Weekly Drool Recipe: Beggin’ For Bacon Dog Biscuits via Food Baby

Belly rubs. Your pillow. Every tennis ball. Every stick. Long naps. Car rides. The list of things dogs love goes on and on. BestBullySticks.com knows one of the most endearing things about dogs is the equal level of contentment or excitement dogs exhibit about each of these. But there might be one thing your dog gets more excited about than anything else: Bacon. It’s odd just how connected the two seem, but really, what’s not to love? Kara at Food Baby Blog shared her bacon biscuit recipe she whipped up for her picky eater, Rocky, that your dog is sure to love as well! Read on for Beggin’ For Bacon Dog Biscuits recipe!

Ingredients

  • ½ c rolled oats
  • ½ c crumbled cooked bacon (~5 slices)
  • 1 T bacon fat
  • ¾ c hot water
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 c cornmeal
  • ~1 1/2 c (whole wheat) flour

Directions
1. Mix the oats, bacon, and fat in a large bowl and then pour on the hot water. Stir the mixture until most of the water is absorbed and the fat is evenly distributed.

2. Next, whisk in the egg and cornmeal. Then begin adding the flour, about a half cup at a time, until a firm dough forms.

3. Scoop the dough into balls with a large tablespoon* and place each ball on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Using your fingers, flatten each ball into a biscuit shape. The biscuits won’t spread or rise in the baking, so whatever shape you press them into is the shape you’ll get.

4. Bake the biscuits in a 325 degree oven for about 20 minutes, until the biscuits are firm, but with a bit of give in the center. When they are completely cool, serve.

Recipe Notes
The size varies depending on the size of your dog’s mouth. These biscuits can get stuck to the roof of a dog’s mouth, so either make the biscuit size accordingly or break them up before giving them to your dog.

These biscuits are designed to be softer than typical dog treats so that older dogs, with their more sensitive teeth, can fully enjoy them. But that doesn’t mean this is old people dog food.

On the contrary. With big chunks of real bacon and enough bacon fat to flavor the whole thing, this will be a biscuit that any pooch will love. (They’ll also love you if you put the leftover bacon fat on their kibble, which is what I did.) And, you can feel good because unlike store-bought dog treats — which are often made with byproducts, “artificial flavors,” and pig skin — these are made with real, whole foods.

Because if your dog is as much a part of your family as mine is, then you know they deserve healthy food, too.

Thanks to Kara at Food Baby Blog for sharing her wonderful recipe and photos!

Weekly Drool Recipe: Soft & Chewy Oatmeal Dog Treats from Bubby & Bean

When we say our final goodbye to a dear friend, it’s heartbreaking. And though time heals all wounds, BestBullySticks.com knows that you would never want to forget them. Such is the story with many dog lovers, including sisters Melissa & Morgan, the brains behind Bubby & Bean blog. Melissa’s dog, Leary (nicknamed Bubby) passed away a few days before Christmas last year. To remember their sweet Leary, Melissa’s sister Morgan whipped up this recipe in remembrance of him.

Everybody who met that special doggie instantly got a smile on their faces.  He was one of those friends that was always there for you and loved to snuggle.  And like most dogs, Leary LOVED food!  He knew he wasn’t supposed to beg for it, so when we would eat in front of him, he’d stand sideways and look at you out of the corner of his eye.  It cracked me up!  I was always a sucker for one particular look he'd give that made him look like a big soft puppy.  When he gave that look, a french fry or piece of cheese would “accidentally” make its way into his mouth.   He knew exactly how to work his auntie!  And that boy sure did love his cheese.  I even wrote the "For Leary" message in the picture at the top of this post in shredded cheddar, his favorite.

So in honor of Bubby, today I'm going to be showing you how to make a tasty doggie treat that I know he would have loved, and that your best furry friends will gobble up too.  I started making these when my husband and I noticed that our furry little girl Isis (aka the "Bean" in the Bubby and Bean!) had trouble eating hard treats.  They are soft so they’re great for older doggies, or for dogs who prefer softer foods.

This recipe is especially for you, Leary (bubby, bo-bos, roy boy, beezy, licious, and all the other nicknames that were made for you!).   I miss you every day.

Ingredients
1/2 cup – 3/4 cups oatmeal (depending on how dense you want the treats)
1/4 cup powdered milk
2 small jars beef baby food
1 tablespoon peanut butter (either crunchy or smooth works great)

Recipe Note: You can also use Cream of Wheat or wheat germ in place of the oatmeal.

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Combine all ingredients in a medium sized bowl.

3. Shape dough into hearts, bones, or any other doggie themed treat.

4. Place treats on greased cookie sheet or use a silicone baking mat.

5. Cook for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown.

6. Cool.  Store treats in your refrigerator for up to one week (or until your furry kid learns how to open the fridge!).

Thanks to Melissa & Morgan at Bubby & Bean for sharing Bubby’s story, this recipe and photos.

Bone Appétit & Enjoy!
