Weekly Drool Recipe: Loaves of Lamb via Kirby the Dorkie

Traditional Easter lunch or dinner usually consists of ham or lamb. While ham is tasty, BestBullySticks knows that lamb has a lot of health benefits for you and your dog! So if your celebrating Easter with a great meal, don’t leave Fido out! Kirby the Dorkie and his mom, Debby, shared this great lamb dog meal with us for our Easter Edition of the Weekly Drool Recipe!

Lamb, which is great for the coat and skin, is a fatty, calorie dense meat often recommended for lean dogs to gain more weight so you may want to feed this meal sparingly if your dog is borderline chunky like Kirby.

The aroma wafting from the oven kept Kirby in or near the kitchen the entire time just hoping for a bite!

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground lamb
  • 1 cup cooked butternut squash*
  • 1/2 cup ricotta cheese
  • 1 cup crushed tomatoes
  • 1 red bell pepper, seeded and diced
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp sweet mint, finely chopped
  • 3 tbsp parsley, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp light olive oil

Preparation Instructions for Butternut Squash

1. Prepare squash by cutting in half lengthwise, removing seeds, and fibers. Place cut side up in ungreased baking dish. You can season sparingly with a little sea salt and real butter.

2. Pour water in dish until 1/4 inch deep. Cover with foil and bake at 375 degrees for 40 minutes or until tender. Read more

Weekly Drool Recipe: Sweet Teddy’s Strawberry Swirls

BestBullySticks.com wishes you a Happy First Day of Spring! Why not celebrate with your dog and whip up a spring inspired treat? Jen Mitchell Oddi from My Dog’s Breakfast has just the thing. She baked a yummy and beautiful treat for a friend’s whippet Edward (aka Teddy). Since Teddy has a sweet tooth but dogs can’t have much sugar, Jen created Sweet Teddy’s Strawberry Swirls! You and your dog can enjoy these fruity, coco-nutty treats together!

From Jen – My Dog’s Breakfast
Coconut is great for dogs – lots of benefits, especially in terms of their coat. I wish you could inhale the aroma of these cookies right now, it’s helping lighten up this dreary winter day. Oatmeal, strawberry, coconut, cinnamon.

So dear Edward – I hope you enjoy these scrumptious Strawberry Coconut Cookies. They’re not just for dogs, by the way, they’re actually quite tasty when soft and warm out of the oven!

Jam Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cups strawberries, chopped
  • 1 1/2 tsp cornstarch

Dough Mixture

  • 1 1/4 cup rolled oats (not instant)
  • 1 1/4 cup of whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened coconut flakes
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup canola oil
  • 1 mashed up banana
  • 1 egg

Directions

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 375.
  2. Mix together the chopped strawberries with the cornstarch in a saucepan. Over medium heat, let them cook together until it reaches a jam like consistency. It should be thick but not too chunky.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine all of the dry ingredients. In a separate bowl, lightly beat the egg, then add the canola oil, honey, and mashed banana. Add this wet mixture to the dry and mix ‘er up.
  4. Cut a large sheet of parchment paper (about the size of a baking tray). Spread the “dough” mixture onto the parchment, then spread the strawberry jam on top evenly.
  5. Now, use your parchment to roll this into a log. Start by lifting the parchment (the side nearest to you) and proceed to roll the dough away from you. After each roll over, lift the parchment off and begin another roll. This is akin to rolling sushi.
  6. Firm it up into more of a cylindrical shape, then wrap the edges and let it cool and set a bit in the fridge for half an hour.
  7. Unwrap your bundle of strawberry coconut joy and place the parchment with log on a baking tray. Gently, and with a sharp knife, cut your cookie rounds. Lay your cookies out on the parchment paper. Sprinkle a little coconut love on top of each cookie, and bake, uncovered, for 20 minutes. Let them cool and let your dog drool before giving them a Strawberry Swirl.

Weekly Drool Recipe: Coco’s Carob-Nut Dog Crisps

BestBullySticks.com we know you don’t want to deny your pooch the simple things in life that are just for fun; like cookies! Dog Pack Snacks whipped up this dog-friendly cookie recipe that will make your pooch jump for joy, wag for wonder and smile for seconds!

This recipe makes a small batch of about 20 medium sized cookies but can be easily doubled if you need to make a larger batch.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup flour – I use oat flour but feel free to use wheat if your dog tolerates wheat.
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened coconut flakes
  • 1/3 cup carob chips
  • 2 medium eggs – if your dog has issues with protein, use one egg and 1/4 cup of water instead.
  • 1/2 tablespoon of ginger
  • 1/4 tablespoon of vanilla

Directions

  1. Mix the eggs, ginger and vanilla together, then add the flour, coconut and carob chips one at a time.  Combine the ingredients into a thick sticky dough.
  2. Use a melon ball scoop to portion the dough onto your baking sheet.  Be prepared, the dough will stick to the scoop. If you want larger cookies, use a larger melon scoop.
  3. Then use your thumb to flatten the middle of the little dough balls.  Again, this is sticky!
  4. Bake at 350 degree, near the top of the oven for 25-30 mins until light brown and crisp.

Thanks to Dog Pack Snacks for sharing this great recipe and photo with us!
