20 Pet Friendly People Foods Safe for Dogs : 101 Dog Care Tips- Tip 84

Being a responsible dog owner means knowing what to feed and not to feed your pooch since not all foods are good for your dog. Our friends at Moderndog Magazine has come out with a helpful list of 20 nutritious human foods that are safe for you to share with your dog. These pet friendly foods are sure to spice up your dogs meal and get that tails wagging. Remember a balanced diet & excercise is the key to good health. Chow hounds bone appetit!

1. Yogurt is a good source of available calcium and protein. When choosing yogurt, pick one that has live active bacteria and no sugars or artificial sweeteners. The active bacteria may act as probiotics. If your pooch is pudgy, make sure that you pick fat-free yogurt but not one that contains fat substitutes (e.g., Simplesse or Olestra). Frozen yogurt is a nice summer treat for dogs.

2. Flax seed (ground or oil) is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential fatty acids that are good for skin and coat. Whole flax seeds are best if ground right before feeding as this type of fat can go rancid quickly. Flax seed can also be added to your dog’s diet as a source of fibre. Flax oil is a more concentrated form of omega- 3 fatty acids without the fibre. Make sure that you store the oil or seeds in the fridge in an air tight dark container.

3. Salmon is a fatty fish which is also a good source of omega- 3 fatty acids. These fats support the immune system and can be beneficial for skin and coat health. There has also been some indication that they may benefit dogs with allergies. You can feed salmon or salmon oil. If feeding salmon, make sure it’s cooked before serving, as raw salmon can carry a parasite that can make your dog sick.

4. Pumpkin is a good source of fibre and beta carotene (a source of vitamin A). Dogs need fibre in their diet. The current trend is towards highly digestible diets that lower stool volume and this is not necessarily a good thing. Keeping the GI tract moving helps keep the cells lining the gut healthy.

5. Sweet potatoes are another source of dietary fibre and contain vitamin B6, vitamin C, beta carotene, and manganese. Sweet potatoes are great sliced and dehydrated as a chewy treat for your dog. There are so many dog treats on the market that we often overlook the simple, healthy, and reasonably priced treats available at our grocery store.

6. Green beans are a good source of plant fibre, vitamin K, vitamin C, and manganese. If your dog has a tendency to put on weight, then replacing some of her regular food with green beans is a great low calorie way to fill her up and help her maintain a healthy weight. Many dogs enjoy green beans frozen.

7. Eggs are a great source of very digestible protein, riboflavin, and selenium. For some dogs that are prone to digestive upset, eggs can give them a little protein boost. Adding eggs to your dog’s food is a healthy treat. Make sure to use cooked whole egg, as raw egg whites can cause biotin deficiency. If you do a lot of training with your dog, consider taking cooked eggs to your next class as training treats.

8. Brewer’s yeast is the yeast that’s left over from making alcohol. Dogs seem to really enjoy the tangy taste of brewer’s yeast. It’s full of B vitamins which are good for skin, coat, and carbohydrate metabolism. Make sure you’re using brewer’s yeast (available at health food stores), not baking yeast which will make your dog sick. Brewer’s yeast can spice up your dog’s appetite. Just sprinkle a little on the food of a picky eater and watch her dive into her food.

9. Apples are wonderful crunchy treats for your dog. Apples with the skin on are full of plant chemicals (phytonutrients) that are thought to be protective against some types of cancer in humans. They are a source of vitamins A and C and fibre. Apple seeds, however, contain cyanide so your dog should not be allowed to eat the core. Though the effects of a few apple seeds will likely not harm your dog, the deleterious effects can accumulate over time if allowed to eat apple seeds regularly.

10. Oatmeal is a good source of soluble fibre. This can be beneficial for some older dogs that may have trouble maintaining bowel regularity. Oatmeal is also an alternative source of grain for dogs that are allergic to wheat. It can be fed in conjunction with probiotics to enhance their function. Keep in mind oatmeal should always be fed cooked and plain with no sugar or flavouring. As always, check with your veterinarian before making any major changes to your dog’s diet, especially if they are on any medications. Upsetting the vitamin and mineral balances in your dog’s diet can have negative effects on your dog’s health and some medications interact badly with some nutrients. The aim of most dog owners is to give their dogs the best diet possible. Good nutrition coupled with a health care program may result in extending your dog’s life by as much as 15 percent. The suggestions above are not meant to replace your dog’s normal, balanced diet. Rather, they are ideas for alternative treats or for adding a little variety to your dog’s meals.

11. Rice is good to feed when your dog has an upset tummy and needs a bland meal. There are a variety of different types of rice. Brown rice is a little higher in protein and a little lower in fat when compared to white rice. White or instant rice is an easily digestible carbohydrate which makes it a good source of energy when your dog has an upset tummy or if you are feeding an older dog.

