated to spreading awareness about pet related causes such as pet adoption. So we are excited to announce our new Tuesday blog series “Spotlight on a Rescue or Charity”, to pay tribute and honor animal rescue, shelters and charities. These are our unsung heroes across America dedicated to enriching, saving and nurturing the lives of animals in need.  We hope you will champion our cause by barking the word about the importance of pet adoption and donating your time and finances to your local animal shelter or rescue. Be a voice, email us if you know of a deserving animal rescue or charity that should be spotlighted and recognized. There’s no disputing animals have always had a positive impact on their owners’ lives. Now, evidence suggests four-legged friends are a real health benefit for elderly people, helping them live longer, healthier and happier lives. With that said, we are proud to spotlight “Pets for the Elderly Foundation”. Pets can help people get over the loss of a loved one, depression, and remind them that they are loved and needed, so for the elderly and homeless pets, this charity is a win win. Thanks for joining friends together for life!

Pets For The Elderly FoundationAbout Pets for the Elderly Foundation

The most serious disease for older persons is not cancer or heart disease - it's loneliness. Pets offer affection, unconditional love, fight loneliness, and can help ease the loss of a loved one. Their mission is to give both a lonely, elderly person and an innocent, unwanted animal the gift of health and happiness through companionship.

The Pets for the Elderly Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, helps pay the fees to participating animal shelters throughout the United States for senior citizens (age 60 and over) who adopt a companion dog or cat from a participating shelter — including pre-adoption veterinary exams and spay/neuter, if part of the adoption fee.

Pets For The Elderly FoundationPets For the Elderly began in Cleveland in 1992, and expanded nationally in 2001 with a goal of saving as many companion animals as possible from euthanasia. They have a small staff, and all administrative costs are paid by the organization's founder. Currently there are 55 participating shelters in 29 states. Many more shelters would like to participate, shelters are added as funding becomes available. In 2010, the Pets for the Elderly Foundation assisted with the adoption of 5,770 companion animals. Their goal is to save the lives of 7,500 companion pets annually, while enhancing the lives of an equal number of senior citizens.

They urgently need your help! Your monetary donation can make a difference. Few causes can have the potential benefits that will result from your contribution. You not only save the life of an animal, you can make a dramatic difference in the life of an elderly person.

How can you help Pets for the Elderly?

The Pets for the Elderly Foundation helps with the cost of adoption of a companion animal by a senior citizen - thus reducing the number of animals in shelters. and providing companionship, health and happiness to senior citizens. You can make a difference in the lives of seniors – and in the lives of discarded pets – by making a donation to Pets for the Elderly. Your heartfelt monetary donation will help allow even more shelters to participate in this bark-worthy cause. By supporting this charitable foundation, you can give a senior citizen and pet a new lease on life.

Be a voice! Support Pets for the Elderly  by “Liking” their Facebook page. Bark the word about their cause, help save and enrich the lives of our paw pals and the elderly! A love connection and match made in heaven is just around the corner!

How To Potty Train Stubborn Dog: 101 Dog Care Tips- Tip 119

How To Potty Train Stubborn DogIf you are new pet owner then potty training your dog should be at the top of your to do list. Especially if you don't want your entire house smelling like a porta potty. Cleaning up your dog's #1 and #2 business is a fact of life. But what if your adorable pup is also stubborn and refuses to take it outside? Well, we have a few tips from our friends at ehow just for you! With love and patience your dog will soon be doing his business outdoors instead of on your newly polished wood floors or soiling your carpet.

1. Limit Dog's Home Access. Prepare an area where your dog has limited access in your home. This might involve putting up a toddler gate across a doorway or keeping him a kitchen or a laundry room. His area should have only solid surface flooring, no carpeting. Put his crate in the area. Your dog's crate must be big enough that he can comfortably stand, turn around and stretch out when lying down

2. Potty Training Pads are Lifesavers! Place newspapers on a large part of the floor in her area and place a potty training pad in the middle. These pads are treated with pheromones that tell your dog to "go here." Make a separate feeding area, preferably outside for now, although you must provide fresh water for your dog at least once per hour.

3. Devise a feeding and napping schedule. Stubborn dogs are often used to eating and napping on their own schedule, which leads to them assuming they can do whatever they like, whenever they choose. Puppies need to eat at least three times a day; older dogs should have two mealtimes. Until your dog is housebroken, his napping and overnight sleep times must be carefully controlled, as well.

4. Potty Break Immediately After Nap & Meal time. Take your dog to the newspaper or outside (preferably) to eliminate immediately after she wakes up from a nap or as soon as she finishes eating. The younger your dog is, the more important it is to move her quickly after these two activities to her elimination spot. This is where patience and consistency come in. Stay with your dog, either in the yard or while on leash and tell him, "Go potty." Allow her to sniff the ground and walk about until she goes.

5. Reward With Tasty Treat. Keep treats in your pocket and reward your dog with one as soon as he goes in the right spot. Lavish praise upon him, saying, "Good potty, good potty" so he understands the relationship between his potty and your praise.

6. Crate your dog until she learns to go in the correct spot. Crating is not inhumane if done correctly. In fact, dogs come to love their crates and often go there of their own accord to get away from people and other animals. However, you must keep your dog in her crate no longer than a couple of hours at a time during the day and no more than six hours overnight. Each time you let her out; take her immediately to his potty spot.

7. Stay consistent. Stubborn dogs need strict adherence to schedules and limitations. You dog wants to please you but you have to teach him how. Older dogs need not be difficult to train if you are consistent in your methods.

Tips:

1. Clean up potty accidents immediately. Dogs use their noses as indicators of where to go potty and when they smell residual urine odors, they naturally think that is the place to go. Take a potty accident to his potty pad or outdoors and leave it there. Some dog breeds are notorious for being stubborn when housebreaking. If you have trouble with a terrier, a pointer, a setter or a Chihuahua, you must be extra consistent with the dog's sleeping, eating and potty walking schedule. Just one slip-up can set you back to square one.

2. Practice Patience & Kind Words. Avoid using harsh words or smacking a dog that has a potty mistake, they learn better when they are not screamed at or hit. A dog who was potty trained but suddenly begins having accidents may have a medical condition. See your veterinarian to rule out any physical problems.
