Common Thanksgiving Foods Pets Need To Avoid: 101 Dog Care Tips- Tip 136

turkeyAlthough the Thanksgiving menu is chalk full of delicious bounty for humans to enjoy. The smell of roast turkey in the air makes it even more tempting to share some of your food scraps with your salivating, begging loyal dog. If your dog is like our pugs Sushi & Espy then you will probably find their hungry eyes glued to the oven door watching their favorite cooking show "All Things Turkey". Truth be told there are a few thanksgiving foods that are dangerous and potentially deadly to pets. Here is a list of foods that your pet should avoid at all cost courtesy of Dr. Bill Craig, DVM.

Bones - Many pet owners want to hand over left over bones from the turkey, ham or steak to the dog, but these small bones can become lodged in the throat, stomach, or intestinal tract or break into splinters, causing extensive damage to the stomach and gastro-intestinal tract if swallowed, even puncturing the small intestines.

Raw or undercooked turkey - may contain deadly salmonella bacteria

Dough and Cake Batter - The combination of raw bread dough and the pet's body heat can cause the dough to rise inside the stomach, resulting in vomiting, severe abdominal pain and bloating. The batter used in cakes and pies usually contains raw eggs which could contain salmonella bacteria that may lead to food poisoning.

Fat trimmings or very fatty foods - Rich, fatty foods such as turkey skin and dark turkey meat are difficult to digest and can cause vomiting and diarrhea in your dog, and in extreme cases, pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) .

** BBS Side Note: Symptoms of pancreatitis include loss of appetite, lethargy, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea and fever. If you suspect your dog has helped himself to a turkey dinner and showing signs of having these symptoms seek vet help ASAP!

Onion and Garlic - These ingredients contain sulfides, which are toxic to animals and can cause the destruction of red blood cells, especially in cats, causing Heinz body anemia.

Sage - This, as well as many other herbs, contain essential oils and resins that can cause gastrointestinal upset and central nervous system depression to pets, especially in cats.

Raisins and Grapes - They are a choking hazard to pets and ingestion of either can cause significant kidney damage.

Walnuts and Macadamia Nuts
- These can cause weakness, depression, incoordination, and tremors. In addition, the high fat levels of these nuts may cause pancreatitis in dogs, resulting severe vomiting and diarrhea.

Chocolate - Chocolate can be toxic for pets, or even fatal, due to a substance called theobromine found in chocolate.

Mushrooms - These can produce damage to a number of internal organs, including kidneys, liver, and the central nervous system. If a dog eats mushrooms, seizures, coma, vomiting, even death can occur.

Chewing Gum and Candy - Many contain Xylitol, an artificial sweetener that can cause a severe drop in blood glucose in dogs and As soon as 30 minutes after ingestion, dogs can begin to show signs of depression, loss of coordination, and seizures. Xylitol may also lead to delayed onset damage to the liver occurring days to weeks after ingestion. Xylitol toxicity in pets may be fatal and requires immediate medical attention.

Beer - Alcohol, especially the hops in beer, can be particularly harmful to dogs, causing intoxication, panting, fever, racing heart, liver damage, even coma, seizures and death.

On behalf of Sushi, Espy and the Best Bully Sticks team, have a happy and safe Thanksgiving!

Spotlight on a Rescue or Charity: We Honor The National Canine Cancer Foundation

We are dedicated to spreading awareness about pet related causes. Our “Spotlight on a Rescue or Charity“ series, pays tribute and honor animal rescue & shelters, unsung heroes across America dedicated to enriching, saving and nurturing the lives of animals in need.  We hope you will champion our cause by barking the word about the importance of pet adoption and donating your time and finances to your local animal shelter or rescue. Be a voice, email us if you know of a deserving animal rescue or charity that should be spotlighted and recognized. November marks National Pet Cancer Awareness Month. We are proud to spotlight “ The National Canine Cancer Foundation” to help bark awareness and find a cure.

