BBS Rescue Spotlight: Community Animal Rescue & Adoption Jackson, MS

In Mississippi, one dog became the face of anti-animal cruelty and was a significant factor in getting bills passed in his state. And one animal organization stood behind him, Community Animal Rescue & Adoption in Jackson, Mississippi. This central Mississippi no-kill shelter and rescue is truly a force of change in their city and state. Read more about this rescue in the BestBullySticks.com Rescue Spotlight on Community Animal Rescue & Adoption.

When & Why did you start?
CARA was started in 2001 by four animal lovers who kept running into each other rescuing dogs and cats in the Jackson, MS metro area. CARA has grown from a backyard operation to become Mississippi’s largest no-kill animal rescue organization. Since 2001, CARA has placed over 6000 animals into loving homes. CARA currently cares for 280 dogs, 130 cats, 4 guinea pigs and 2 rabbits.

CARA is a 501(c)3 non-profit, charitable, and educational corporation organized to rescue and provide care, shelter, food, and treatment for abused, unwanted, and stray animals in central Mississippi. The objectives of CARA are to rescue animals in need, restore them to health through nutrition and veterinary care, when necessary, and facilitate their adoption to qualified individuals. CARA works to reduce overpopulation of stray and unwanted animals by supporting spay/neuter programs (including a low cost spay/neuter program for low income and disadvantaged persons), by ensuring that all animals in its care are spayed or neutered prior to adoption, and by educating the public on responsible pet ownership.

BBS Rescue Spotlight: Last Day Dog Rescue

If it were your last day on earth, you’d most likely feel hopeless. However, even in the most desperate situations, hope can win out. That’s what one Detroit-based animal rescue is doing, giving hope back to dogs that wouldn’t otherwise have any: Last Day Dog Rescue.

Recently, BestBullySticks.com was honored to award a 1st place award to LDDR worth $2,500.00. And naturally, we wanted to share their story with you. LDDR was started in 2005 because Pam Peterson, now LDDR's president, saw a great need for dogs being overlooked by other rescues. These dogs, whether sick, a particular breed, or even a dark coated, were being passed up. Their mission is to save as many dogs being held in high-kill shelters or facing life in research laboratories. As a non-profit, LDDR’s all-volunteer staff gives these dogs a second chance at a wonderful life. We spoke with Amanda Krigner, LDDR’s Volunteer & Fundraising Coordinator, about her experiences with the rescue as well as some great success.

When & Why did you start?
I started volunteering with Last Day Dog Rescue this past summer, but have been involved in rescuing for a few years. It is one of the most rewarding experiences you could ever imagine. When it comes down to it, rescuing isn’t about me or you or anyone else, it is about the innocent dogs that do not have a voice of their own. Humans put them through the cruelty they have endured and it’s up to humans to help them. Last Day Dog Rescue is such a pleasure to work with because no dog is discriminated against and we really do rescue a lot of dogs. In 2011, we rescued over 1,000 dogs. That is very impressive for a rescue that is purely foster-based.

I started getting really involved with rescue after I rescued my first dog; she was neglected and starving. Rescue dogs are fantastic dogs because they really do appreciate everything you do for them. They know how rough life can be and they are determined to make your life better because you gave them a second chance. My goal is to spread the word about rescue animals and to work together with local Michigan government to make as many shelters as possible no-kill, especially Oakland County (where I live).

What's different about your rescue?
Last Day Dog Rescue doesn’t discriminate based on breed, age, or health. We pull dogs based on their temperament and personality. Many of the dogs we rescue are old, skinny, heartworm positive, and dogs that not many want in their current condition. We rescue all of our dogs on their last day. We truly are their last hope.

LDDR is foster-based, which means the majority of our dogs are in homes before they go to adoption. In these homes they learn some basic training and how to trust humans again. Read more

Happy Tails : Heartwarming Doggy Adoption Stories

5 days after I had to put my first cattle dog down (he was 16), in Feb 2008, we drove 5 hours on my birthday to a WV shelter to adopt a blue, cattle dog puppy!!! He was the start of my pack. May 2009, my husband surprised me with a red female cattle dog puppy that was scheduled for euthanization. Jan 2010, I adopted a Dobe/ wire haired Jack Russell. What a goofy pack of dogs I have... I love them all!!!

I'm a volunteer transporter for dogs and on a transport in April 2008 I met a beautiful BBD (big black dog) who I just totally fell in love with. She was on her way to rescue from a shelter where she was almost euthanized. I had to have her! I adopted her in May of that year and she's been just the BEST dog for the past couple years. Someday we hope to adopt a second dog.

We adopted our new baby rat terrier a month ago. He made his trip from Arkansas to Maine without a glitch. He was found in a ditch with his brother and sister, and rescued by their wonderful foster mom. He is doing great at family living, and loves is new Labrador sister! He is a part of the family and we are happy to have him!

I have 3 dogs and 3 cats. 2 dogs and 3 cats were adopted from Humane Societies but Diva's story is the most outstanding. Diva was born and raised outside. The only human contact she had was when her owner plunked down food and water for h...er and the three other puppies, turned on his heel, and went back inside. She had never seen a vet, nor had she received any training. So when she stepped into a kennel at Bangor Humane Society, she and her sister Flash (the only living creature she thought she could trust) huddled way in the back, shaking and growling at anyone who came near. Dawn(adoption counselor extraordinaire )was worried. She knew from experience that an animal that’s never been socialized runs the risk of permanent emotional damage.

When Diva, a six-month-old German shepherd/husky mix, and her three siblings arrived at the shelter, they weren’t in bad shape – physically. “They were somewhat skinny,” said adoption counselor Dawn Weber, “but they had no serious health issues.” “All Diva needed,” said Dawn, “was a good bath. She was really dirty and smelly – like her sisters and brother – but she was pretty scared. As soon as she would let us, we bathed her and brushed her out.” Diva makes a great first impression. But she’s been adopted and returned to BHS a whopping five times.

Apparently her indifferent upbringing left her very timid, so she defends herself by growling and barking. That’s why she’s been in foster care with John and Kathy Field since May. And she’s come a long way. “She’s really a lovable little twerp,” said John. “When we first brought her home, she was scared of everything. She’d shy away from us,
avoiding all contact, and bark simply because she was afraid.” Now, she still has some quirky barking behaviors – apparently, she doesn’t like people to take showers and lets them know it; but she’s become a great jogging partner and a star in her agility and obedience class. She’ll chase a ball and bring it back for as long as you want, and she “gets along well with others” at daycare. “She’s a quick study,” said John, “a really smart little girl.” The Fields have learned some simple and effective strategies to deal with Diva’s barking. “Despite her behaviors,” said Kathy, “Diva really loves to be with people – she follows us everywhere.” She’s not aggressive; she’s never bitten anyone – she just lacks confidence in herself. The Fields think she’d be a wonderful pet for a dog-savvy family that understands where she’s come from and are willing to work with her. (Quoted in it's entirety from Bangor Humane Society newsletter)

That's when I adopted Diva in October 2008. I already had 2 dogs, Bodie and Duncan, but had watched her story unfold on the BHS website and just had to bring Diva home where she belonged. I have found her to be an extraordinarily sweet and loving girl with a ton of exuberance! She has a special fondness for children and dotes on them when they come for visits (my grandnephews and next door neighbor). Diva is still a bit fearful of new people but has truly come a long way since becoming a part of our family. And I have grown and become a better person (I sincerely believe) as a result of having adopted Diva. Yes, she now has her much-deserved forever home‼♥
