Best Bully Sticks Rescue Spotlight: In The Arms Of Angels

When luck is present, why not spread it around? Best Bully Sticks thinks luck is catching, especially in the case of our recent 1-Day Animal Shelter/Rescue Giveaway.  As it usually goes, Best Bully Sticks has the opportunity to have a couple 1-Day Giveaways each month. Last week we had a great number of people turn out to vote for their favorite shelters and rescues as usual, however, two rescues were neck in neck the whole day. Rocky Ridge Refuge and In The Arms Of Angels were so close that we decided to let both win a BBS product donation. We were lucky to have extra to donate, so why not let both rescues be lucky? In the process, all the dogs who in the care of these rescues will benefit from these yummy treats! What luck!

Today BBS is highlighting the work of In The Arms Of Angels, a rescue group in Green Valley, AZ.

AOA is a dog rescue that saves dogs from being put to sleep at overcrowded shelters and finds them loving, safe & happy homes. Our mission is to save as many lives as possible, whether it be taking a pregnant mom from the shelter and allowing her to have her puppies in a safe secure home, or taking a dog from the streets that did not have a home. We rehabilitate problem dogs that may have been euthanized from aggression, or that just have no manners. We provide shelter for these homeless pets and training, medical and food for them as well.

Tiffany and Amanda started AOA out of a sheer want and need to help. These women have gained non-profit status as of November 2011 and are helping animals wherever there is need. And of course, the experiences are very rewarding.

When we intake new fosters, many of our them are sick and have to be nursed back to health. To see them so sad and ill, then watch them transform to happy, healthy dogs and then go to a home where they will be treated like the amazing miracle they are, that is the greatest reward.  It really is an amazing process. Best Bully Sticks Breed Spotlight: Saint Bernard

Saint Bernard’s are known as the rescue dogs of the Alpines, but what most don’t know about this giant breed is their rich and interesting progression through history.  Best Bully Sticks Breed Spotlight takes a look into the life of this gentle giant.

History & Background: The origins of the Saint Bernard are thought to coincide with the Sunnenhund breeds, which are the Swiss Mountain and Cattle Dogs. All of these breeds are descendants of the molosser breed that was brought into the Swiss Alps by the ancient Romans. In 1707, the Saint Bernard was first recorded by the monks of the St. Bernard Pass. It’s believed the monks and surrounding famers and dairymen used these dogs as livestock guard as well as rescue people from avalanches high in the mountains. With its incredible strength this dog would pull people from the deep snowy drifts and cart them off to safety.

The original Saint Bernard is probably very different looking from the dog we know today. The Saint Bernard has a striking resemblance to the Newfoundland and for good reason. During the winter of 1816 through 1818, many Saint Bernards died themselves from being stuck in avalanches, so the dog were bred with Newfoundlands in an attempt to preserve the breed.

The Saint Bernard is named after Saint Bernard of Menthon, but was called many other things before earning it’s lasting name, such as "Saint Dogs", "Noble Steeds", "Alpenmastiff", or "Barry Dogs.”

Some famous Saint Bernards include movie characters Beethoven and Cujo, sports mascots including Gumbo of the New Orleans Saints and even J.M. Barrie, author of Peter Pan, owned a Saint Bernard named Porthos. Read more

Dog Care 101: Tip #162 - Dog Water Safety Tips

Now that it’s warming up, Best Bully Sticks knows you’ll be flocking to the water. Any body of water will be teaming with folks looking to cool down. And why not take Fido along too? A lot of dogs enjoy the cool water too but owners need to be aware of potential hazards of the water. Best Bully Sticks gets you and your dog ready for fun in the surf with these handy water safety tips!

Hang Out With Your Dog
Don’t leave your dog unsupervised. You brought your dog to the pool, lake or “swimmin’ hole” to hang out with you, right? Make sure you keep an eye on your dog. Not all dogs are good swimmers.

Buy & USE A Dog Life Jacket
Your dog might be an excellent swimmer, but he will eventually get tired, or be distraced or get a cramp. Buy and use a dog life jacket so your dog is always protected. Rip currents or undercurrents can also be a problem in larger bodies of water. You’ll always be happy you bought and put your dog in a life jacket.

Fun In The Sun & Surf
Best Bully Sticks offers a lot of great dog toys to bring out to the water. Floatable, durable and loads of fun, your dog will thank you for a great water toy! Check out BBS’s entire line of Balls for Dogs that will be great for the water. The West Paw Huck or Planet Dog Orbee-Tuff Medium Orbee are both great choices!

Provide Shade & Comfort
Sun and therefore heat is more intense around bodies of water because of the sun’s reflection and humidity. Make sure you dog has a place to escape to, such as a towel on the beach (hot sand can blister paws), or shade to get out of the sun.

Water, Water Everywhere, But Not A Drop To Drink
Make sure you have fresh, clean water for your dog to drink. Chlorinated pools or lake water can both cause serious health issues for your dog. Chlorine is poisonous to dogs and natural water can contain parasites. Keep a gallon of water and a pop-up bowl for your pup when he’s romping outdoors!

BBS has a great portable water solution. Check out the Handi-Drink Portable Bottle/Bowl for your next trip out to the water!

More Water After The Water
After you and your pup with your fun in the sun and surf, rinsing your dog with clean water is important. This will ensure that your dog won’t keep any unwanted chlorine, salt or water parasites. Make sure to take off and let your dog’s collar dry as not to cause any hot spots.