The National Canine Cancer Foundation

About The National Canine Cancer Foundation

The National Canine Cancer Foundation is a nationwide, contribution funded, 501 (c)(3) non-profit corporation dedicated to eliminating Cancer as a major health issue in dogs by funding grants directly to Cancer researchers who are working to save lives, find cures, better treatments and accurate, cost effective diagnostic methods in dealing with canine Cancer.

Mission:
The purpose of the Foundation’s Research Grant Program is to encourage and provide grant support for basic, pre-clinical and clinical research in high impact and innovative cancer research, which is intended to develop innovative approaches to a cure, treatment, diagnosis or prevention of cancers in dogs. The program fosters collaboration between basic and clinical scientists with the intent of enhancing the transfer of basic research findings to clinical usefulness.

Why should you care?

Canine Cancer affects one out of every three dogs. Of those, over half of them will die of cancer. The National Canine Cancer Foundation is asking for your help to fund important research grants that are working towards improving those statistics. Through a major project funded by the National Institute of Health, the mapping of the genome sequence of the dog has been complete. Knowing the mapping of every gene in the dog, gives researchers an advantage not yet achieved in humans.

How can you help The National Canine Cancer Foundation ?

The National Canine Cancer Foundation

The National Canine Cancer Foundation thanks you for your generous donation. Your donation to their new, "We Are The Cure campaign," is intended to rally every person who loves dogs to step up the transformation of research into treatments and cures that can soon benefit all dogs fighting for the lives because of Cancer.

This campaign offers you a rare chance to participate in this decisive process. Your support means helping them pay for the development of innovative therapies. It means funding the research that will culminate in a cure for Cancer. The sense of urgency is clear, yet it comes with the hope that they are nearing their goal.

At the National Canine Cancer Foundation their drive to finding a cure, their conviction that “if we all work together, We Are The Cure, for Cancer in dog is not just words—it’s a call to action

Make a heartfelt donation of any size. You can give a charitable donation to The National Canine Cancer Foundation (NCCF).

Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed: For the Love of Basset Hounds

EFG11315Height: 12–15 inches (30–38 cm)

Weight: 50–65 pounds

Coat: short, sleek, smooth, hard and shiny

Color: Bassets are generally tricolor (black, tan, and white), open red and white (red spots on white fur), closed red and white (a solid red color with white feet and tails), Honey And White (honey colored back, light brown spotty nose and legs, light brown tails with white tip) and lemon and white. Some Bassets are also classified as a rare gray or blue.

Appearance: Basset Hounds have long, low-set ears and powerful necks, with much loose skin around their heads that forms wrinkles. Their tails are long and tapering and stand upright with a curve. The breed is also known for its hanging skin structure, which causes the face to have a permanently sad look; this, for many people, adds to the breed's charm. The loose, elastic skin around the neck and trailing ears are thought to help catch the scent of what they are tracking. Basset Hounds are a "large dog" on short legs, surprisingly they are long and can reach things on table tops that dogs of similar heights cannot.

Temperament: A mild mannered, even tempered, and laid back breed, the Basset Hound is a breed of dog that is ideal for inexperienced dog owners and those with children or other pets, as he is a sociable creature and gets along with other animals as well as kids and adults. This is a breed that is largely very peace-loving and has a very cheerful disposition. Some Basset Hounds love to act the clown and others will carry themselves with dignity and calmness. The breed tends to be calm, polite and amiable around strangers. These dogs have a great sense of humor, and make wonderful companion and family pets

These dogs have a very responsive nature, and fare well with patient training methods. The Basset Hound is an animal that will be quite happy lazing by the fire, but his tendency to put on weight means that he will need to be exercised on a regular basis. The Basset Hound can sometimes be stubborn, and beware of his love of food, as he will be quite happy to steal any food that he finds on his travels. Although training these dogs is moderately easy with the right attitude, they can be very difficult to housebreak.

Health: The Basset Hound has a life expectancy of around 10-12 years. A number of health problems and issues are associated with this breed and this includes luxating patella, PRA, ectropion, entropion, epilepsy, elbow dysplasia, spinal problems, bleeding disorders, glaucoma, vWD, thyroid problems, and ear infections.
