The Utterly Adorable Dachshund

DachshundThe utterly adorable Dachshund is an incredibly popular dog breed with dog lovers everywhere. In most cases, when one thinks of a Dachshund, they will instantly be provided with the image of a small dog that sports a long body, shiny coat and floppy ears. However, many are not aware that the Dachshund breed is diverse, including a range of dogs of various sizes and coats.

In the beginnings, the Dachshund was bred in order to effectively hunt badgers. In order to fit the requirements for this task, the Dachshund had to be built low whilst being incredibly agile and muscular in order to efficiently pursue a badger. Due to its long body, the Dachshund was originally ridiculed slightly due to its ‘sausage’ like body, but its impressive characteristics soon stopped these remarks. Today, the Dachshund is still maintains its hunting instincts so during walks if let off his leash, will enjoy nothing more than following a scent in order to catch prey unless trained correctly.

The Dachshund can be found in two sizes – either standard or miniature. Although both types possess more or less the same appearance, the Miniature should weigh no more than 11 pounds and was predominately bred in order to hunt rabbits. In terms of coat, the Dachshund can be found to possess either a short haired/smooth, long haired or wire haired coat. The short haired breed is the most commonly found breed, possessing a short and shiny coat which is more commonly associated to the idea of a Dachshund. Longer haired Dachshunds will have a sleeker, softer coat that will be prominent on their ears, tail and legs. As the name suggests, wire haired Dachshunds will have a denser, shorter and wiry outer coat and will often sport a beard and bushy eyebrows.

Along with the types of coat, a Dachshund can also sport a variety of different colored coats. The most common colors are a red/rusty red shade or a combination of black and tan. In regards to black/tan Dachshunds, they will sport all black fur with tan patches on the head, chest and paws. I addition to a different color of coat, a Dachshund’s coat may also sport some form of pattern. These patterns include a dapple pattern which consists of a dark base color with lighter areas, a double dapper pattern which consists or varying white patches across the body; and the brindle pattern which is identified by dark stripes which go across the body.

Aside from their looks, there are an abundance of reasons why the Dachshund makes for a great companion. They are loving dogs who will dote completely on their master and will provide buckets of affection. They are also incredibly curious and will desire to be involved in everything their owner may be doing. They are also very intelligent and playful which makes them quick learners and an ideal breed of dog for those with families. Try using dog toys to exercise the Dachshund's mind. However, often a Dachshund may be quite overly independent and so can be hard to train in the early beginnings as he strives to investigate his surroundings. Nevertheless, due to their size they can adapt well to smaller surroundings.

The Smooth Coat has a straight, smooth, short, and glossy coat that should all be of equal length along the body of the dog. The Wirehaired has a coat of broken appearance with wiry, coarse, and harsh hair.

Spotlight on a Breed: Dachshund

A reddish-brown Dachshund

A reddish-brown Dachshund

Weight: 16 – 28 lbs (11 lbs for a miniature)

Height: 10 – 15 inches

Coat: Smooth, Long Haired, Wire (least common)

Color: Red is dominant, but also black, faun, brown, chocolate, tan. Can be tri-color or dapple as well as solid color.

Appearance

Dachshunds are long bodied (which is why they are often called "weiner" dogs) and muscular. Their hair can be smooth, long, or wire. The wire hair Dachshund is the least common, and is often mistaken for another breed. Their eye color is typically dark, though lighter Dachshunds can have lighter eyes, and dapple colored Dachshunds are known to have different colored eyes (heterochromia).

Temperament

Dachshunds are playful, fun dogs with a propensity for chasing small birds, small animals, and balls with great ferocity. They are quite clever and rarely shy (considered a poor trait if they are). While not shy, they can be wary of unfamiliar people and may bark or growl at strangers until they get to know them. Fairly energetic, it is not unknown for some to be sedate, but they can become destructive if bored, so keeping them stocked with chew toys like toys and bully sticks is a good idea.

They may or may not be good with small children. Some will avoid children, whereas others will be fiercely loyal to them as family members. However, due to their back problems, small children should be taught to be gentle with them, and you may want to avoid having small children around them

Health

Dachshunds are prone to spinal problems, especially Intervertebral Disk Disease (IVDD) due to their long spinal column and short rib cage. They can also be prone to Patellar Luxation, a condition where they knee doesn't move along the joint correctly. Dapples are prone to blindness and deafness.

Top Ten Most Popular Dog Breeds

The top dog breeds can be debated forever, but for the purposes of this list, we're going to use the top ten most popular dog breeds based on American Kennel Club breed registrations. That being said, I welcome any and all opinions on what you think should fall into the Top Ten List of Most Popular Dog Breeds.

Bulldog10. Bulldogs – These lovable dogs have long held a place in the hearts of pet owners that are looking for a dog that is shorter, won't require as much exercise, but has a personality as big as its jowels.

Shih Tzu9. Shih Tzu – This Chinese breed with its vaguely lion like appearance and attractive coat is popular as both a pure bred dog and for cross-breeding with other breeds for desired physical and temperament traits. These are great house dogs as they don't require a great deal of exercise and are perfectly happy staying at home chewing on a Himalayan dog chew.

Poodle8. Poodles – Known for their distinctive appearance and intelligence, the Poodle are most often associated with French elegance and an aristocratic nature.

Dachshund7. Dachshunds – These short little dogs are a favorite of dog lovers everywhere, coming in both a short haired and long haired variety. These playful and fun dogs are great for families as they can entertain with their intelligence and playfulness while playing with toys or begging for dog treats.

Boxers6. Boxers – Originally from Germany, this stocky breed of medium size is known for their large chest and square jaw. Bright and energetic with a playful temperament, these dogs are great for active owners that can exercise with their pet.

Beagle5. Beagles – The winner of this year's Best in Show at the Westminster Dog Show, the beagle is one of the most recognizable dogs, with animated dogs like Snoopy carrying the beagle image into the entertainment world. Golden Retriever4. Golden Retrievers – A larger dog, the Golden Retriever are kindly and friendly, and are known for being friendly with any and all comers that are willing to give them a pat on the head. As the name implies, Golden Retrievers love to retrieve, and are great for those looking for a dog they can play with outdoors or watch tear apart a bully stick inside.

German Shepherd3. German Shepherd – Originally bred in Germany for sheep herding, this breed can be found doing everything from police work to working with the blind. Easy to train, these dogs make great house pets and are great for those looking for a dog to complete agility courses with.

Yorkshire Terrier2. Yorkshire Terrier – These tiny little dogs are known for their long coats and personality that doesn't seem to fit with their small bodies. Incredibly intelligent, Yorkies are also independent, which is perfect for those looking for a dog that doesn't have to be coddled all day long.

Labrador Retriever1. Labrador Retriever – The most popular breed of dog according to the AKC, this breed comes in a variety of colors, but is most loved for their mellow nature which makes them great house pets. Not known for aggressive, territorial, or pining behavior, Labrador Retrievers can fit into most household situations and because of this, have become highly sought after because of their gentle nature (they can carry an egg in their mouth).