12. Squash, like pumpkin, can be added to bulk up his stool and is a good source of betacarotene (provitamin A). Hint: remove the seeds and then slice and freeze the squash to make it a fun, crunchy snack for your dog.

13. Popcorn that has been air popped with no butter or salt is a great lowcalorie treat for your dog. Popcorn contains potassium as well as the bone-building minerals phosphorous, magnesium, and calcium. So snuggle up and share that popcorn with your furry friend next time you watch a movie.

14. Lean meat (chicken, beef, or pork) with no visible fat and no added sauces or seasonings can be a great training treat or can add a bit of good-quality extra protein to your dog’s diet. Lean meat is an excellent, balanced source of amino acids, the building blocks of muscle in your dog’s body. Meat is also a great source of B vitamins (Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic acid, Pyridoxine, and Cobalamine). These vitamins are involved in energy metabolism in the body.

15. Liver is available freeze-dried in most pet stores and it is a great training treat. You can also buy it fresh in the grocery store to feed at home. Fresh liver can be cooked and then baked to make your own liver treats. Liver is an excellent source of B vitamins (Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic acid, and Folic acid), Vitamin A, and Vitamin K. It is also a great source of iron. Warning: Too much liver may be toxic to dogs because of its high vitamin A content. Therefore, it is best to limit the amount of liver fed to your dog to not more than 1 g of fresh liver/Kg body weight per day.

16. Pineapple can be a special treat for your dog. Pineapple contains mostly sugar but it also contains calcium and potassium. Frozen pineapple can be a fun summer treat for your dog.

17. Cottage cheese is high in protein and calcium and it’s fairly bland, so it can be a good way to add some extra protein to your dog’s diet. Cottage cheese is a dairy product and some dogs don’t do well with dairy, so make sure you start with just a small amount.

18. Parsley has long been thought to improve doggie breath, so next time you are baking treats for your dog, try adding a few tablespoons of chopped parsley for added flavour and colour. Parsley can also be a good source of calcium, potassium, and beta-carotene.

19. Peanut butter is a healthy, high-protein treat for dogs. Try smearing some inside or on one of your dog’s toys, or let him lick out the container when it’s almost finished.

20. Peas can be added right to your dog’s food, frozen or thawed. Peas are a good source of the B vitamin Thiamin, phosphorous, and potassium.

Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed: Congrats Oliver the Lowchen

    Ollie practicing his agility jumps.

    Ollie practicing his agility jumps.

We always love getting emails asking us to feature their dog  or favorite breed for our Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed blog series. As always we are honored to oblige. Thanks Mari for submitting your Lowchen boy Oliver Wolfgang Rock Me Amadeus (aka Ollie) to be featured.  We can see why he is the love of your life. Oliver thanks for being a huge tail wagging fan of our bully sticks. Happy chewing!!

    Height: 12-14 inches

    Weight: 8-18 lbs

Coat: Löwchen coat is long, thick, and soft with a wave. The Lowchen has a soft and silky coat texture. It is typically trimmed to resemble a lion. Their back end is sheared to the skin, and a tuft of hair is left on the end of the tail. The ears are left long and fringed. If the coat is not trimmed into the lion cut the fur is long and wavy; never curly.

Color: The coloring of the Löwchen can vary, and includes black and tan, chocolate and tan, cream, gold, white, black, and various other colors and combinations.

Appearance: The Löwchen is a small, sturdy, and compact dog that is almost square in shape with an appearance that has earned him the nickname of Little Lion Dog.  It is strong with a short, broad skull. It holds itself proudly, and its gait is uplifting and effortless. The breed’s ears are pendent-shaped and feathered, and its intelligence is evident in its eyes. Its coat is long, thick, and soft with a wave. The traditional cut that gives the Löwchen the name of Little Lion is clipped close on its hindquarters and the lower half of its tail. Additionally, the front legs are close-clipped, and the main is left long and natural to give the appearance of a lion

Temperament: The Löwchen is a friendly, happy dog. Dogs of this breed are both active and playful, and very intelligent. The Löwchen makes a good pet for families with children and an excellent house pet. Known as the Little Lion Dog, the Lowchen is a dog with bags of character, plenty of spirit, and a lively and cheerful personality. These energetic little dogs make good family pets and companions, and are well suited to the inexperienced dog owner as well as the more experienced. This intelligent breed is quick to learn and eager to please, which makes training relatively easy. The Lowchen is a dog that is entertaining and fun to be around, but is also dignified, sensible, and peaceful. He thrives on the attention of his family, and has plenty of love and affection to shower upon his owners. Although the Lowchen loves to play and join in with all the family fun, he will also be content to simply snuggle up and relax with you.

