Weekly Drool Recipe: Shiny Coat Dog Treats

Shiny Coat Dog TreatsA healthy dog is a beautiful dog! As dogs age their skin and coat can become dry and brittle. One way to add moisture and shine to your dogs coat is flax-seed and oils, which serve as a great source of omega 3 fatty acids, fiber and anti-oxidants. Fatty acids, an essential ingredient to any pets diet, help to improve the texture of his coat, making for fuller, shinier hair. Healthy skin and a healthy coat are not only beautiful to look at and to pet, but also give a good indication of your dog’s internal health.

Often time a dull coat can be a sign of other skin deep health problems like a weakened immune system. Flax-seed not only makes the coat shiny, it has positive benefits on the overall health and well being of your dog. By adding Flax-seed to your dog's diet you can improve your dogs immune system and cardiovascular health. As well as prevent and treat inflammatory disease (arthritis), heart disease, cancer, allergies and coat issues. Here is a recipe that will ensure your dog has a healthy shiny coat. This Shiny Coat Dog Treat Recipe is not only healthy for your dog but taste good!

Ingredients

1 cup organic whole wheat flour (substitute with gluten free option such as rice flour or buckwheat)

1/4 teaspoon of salt

4 1/2 tablespoons flaxseed meal (substitute with salmon oil and cod liver oil)

1 organic egg

1 tablespoon of local honey

1/3 cup of organic beef or chicken stock

Preparation

Preheat oven to 400°F. Grease a baking sheet with butter or a little oil.

In a bowl, mix together the flour, salt, and flaxseed meal. In another bowl combine the egg and honey.

Stir the flour mixture into the egg mixture and add stock until the dough has the consistency of drop biscuits.

Drop heaping tablespoons of the dough onto the baking sheet, leaving about 1 inch between the biscuits.

Bake for about 15 minutes. Remove, cool on a wire rack, and store, tightly covered, in a glass or ceramic container for up to a week or in the freezer for up to three months.

Spotlight on a Rescue or Charity: We Salute Guide Dogs of America

We are dedicated to spreading awareness about pet related causes such as pet adoption. So we are excited to announce our new Tuesday blog series “Spotlight on a Rescue or Charity”, to pay tribute and honor animal rescue, shelters and charities. These are our unsung heroes across America dedicated to enriching, saving and nurturing the lives of animals in need.  We hope you will champion our cause by barking the word about the importance of pet adoption and donating your time and finances to your local animal shelter or rescue. Be a voice, email us if you know of a deserving animal rescue or charity that should be spotlighted and recognized. With that said, we are proud to spotlight “Guide Dogs of America". Thanks for guiding with love and for providing guide dogs for people from all walks of life!

About Guide Dogs of America

Guide Dogs of AmericaGuide Dogs of America is dedicated to its mission to provide guide dogs and instruction in their use, free of charge, to blind and visually impaired men and women from the United States and Canada so that they may continue to pursue their goals with increased mobility and independence. Guide Dogs of America provide the blind and visually impaired with independence, companionship, confidence and freedom.

History

Guide Dogs of America was founded over 60 years ago by Joseph Jones, Sr. (a retired member of the IAMAW) with the help of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW or IAM)

When Mr. Jones became blind, he considered all his options and decided his mobility needs would best be met by using a guide dog. He applied to all the existing schools, but he was declined because of his “advanced age”. He was only 57 years old.

Mr. Jones was a determined man and “no” was not a word in his vocabulary. He turned to the IAM for help, soliciting assistance from the IAM’s Executive Council. The IAM Executive council conducted extensive research, determined there was a growing need for guide dog services, and therefore endorsed the founding of International Guiding Eyes (IGE) In 1948. The IAMAW continues to be a generous supporter and staunch advocate of the school’s mission today.

IGE was one of the first guide dog schools to be founded by a blind individual. It was also one of the first schools to adopt a policy of no upper age discrimination.

In 1992, International Guiding Eyes changed their “doing-business-as” name to Guide Dogs of America in an effort to communicate more clearly the services provided by the organization. Now the organization operates under the name Guide Dogs of America as an International Guiding Eyes Program. Today Guide Dogs of America seeks new and better ways of helping the blind community.

How Can You Help Guide Dogs of America?

Your contribution of time and/or money helps them provide guide dogs free of charge to blind individuals. With the gift of a guide dog, these men and women are better able to pursue their goals, fulfill their dreams, and participate in their communities. Guide dogs not only provide the gift of increased independence, confidence, and mobility, but they also act as a trusted companion providing new opportunities for social interaction. Help make a difference in the life of a blind individual in the form of a loving, four pawed partner today.

Why Give? Guide Dogs of America is a nonprofit organization that is supported by the generosity of individuals, foundations, corporations, and other organizations in their mission to provide loyal and loving guide dogs free of charge to blind and visually impaired individuals.

With nearly 80% of all the funds they receive going directly to program services, you know your money is well spent. They do not receive any funding from local, state or federal government.

The cost to provide one guide dog and match it with its new blind partner is $42,000.00. Your gifts help them fulfill their mission and reflect your own personal desire to help others live more independently with the loving partnership of a guide dog.

What Does Your Gift Help Provide? Every gift, no matter the amount, is greatly appreciated and helps them continue their important services to the blind community.

