Dogs are not immune to matters of the heart. Just like humans dogs can experience heart difficulties or canine congestive heart failure. Canine congestive heart failure may be due to birth defects, age degeneration of the heart valves, heart worms and diseases of the heart. Before you can seek proper vet treatment, pet owners must be aware of the signs and symptoms of heart failure. Knowing the symptoms could mean the difference between life or death.

1. Excessive panting. We all know that dog's pant as a way to regulate their body temperature, since they do not have sweat glands like we do. However, if your dog is constantly panting this could be cause for concern. Your dog may be having a build up fluid in the lungs because the heart is not circulating blood properly, which can cause trouble with the circulation of body fluids, hence the fluid buildup in the lungs.

2. Cough that won't go away. If your dog is coughing incessantly but their is no evidence of a airway blockage this could be a sign of fluid buildup in the lungs.

3. Difficulty breathing. If your dog is having a hard time catching his breath or breathing then heart failure could be the issue, causing poor circulation. Inadequate circulation will affect the lungs ability to function and receive oxygen, preventing the lungs from contracting and expanding, leading to difficulty in breathing.

4. Loss of Appetite. If your dog is known for having quite a hearty appetite but is just not interested in eating then they could be suffering from heart failure. You, see dog's experiencing heart failure often become fatigue and loss interest in food.

5. Fatigue. Dog not up to his old tricks, and has no energy for a good game of fetch or chase the squirrel? Well, there could be a more underlining problem beside boredom. If your dog's circulation becomes impaired because their heart is no longer pumping blood effectively through the arteries then this is where the problem lies. Poor circulation means the muscles are not being properly supplied with enough oxygen. As a result of the onset of heart failure your dog may become fatigued & tired.

I have an update on Montana.... She competed recently at the Cincinnatti, OH Pet Expo for an UAD event.  She competed for the first time in a game called Fetch It and ended up doing great!  She was able to pull the bumper down at 17 feet out.  She just came shy of pulling the 18 feet mark off.  She also competed in Ultimate Air waves and Catch It for the event.  She qualified for Senior Ultimate Air Finals and placed 5th overall for the Division.  Our next stop will be in June at Dogs Days Bar & Grill in Osage Beach, MO.

Height: Males: 18 - 20"″ ; Females: 17– 19″.

Weight: Male: 50– 70 lbs.; Female: 45 – 65 lbs.

Coat: Chow Chow breed has a very dense double coat that is either smooth or rough (course). The fur is particularly thick around the neck, giving the distinctive ruff or mane appearance. The coarse-coated Chow Chow has a wooly, dense undercoat and a straight, extended outer-coat that forms a teeming ruff encircling the head and neck. The smooth-coated Chow Chow lacks the off-standing outer-coat but is otherwise identical.

Color: Chow Chow coat is either red, black, blue, cinnamon/fawn, and cream. 

Appearance:

The Chow is a sturdily built dog that is square in profile with broad skull and small, triangular, erect ears that are rounded at the tip. The breed has a very dense double coat that is either smooth or rough. The fur is particularly thick around the neck, giving the distinctive ruff or mane appearance. The coat may be one of five colors including red, black, blue, cinnamon/fawn, and cream.

Their eyes should be deep set and almond in shape. Chows are distinguished by their unusual blue-black/purple tongue and very straight hind legs, resulting in a rather stilted gait. The bluish color extends to the Chow's lips, which is the only dog breed with this distinctive bluish appearance in its lips and oral cavity (other dogs have black or a piebald pattern skin in their mouths). One other distinctive feature is their curly tail. It has thick hair and lays curled on its back. Their nose should be black (except the blue which can have a solid blue or slate colored nose).

Temperament: Described by some as lordly, the chow-chow is an intelligent dog that is not overly demonstrative. It is independent and can be somewhat stubborn. However, it is a devoted dog that is protective and devoted to its family despite its reserved nature. It is generally suspicious of strangers, and it has been known to be aggressive with other dogs. If socialized with children and other pets at an early age, the chow-chow will generally get along as an adult. Firm and consistent training from an early age is essential. While intelligent, the chow-chow is sometimes a challenge to obedience train due to its stubbornness. This breed has been known to guard its things, such as food, bones, toys, and areas of the house. Some do not like to walk on leashes. While not as affectionate as other breeds, the chow-chow can make a loyal family pet with the right training.

Health: The average lifespan of this breed is between 10-15 years. The Chow Chow is the dog breed most affected by elbow dysplasia. It is also prone to hip dysplasia, patellar luxation (slipping knee caps), thyroid disease, pemphigus foliaceus and ocular disorders such as entropion and ectropion

Do you currently have a dog or cat but dying to add an extra edition to your furry fun,  loving pack? Just keep in mind that even though you might be excited about the idea of a new family member your current dog may not initially wag with joyous approval. When your dog has gotten used to being the only fur kid in the house who could blame him. With your current dog being the center of attention it can be difficult to introduce a new one to the mix. Before you expect your resident dog to take out the welcome mat a proper introduction is in order so there is a smooth transition for everyone.  Remember in the canine world hierarchy is everything, so your current dog may easily feel threatened by the newbie or left out in the cold. But don't let this discourage you from opening your heart and home to a furry pet in need. Here are some simple tips to make the meet and greet ( or in this case the meet and sniff) a positive, successful and stress free one for all parties involved.

1. Before bringing home a new pet make sure current dog is well-trained and under your control. If not, it will be that much harder to acclimate your dog to a new presence in the home.

2. When first bringing home a new puppy or kitten, it is best to keep the two in separate rooms so cat fights or quarrels do not occur.

3. Have a dog crate can be useful in gaining control over the situation.

4. Let new dog familiarize itself with other pets scent. One trick is to allow new pet to spend time in your dog's crate before moving it to a separate room.

5. After about a week,  start introducing your dog to the new pet, but be sure to keep it on a leash with the crate nearby in case any sign of aggression is detected.

6. Supervision is key! If both pets are in the same room it is important to parental supervision. The hope is that after a few weeks of getting to know each other that they will be able to co-exist. Until you feel absolutely confident that they will play nice and you can leave them home alone together, supervision or separating them until you arrive back home from your errands is advised.
