Weekly Drool Recipe: Fresh Breath Dog Treats

BestBullySticks knows spring cleaning doesn’t just refer to your house—how about your dog’s mouth? Our sweet doggies don’t always have the sweetest of breath, so give them this yummy treat full of great ingredients and breath freshening qualities.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/4 cups whole-wheat flour
  • 1 1/4 cups cornmeal
  • 1 1/4 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup toasted wheat germ
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/2 sticks (3/4 cup) cold unsalted butter, cut into tablespoon pieces
  • 1 cup plus 1 tablespoon water
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh mint leaves
  • 1 large egg
Directions

1. Pulse flours, cornmeal, oats, wheat germ, brown sugar, baking powder, and salt in a food processor until combined. Add butter and pulse until mixture resembles coarse meal with pea-size butter lumps. Add 1 cup water and pulse until a coarse, dense dough forms.

2. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead in parsley and mint until well distributed. Gather, then halve dough with scraper. Form into 2 balls and flatten each into a 6-inch disk.

3. Put oven racks in upper and lower thirds of oven and preheat oven to 350°F. Grease 2 large baking sheets.

4. Roll out 1 disk of dough into a round (1/3 inch thick) on a well-floured surface with a well-floured rolling pin. (If dough becomes too soft to roll out, wrap in plastic and chill until firm.) Cut out as many biscuits as possible and arrange about 1/4 inch apart on 1 baking sheet.

5. Gather scraps and reroll, then cut out more biscuits. Repeat with remaining dough, using other baking sheet.

6. Whisk together egg and 1 tablespoon water. Brush biscuits with egg wash and bake, switching position of sheets halfway through, until tops are golden brown, about 35 minutes total. Turn off oven and dry biscuits in oven overnight.

Enjoy & Bone Appetit!

Weekly Drool Recipe: Loaves of Lamb via Kirby the Dorkie

Traditional Easter lunch or dinner usually consists of ham or lamb. While ham is tasty, BestBullySticks knows that lamb has a lot of health benefits for you and your dog! So if your celebrating Easter with a great meal, don’t leave Fido out! Kirby the Dorkie and his mom, Debby, shared this great lamb dog meal with us for our Easter Edition of the Weekly Drool Recipe!

Lamb, which is great for the coat and skin, is a fatty, calorie dense meat often recommended for lean dogs to gain more weight so you may want to feed this meal sparingly if your dog is borderline chunky like Kirby.

The aroma wafting from the oven kept Kirby in or near the kitchen the entire time just hoping for a bite!

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground lamb
  • 1 cup cooked butternut squash*
  • 1/2 cup ricotta cheese
  • 1 cup crushed tomatoes
  • 1 red bell pepper, seeded and diced
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp sweet mint, finely chopped
  • 3 tbsp parsley, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp light olive oil

Preparation Instructions for Butternut Squash

1. Prepare squash by cutting in half lengthwise, removing seeds, and fibers. Place cut side up in ungreased baking dish. You can season sparingly with a little sea salt and real butter.

2. Pour water in dish until 1/4 inch deep. Cover with foil and bake at 375 degrees for 40 minutes or until tender. Read more

Well, these Blueberry Pumpkin Dog Treats from Matthew at Vegan Heartland will do just that for your pup! Read on to learn about Matthew’s Yellow Lab, Keeva and her favorite treat.

Keeva has been on a mostly homemade vegan diet for almost a year now and she's doing amazing! She does eat kibble every now and then and she absolutely loves it!

I know there's one thing I can count on though and that would be these treats! Keeva absolutely loves these! Not only does she love to snack on them but they're super nutritious for her! She get's the antioxidants from the blueberries and pumpkin + the omega-3 fatty acids and lignans from the flax seed meal. I think when I make these next time I'm going to add some sesame seed meal and molasses to add a little boost of calcium to her diet. They're super easy to make and you can cut them out into any shape you like!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup applesauce
  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
  • 2 cups 100% whole wheat flour (you could try using oat or brown rice flour for wheat free treats!)
  • 1/2 cup flax seed meal
  • 1/3 cup blueberries
  • 1/3 cup water

1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.

2. Blend together the applesauce and pumpkin. Once the applesauce and pumpkin are well combined, stir in the flour and flax seed meal. Add in enough water until dough just becomes workable.
