Brrrr..Cold Winter Paw Care for Your Dog : 101 Dog Care Tips- Tip 29

dogsnowIf you haven't already realized dogs love to play in the snow. But when the mercury drops,  the bitter cold and  snowy winter months can take a huge toil causing chapping and cracking of your dog’s paws & pads. As loving pet owners it is important to be aware & beware of the dangers that snow and cold weather present to our pets paws. Making dog paw care a top priority will save your dog a lot of paw-ache, pain & trouble.  Here are some winter paw care pet tips to minimize pain and discomfort while keeping your pups paws healthy.

1. These Booties Are Made for Walking! Grit, salt & ice melting granulates & chemicals from sidewalks and streets can be very troublesome to your pet. The salt can irritate their pads and cause painful cracking. So, introducing a pair of booties into your dogs wardrobe will protect your dog's feet from salt, chemical de-icers and grit. As well as lower your pets risk of getting hypothermia by helping to retain body heat.

If you and your dog are not keen on the idea of booties be sure to rinse and dry your pet's feet after being outside in snow and icy conditions. Often times your pet will lick their paws when they are wet or to sooth irritation, leading to ingestion of these toxic substances. Instead opt for a non toxic & pet friendly deicing solutions. Sand, gravel and non-clumping cat litters are the safest option for traction on ice and snow.

2. Apply a soothing paw balm. To prevent ice balls from forming during longer outside adventure's, rubbing your dogs pads with a soothing paw balm or vaseline before going outside can help. Be sure to use and edible all natural balm, because dogs will lick away.

Always check your dogs paws after coming indoors to make sure paws are free from rock salt debris which can cause cracking & drying. Snow, grit and de-icing products can accumulate in these cracks and contribute to blisters, sore pads and infections. Balm should be applied after a long walk outdoors.

3. Keep Nails Trimmed. Nails that are too long can cause a considerable amount of discomfort when walking on cold, hard surfaces. Always keep your pet's nails trimmed to a comfortable length.

4. Pave the way! We all love a shoveled walk way free of ice and snow, and so does your pet. Always give you and your pet a safe path, free from the winter elements. Sharp pieces of ice or snow can cause abrasions on the pads.

Injuries happen from stepping on items obscured by snow, sharp edges on ice, and sometimes from snow toys and implements used to remove snow. So when you are done shoveling the sidewalks & walkways make sure to put tools away.

5. Give a Warm foot bath. Wash your dog's paws in warm water when you get home. It will warm his feet up and melt ice that has formed between his toes. Not to mention it will wash off any toxic salt or deicing chemical residue on his paws that your dog might be tempted to lick off. Salt & deicing chemicals can cause vomiting, diarrhea and death if ingested so be diligent and keep paws squeaky clean. Once paws are cleaned apply a soothing paw balm.

6. First Aid 101: It's a good idea to check your dog's paws thoroughly & daily for any abrasions, cracked pads and grit stuck between his toes. Treat your dogs paw injuries promptly. If dog has a minor injury gently cleanse the wound with warm water and a mild soap, and apply pressure to stop bleeding. Paw pads are very thick and slow to heal; deep cuts to the paw pads usually require sutures for proper healing and will require vet assistance.

7. Trim Fur between the pads. Compacted snow, grit and salt on the bottom of your dog's paws or your boots can make walking difficult, and affect you and your dogs  ability to stay on your feet. Snowy slush is attracted to your dogs fur. Keeping the fur between pads trimmed will reduce the amount of slush that clings to their vulnerable paws and prevent your pup from slipping and sliding on the sidewalks.

Chew-monial : Virtual Hugs & Fish Stix Licks From Our Furry Friends at Husky Camp Rescue

We here at Best Bully Sticks are always excited to get chew-monials from tail wagging fans & customers. So, if you can image we leaped for joy when we received a virtual hug in the form of a letter from our friends at Husky Camp, a Siberian Husky Rescue. They were one of our five winners for of our last months Best Bully Sticks $3000 Fish Stix Favorite Dog Rescue Giveaway as a way to reward deserving rescues, shelters and their dogs. So, we want to send a heartfelt thanks to ever one you nominated & voted for their favorite shelter. Paws up to you & all the rescues and shelters who make a difference each day in the lives of deserving animals. Don't forget to support your local animal shelter & rescue and open up your heart & home to a pet in need of adoption.

Dear Best Bully Sticks-

We wanted to thank you for your generous donation of Fish Sticks to our Siberian Husky Rescue. It was an honor to see the support that we must have for our rescue and we thank all of our loyal supporters. As you can see from the attached photos, they were well received and enjoyed by everyone! Before we even opened the box, it became a chew toy… so we knew they’d love them, and we were right.. they’re a big hit around here!

