Weekly Drool Recipe: Tuko’s Cookies, A Guest Blog from Shelly West’s Vegetarian Ventures

Last week, Best Bully Sticks stumbled upon a great treat recipe from a vegetarian blogger, Shelly West. Shelly is the proud Boxer mom of Tuko, who just turned 6 months old not too long ago and in honor of her boy growing up, she decided to make him a simple but yummy ½-year old treat: Peanut Butter Dog Biscuits. With only 4 ingredients, these little dog cookies are the epitome of easy and all-natural.

After seeing Shelly’s great blog and the adorable Tuko, BBS just had to feature this recipe!  Here is Vegetarian Venture’s (a.k.a Shelly’s) original post.

"Although we have only had Tuko (also sometimes referred to as Taco, Teekee, and Tofu) for 4 months, I can hardly remember not having the little guy around. He is always right there whimpering for attention, sleeping in my lap, licking my face, or begging to go outside. Although he was a real handful at first, he has already mellowed greatly since the bewildered puppy that first arrived at our door step from the farm-like upbringing he was born into.

Although this is a bit late, he turned 6 months last week and I felt like we had to celebrate his excelled maturity in some way….so I made him some dog biscuits! I thought about cutting them out with cookie cutters and finding a frosting recipe but he was whimpering for me to play with him the whole time I was making these things. Needless to say, I figured my attention to him was more important than making his next snack look pretty."

Ingredients

2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup oats
1/3 cup all natural peanut butter
1 cup warm water

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Mix all dry ingredients together. Add in the peanut butter and slowly add in the warm water while mixing together.

3. Roll out into 1 inch balls and place on a greased cookie sheet. Cook for 25 to 30 minutes. Remove from oven and let sit for an hour to firm up.

4. Feed to your puppy as a reward, for a snack, or just to see the excited tail wag!

Weekly Drool Recipe: Lemon-Lavender Biscuits

It’s spring and that means the occasional thunderstorm.  A good spring rain can refresh the earth and feed your newly planted veggies and flowers.  But, Best Bully Sticks knows that sometimes our pups don’t like the loud booming of thunder. An anxious dog tugs at our heart stings and as proud pooch parents, we want to help calm our dog’s nerves.

That’s why this week we’re bringing you a special treat from our friends at Doggy Dessert Chef! These Lemon-Lavender Biscuits are made with culinary lavender found easily on the Internet or your local spice shop.  Lavender has a calming effect by way of a dog's olfactory system (nose) and has been proven to be a natural way to calm a dog through thunderstorms and separation anxiety.

Ingredients

1 Lemon (juiced and zested)

1 tablespoon Culinary Lavender

2 cups Whole Wheat Flour

1/2 cup Milk

Weekly Drool Recipe: Blueberry Dog Biscuits

Leave it to Martha Stewart to come up with a delicious, simple and healthy Blueberry Dog Biscuit recipe that won't leave your dog feeling blue. Sushi & Espy were so excited that we had to share the recipe with our paw pals. No worries, eating to many of these will not transform your dog into a giant blueberry like Violet in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.

Blueberries are a super-fruit for that super-dog in your life, a great source of antioxidants, good for the heart & vision, rich in Vitamin C and bursting with nutrients. The great thing is that they aren't toxic to dogs, because remember not all human foods are safe for your dog to snack on. So bakers get cracking those eggs!

Yield:

Makes about 30

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups oat flour
  • 2 1/2 cups quinoa flour
  • 3/4 cup flax meal
  • 1/2 cup frozen, organic, unsweetened blueberries
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 large egg

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with a nonstick baking mat or parchment paper; set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together all ingredients with 1 cup water to form a dough. Roll out mixture between two sheets of plastic wrap to 1/4-inch thick; remove plastic wrap and cut out biscuits with a 3 1/2-inch bone-shaped cookie cutter. Reroll scraps and continue cutting out biscuits.
  3. Space biscuits 1 inch apart on prepared baking sheet. Bake for 30 minutes until nicely browned and firm.
  4. Transfer biscuits to a wire rack. Turn off oven and place biscuits on wire rack in oven overnight. Remove from oven and store in an airtight container up to 2 weeks.

Delicious Homemade Pupcake Cupcake Dog Recipe

Crave, indulge and satisfy your dogs sweet tooth! Now this recipe is worth drooling over. Check out this delicious Pupcake (aka cupcake) dog recipe courtesy of our blogging friends at The Road Forks.

Adapted from Dan Dye & Mark Beckloff's Three Dog Bakery Cookbook: Over 50 Recipes for All-Natural Treats for Your Dog, Barkery-Fresh Carob Cakes on page 40

Time: 30 minutes
Serves: 12 dogs (or 2 hungry dogs over six days)

Ingredients

1/2 cup honey
2 cups white whole wheat flour (or white flour)
1/2 cup low-fat mayonnaise*
3 heaping tablespoons carob powder
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 1/2 cups warm water
1 teaspoon vanilla
12 small dog biscuits

Directions

1.  Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2.  In a large bowl, blend all ingredients except for dog biscuits together very thoroughly.  The mixture will be a little thick.
3.  Grease a muffin tin or use cupcake liners and fill each 2/3 full.
4.  Bake for 10 minutes or until a thin baked layer forms on top.
5.  Remove pan from oven and firmly press one dog biscuit into each cupcake.  Some batter will gush out on the sides of the dog biscuit.
6.  Place muffin tin back into oven and continue baking for 15 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean when inserted in the middle of a pupcake.
7.  Cool completely and store in the refrigerator.

* I know that mayonnaise is a weird ingredient to include in baked goods but, because it is an egg product, it binds the batter together.  If you don't want to use mayonnaise, I think you could replace that ingredient with an egg and a splash of milk.

Cool, Serve, Devour!!!

*****Sushi & Espy love frosting so if you want some frosting on that cupcake here is a simple, quick & easy frosting recipe. In a mixer combine 12 oz nonfat cream cheese, 1 teasp. vanilla, 1 teasp. honey. Add 3 teasp cinnamon or carob powder, if desired. Then frost away!
