Color: Bassets are generally tricolor (black, tan, and white), open red and white (red spots on white fur), closed red and white (a solid red color with white feet and tails), Honey And White (honey colored back, light brown spotty nose and legs, light brown tails with white tip) and lemon and white. Some Bassets are also classified as a rare gray or blue.

Appearance: Basset Hounds have long, low-set ears and powerful necks, with much loose skin around their heads that forms wrinkles. Their tails are long and tapering and stand upright with a curve. The breed is also known for its hanging skin structure, which causes the face to have a permanently sad look; this, for many people, adds to the breed's charm. The loose, elastic skin around the neck and trailing ears are thought to help catch the scent of what they are tracking. Basset Hounds are a "large dog" on short legs, surprisingly they are long and can reach things on table tops that dogs of similar heights cannot.

Temperament: A mild mannered, even tempered, and laid back breed, the Basset Hound is a breed of dog that is ideal for inexperienced dog owners and those with children or other pets, as he is a sociable creature and gets along with other animals as well as kids and adults. This is a breed that is largely very peace-loving and has a very cheerful disposition. Some Basset Hounds love to act the clown and others will carry themselves with dignity and calmness. The breed tends to be calm, polite and amiable around strangers. These dogs have a great sense of humor, and make wonderful companion and family pets

These dogs have a very responsive nature, and fare well with patient training methods. The Basset Hound is an animal that will be quite happy lazing by the fire, but his tendency to put on weight means that he will need to be exercised on a regular basis. The Basset Hound can sometimes be stubborn, and beware of his love of food, as he will be quite happy to steal any food that he finds on his travels. Although training these dogs is moderately easy with the right attitude, they can be very difficult to housebreak.

Health: The Basset Hound has a life expectancy of around 10-12 years. A number of health problems and issues are associated with this breed and this includes luxating patella, PRA, ectropion, entropion, epilepsy, elbow dysplasia, spinal problems, bleeding disorders, glaucoma, vWD, thyroid problems, and ear infections.

14. Pressure treated wood

Many well deserving & caring non-profit animal shelters and rescues rely upon the generosity of volunteers and donations to continue their rescue efforts. Animal shelters depend heavily on fundraisers so they can continue to operate their facilities and tend to the needs of homeless, abused and stray animals in need of extra love and care. So you can imagine that they need your help! Our friends at ehow have thought of some creative & simple things we all can do to help our local animal rescue & shelter raise money and supplies for their efforts.

1. Set a Monetary goal. How much do you want to raise, and in what time frame?

2. Organize a Spare Change Jar. Make a public announcement or send out email  at your work or school that you are trying to raise money for your local rescue & shelter. Set the jar and sign out for people to donate spare change. Every week you can collect the money and drop off proceeds to local rescue or shelter.

3. Host a dog wash event. Have volunteers sign up to commit some time to helping set up and participate in the dog wash event. Contact local pet stores to see if they can donate shampoo & brushes for the event and have people donate clean old towels to the cause.  You will also need a hose and access to water. You might want to consider hosting the dog wash in the rescue parking lot to draw awareness about the organization and spur on adoptions. Advertise that people can bring up their dogs for a bath and charge a fee. Local newspapers may advertise this event for free, and flyers can be distributed among the community.

4. Host a dog walk-athon. Choose a day and host a dog walk, either through town or at a local park. Charge a "walk fee" of maybe $5, and everyone walking their dog will receive a certificate, knowing that their money is going to help an animal shelter. See if you can get buttons or t-shirts donated. You can even set up a stand and sell items for a little extra money, such as bottled water or dog dishes.

5. Organize an auction. Collect donations from local businesses and people. Try to get a couple of large prizes, such as tickets to a major league baseball game or a mountain bike. Sell tickets for the prizes, and at the same time, you can sell 50/50 tickets to raise even more money. Refreshments are another option to make more money if you have enough volunteers.

6. Throw a garage sale and donate all money raised. Collect donations of items to sell, and advertise all over town. Make sure to be clear to everyone that all money raised goes towards the animal shelter.

7. Challenge the local community to give & get involved. Create an excitement that is infectious, and others will want to join in and do the same thing. Encourage others to do what they can to raise money for animal shelters and your efforts will go a long way.

Like humans, dogs have to deal with not so pleasant stomach issues and bouts of diarrhea. If your dog is experiencing extreme and continuous diarrhea, dehydration, or other signs of sickness, seek advice from your veterinarian immediately. But often times a simple home remedy  of white rice and boiled chicken will suffice. Adjust recipe according to your dogs weight.

Chicken & Rice Dog Recipe

Ingredients:

Frozen boneless skinless chicken breasts
½ cup white rice
2 cup of water

Instructions:

1) Bring 1 cup of water to a boil in a pot.
2) Boil 1 breast of chicken for 15-20 minutes in the water until juicy and tender.
3) Bring the other cup of water to a boil in a separate pot.
4) Pre-rinse the white rice in a strainer and then cook in the second pot according to the instructions on the package.
5) Drain the chicken out of the water when it is cooked. Shred the chicken in small bit sizes.
6) Mix the shredded chicken and rice in a bowl. Allow it to cool a bit as to not burn your dog's mouth.

Even the most sick pup loves a good meal of rice and chicken, which is often all a pup can stomach when diarrhea sets in. Slowly increase the amount of food given to your dog over the course of a day or two. Within a few hours or days, the diarrhea should stop completely and your dog can be weaned back on his regular diet if the diarrhea subsides.  Although it can be tempting to spoil a sick dog back to health it is important to avoid dog treats, chews and oily food until the diarrhea is gone.

**IMPORTANT** Make sure to keep your dog hydrated throughout the entire process. Keep his water bowl full and, if he isn't consuming any liquids, contact a vet.