Lowchens are very agile, athletic dog.

Lowchens are very agile, athletic dog.

These mild mannered dogs can sometimes lean towards timidity, and this means that early socialization is important in order to promote confidence and improve social skills. A well socialized Lowchen will get along well with children, providing that they are gentle and considerate, and will also get along well with other pets. With strangers many will be friendly and polite, although some may be timid or shy. Although the Lowchen is suitable for apartment living, he may be a keen barker and this could pose a problem in terms of noise. His tendency to announce visitors and raise the alarm makes him an effective watchdog. This is not a dog for those that have little time to devote to a pet, as he does need attention, love, and mental stimulation. His exercise requirements are low, although you should ensure that he has a safe and secured place to play or take him out for walks regularly.

Health: The life expectancy of the Lowchen is around 13-16 years, and there are just a few health issues that are linked to this generally hardy, healthy breed. This includes PRA, cataract, luxating patella, and possible allergies.

Reasons to Adopt a Shelter Pet: 101 Dog Care Tips- Tip 61

Pet-AdoptionAnimal shelters and humane societies are overrun with abandoned pets looking for loving homes. The real tragedy is that thousands of these animals end up being euthanized rather than adopted. Sadly, shelter animals are often thought of as "sloppy seconds" or "someone else's problem." On the contrary, a rescued dog or cat can be a great alternative to purchasing a pet from a breeder. Lets be the solution to the problem of overcrowded rescue, shelters and pet homelessness. Adopting a pet from a shelter can be one of the most rewarding things you can do. The benefits are numerous.

    1. Save 2 Lives & Enrich Your Own. According to The Humane Society of the United States sadly about 4 million dogs and cats are put to sleep each year because of overcrowded animal shelters. Pets who don't get adopted within a set time frame from a shelter are often euthanized due to shelter overcrowding & lack of supplies. Adopting a shelter pet means you are saving two lives. You are not only helping a deserving pet in need gain a home, but now there is shelter room for another animal in need to lay his or her head.

    2. Clean Bill of Health. Pets up for adoption at reputable animal shelters will be healthy. Most have trained specialists on hand to examine the animals when they arrive and make sure they are vetted and fit for adoption. Those that are sickly get treated and cared for quickly. Shelters also normally give the animals proper shots and spay and neuter them. Fact or Fiction? Shelter pets have behavioral problems,  are damaged,  and sickly...Fiction. According to the Humane Society, most pets are handed over to shelters for "people reasons," such as financial constraints, a move or a divorce.
    3. Save Money. The cost of adopting a pet varies widely depending on the shelter always less expensive than buying an animal at a pet store or from a breeder. Shots, vaccines, and spay or neuter fees for your shelter pet are typically rolled into the shelter's adoption fee and are much less expensive than if you went to a private vet. Some shelters may even spay and neuter the pets for for free. Some humane societies and shelters offer training classes and behavioral counseling for pets in their care. Also, keep in mind some pets were previously owned and cared for and therefore may have already been trained by their previous owners. Adopting a pre-trained pet from a humane society or animal shelter saves a lot of time and money when you consider the price for obedience school and pet-training services.
    4. Don't Support Puppy Mills. A puppy mill is a breeder who breeds dogs for maximum profit with little regard for the animal, they are looking to make money off helpless animals. Many of these breeders do not properly care for the puppies or their parents and house them in bad conditions. The dogs may have poor medical care. If you want a certain dog breed, check first with local animal shelters. According to AdoptAPet.com, about 30 percent of shelter dogs are purebred. Putting your heart and your money toward adopting a shelter animal can reduce a cruel industry's supply and demand.
    5. Feel Good Feeling is Priceless. Get that heartwarming feeling of knowing you saved not just one but two lives. The pet you adopt will leave an open space for the shelter to take in another needy animal. Your rescued pet will also provide you with undying love and your life will be greatly enriched with companionship. Everybody wins. Pets can improve a person's well-being in many ways, from providing a sense of purpose to even lowering blood pressure.
    6. Large Selection of Animals to Choose From. The Humane Society recommends adopting from rescue groups and animal shelters because they offer new owners a great selection. The selection changes daily with new animals coming in, so families can take their time and wait for the perfect pet that meets everyone's expectations. If you've decided against adoption because you've got your heart set on a purebred pet, think again. While 70 to 75 percent of pets in animal shelters are mixed breeds, 25 to 30 percent of pets at a shelter are pure bred. You can also contact a breed rescue organizations that specialize in specific breeds of cats and dogs. These organizations allow people to adopt pets that they have rescued. Animal shelters usually screen the temperaments of the pets so that families have some idea of the animal's personality and background before buying it, which helps in deciding which pet would be best fit for their family.