What Are Ways To Give? There are many ways to help Guide Dogs of America provide these extraordinary guide dogs to blind individuals who wish to live more independently. Here are some ways you can give and help their cause! You can provide a monetary donation or volunteer!

Be a voice! Support Guide Dog of America  by “Liking” their Facebook page or follow them on Twitter. Bark the word about their cause, help save and enrich the lives of our paw pals, the blind and visually impaired!

How To Teach Your Dog To Play Fetch: 101 Dog Care Tips- Tip 120

How To Teach Your Dog To Play FetchYour dog does not have to be a Golden Retriever to love a good game of fetch.  Fetch is a great form of exercise and helps promote bonding with man's best friend. But before you partake in an energetic game of fetch you must first teach your dog how to play. It is true that some dogs learn faster then others, while others have mastered the art of the ball chase but not the retrieval. The key to a good game of fetch is not only teaching your dog to run after the ball, but how to bring it back. Like any dog training we do recommend teaching your dog how to fetch at a younger age. If your older dog has not mastered the art of fetch no worries you can still teach an old dog new tricks!

1. Give the dog the ball to smell. Let the dog hold the ball in its mouth, sniff it and bat it around. This helps the dog grow comfortable with the ball.

2. Bounce the ball in front of the dog while speaking to it in an excited tone. This grabs the dog's interest.
3. Toss the ball between 2 and 3 feet away from the dog. If the dog runs after it, tell it "Good dog" in a positive sounding voice. Continue tossing the ball and encouraging the dog to chase it. Do not give it a treat each time, but continue to praise it.

4. Snap your fingers, say the dog's name or do whatever you do to make it come to you once it reaches the ball. If the dog picks up the ball and brings it to you, say "Fetch" or "Bring it here." Once the dog arrives, praise it and give it a treat. Repeat throwing the ball and telling the dog to "Fetch" it. Use the same phrase each time.

5. Tell the dog "Drop" once it masters bringing you the ball. Use a treat to encourage the dog to open its mouth. Praise the dog when it drops the ball.

Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed: We Honor the Samoyed

SamoyedWe always love getting emails from our customers & readers asking us to feature their dog or favorite breed for our Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed blog series every Thursday. As always we are honored to oblige. We are excited to spotlight the Samoyed.

Height: Male: 45-65; Female: 35-50 lbs

Weight: Male: 21-23.5; Female: 19-21 inches

Coat: The Samoyed has a long and thick double coat and requires a lot of grooming. The outercoat should be harsher than the undercoat, but still fairly soft. Undercoat should be short, thick, and should have wool like texture.

Color: The extra-thick double coat may be white, cream, white and biscuit,  or all biscuit in color.

Appearance: The Samoyed is a strong, alert, agile Arctic dog who carries himself with poise, dignity and grace. The broad head is wedge-shaped and forms an equilateral triangle on lines between the inner base of the ears and the central point of the stop. The muzzle is neither too wide nor too thin and tapers toward the nose. The lips are black and curve upward, giving the appearance of an ever-present smile. The nose should be black, but liver, brown or “Dudley” colored noses are not penalized in the show ring. The erect ears are triangular in shape and rounded at the tip. Built to withstand hard work in harsh weather, the body should be muscular and the chest should be deep. The feet are large and covered in thick hair to protect against the elements. The tail is long and curls over the back.

Temperament: This is a very peaceful breed that tends to be very active. Very loyal, the Samoyed usually favors his master but will be friendly to most people. A very sociable breed, he is not only beautiful but makes a wonderful companion. Samoyeds are perky, dependable playmates, often wearing "smiles" on their faces. They are full of fun, and love nothing more than an afternoon of frisky activity in the snow. They are active and alert, indoors and out.

Samoyeds are lively, happy dogs who adore people and often have a mischievous sense of humor. They are excellent with children and always have time for a romp in the yard, especially in the snow. Samoyeds will bark to announce a visitor, but they are not guard dogs as once they are done announcing the newcomer, will most likely cozy up to the visitor to solicit a rub down. Samoyeds are great family dogs, though they tend to favor one person above all others – usually the person who is in charge of feeding and exercise. They are excellent companions for people who like the outdoors. Samoyeds are always up for a good hike in the woods, and will be happy to keep you warm overnight on a camping trip. They can be difficult to train, but Sammies are generally well behaved and make a great choice for fist time dog owners.

Health: The average life span of the Samoyed is 12-15 years. Here are some breed-specific hereditary diseases to be aware of:

  • Diabetes mellitus similar but not identical to human Type I (insulin deficiency): The disease occurs in middle-aged Samoyeds, the mean age at diagnosis is seven years. The cause is a chronic inflammation of the pancreas and / or autoimmune destruction of beta cells of islets of Langerhans. Moreover, in affected dogs auto antibodies were found to insulin.
  • Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA). The disease leads to a slowly progressive loss of vision, which eventually leads to blindness. The first symptoms appear between two and five years of age.
  • Short legs in conjunction with eye abnormalities.
  • Pulmonary stenosis occurs more frequently in Samoyeds. The disease can cause shortness of breath, cardiac arrhythmias and tiring on motion and increases the risk of congestive heart failure
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Eye problems such as cataracts and glaucoma and other retinal problems
  • The breed can also be affected by Sebaceous adenitis, an uncommon idiopathic autoimmune skin disease.