ROO1I also included a photo of one of our foster dogs who is recovering from hip and leg surgery. “Big Roo” as we call him (he hops around on one back leg) is a young Malamute who was presumably hit by a car and then picked up by an animal shelter that didn’t do anything to fix him. When we got a hold of him he was in a lot of pain and needed major surgery and pins in his hip to save his broken leg. He is only 9 months old and has a lot of energy, so recovery has been tough. He has to be confined so that the other dogs don’t play with him or get up and try to do too much. He has “crate fever” and gets a little crazy.

We have found that we can toss him a Bully Stick from Best Bully Sticks and it calms him down and takes out some of his anxiety and allows him to get his much needed rest. The more we can keep him resting, the faster he can recover and the Bully Sticks have been a tremendous help in that. Thank you again for your support of rescue, it means a lot to us.

Sincerely,

Kevin Marlin

The Scoop on Homemade Dry Dog Food-Benefits & Recipe: 101 Dog Care Tips- Tip 25

dog_foodWith recent pet food recalls many pet owners are opting to make their own dog food to gain peace of mind & save on cost. Contrary to popular belief gathering up last night dinner leftovers and throwing them in your dogs dish is not the same as making nutritional homemade dog food. Remember that not all human food is good for your dog to devour.

Although recycling your dinner leftovers sounds like a tempting, easy, quick & simple solution it can be hazardous to your dogs health. So for your pets safety & overall well-being here is a better solution for all you Suzy homemakers, health conscious pups & dog loving DIYer's.  Into the kitchen we go! Making dry dog food from scratch is a simple process using fresh & healthy ingredients. With so many wonderful recipes to choose this is sure to please any finicky or fussy canine of all breeds, shapes & sizes. Making homemade dry dog food puts you in control over what your loyal companion consumes. You can feel good knowing you feed your dog preservative-free, nutritional food.

So what are the benefits of homemade dog food?

1. Prevent or reduce the risk of a number of health problems that result from eating potentially toxic or contaminated commercially prepared items. While providing your dog with essential nutrients & minerals for healthy life.

2. With the current state of the economy it can also be easier on your pockets & reduce overall cost of each meal. You can save big by buying whole grains & staples in bulk.

3. Feeding a dog freshly prepared food instead of commercial products filled with additives and preservatives may also give them more energy and reduce the risk of obesity.

4.  Homemade dog foods usually cause fewer allergic reactions than commercial dog foods. Easier to manage a dogs diet who have food allergies & sensitivities.

So, whats the scoop on homemade dog food ingredients?

1. Pet owners need to use fresh and natural ingredients, and ensure that every meal is nutritionally balanced. Your dogs diet should consist of protein & carbohydrates.

Protein ingredients include:
skinless roasted chicken breast , ground beef, lamb chop, Atlantic salmon,  hard boiled whole egg, cottage cheese & tofu

Carbohydrates ingredients include: long-grained brown or white rice, pasta, white potatoes, sweet potatoes,  oats, pearled barley, couscous, dry tapioca

2. Remember not all vegetables are good for your canine & their digestion. Choose asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale and zucchini. Cook vegetables with hard rinds prior to feeding. Select darker vegetables, because they are typically higher in nutritional value.

3. Process all vegetables before adding them into the dog food, as many are hard to digest. Use the puree setting on your blender to guarantee that the mixture is as smooth as possible.

4. Avoid meats that are more prone to carry parasites such as Trichinosis, as dogs are sensitive to contracting the disease from eating raw, unclean or ill-prepared meats. Cook all meats thoroughly and dice into small pieces before feeding them to your dog or adding them to a mixture.

5. Select lean protein sources such as chicken, tuna, venison, beef and small amounts of organ meats. Too much liver, for example, can cause bloating and diarrhea.

6. Eggs are a safe, strong source of lean protein. Add them to dog food mixtures or simply drop a well cooked, scrambled egg or two into the dog bowl as a treat. Don't feed them to your dog raw or undercooked.

7. Follow the general proportion of 1 part lean protein to 2 parts vegetables when making dog food at home.

8. Because homemade dog food doesn't have preservatives and additives, the pet owner will need to monitor the food regularly to make sure it does not spoil.

9.  If you are going to make your dogs food be sure to consult with your vet or nutritional pet expert for advice to help you develop a well-balanced, nutritionally complete diet for your dog to meet his or her specific needs.

What foods should your dog avoid?

There are several foods that are toxic to pets and can cause your dog to get deathly ill. Here are a few things you should avoid putting into your homemade dog food. Grapes, raisins, chocolate, artificial sweeteners, raw meat, onions, garlic and artificial fats should not be on your pets grocery list.
