Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed: We Salute Pedro the Puggle

We always love getting emails from our customers & readers asking us to feature their dog or favorite breed for our Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed blog series every Thursday. As always we are honored to oblige. Thanks Carter for submitting your handsome Puggle Pedro to be featured. We affectionately refer to our mixed-breed canine companions as “dogs of mixed heritage” who make our lives more colorful. Whether your dog is a purebred or mixed breed remember all dogs are created equal, deserving of unconditional love and their time in the spotlight.

This is Pedro! He is a four month old Puggle. He was born in Ohio and now lives with in NYC. He is very active and such a joy . He loves chewing, as most puppies do, but his favorite chew toy is a Flossie, he can chew through one in a day. LOL!

Height: 13 - 15 inches

Weight: 15 - 20 lbs

Coat: The Puggles coat is smooth, straight and short haired.

Color: Puggles come in a variety of colors, but fawn or tan with a black mask covering the muzzle and around the eyes is the most common. That said, fawn Puggles can have a varying degree of black coloring on their face, some feature full masks, while others have very small amounts. In addition to fawn, some dogs are born solid black, white, tri-colored or may have multi-colored coats.

Appearance: Puggles are a crossbreed (pug/beagle), and because of this fact, their physical appearance is difficult to generalize compared to that of purebred dogs, especially since they don’t have a breed standard. Though Puggles generally look alike, the appearance of these dogs is dependent on their parents. That being said, many of these pooches often have the fawn colored coat and wrinkled black masks that are characteristic of Pug’s but a body length, longer muzzle and floppy ears similar to the Beagle. It is not uncommon for this designer dog to also have a thickset body, under-bite, short legs, and a Beagle-length tail with a Pug curl.

Temperament: Puggles are sweet tempered lap dogs, and yet are very playful creatures. They are energetic, affectionate and bright. They bond quickly with their owners and family, and are excellent companions. They are very social animals and require plenty of attention. and want to be involved in as much activity with their pack as possible.

They are friendly toward strangers, other dogs, household pets and children. Puggles have a keen sense of smell, like a Beagle, finding many smells very interesting, and will be inclined to track scents. They like to use their voice and will alert their owners to strange sounds and people, making them a good watchdog. Overall, they are a happy-go-lucky dog with a very friendly disposition.

Health: The Life expectancy for Puggles is 10-15 years. Puggles are a relatively healthy breed, but owners need to be aware that this dog is prone to any genetic illness that may affect their parents, and are also at risk for any disease that affects the Pug or Beagle breeds. Health concerns a Puggle may face include, cherry eye, entropion, skin infections, slipped stifles (dislocated kneecaps), back problems, epilepsy, lameness, respiratory issues, and Pug Dog Encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) to name a few. This breed is also prone to overheating and is intolerant of extreme temperatures.

Common Illnesses include: eye problems, Pug Dog Encephalitis, lameness respiratory issues, skin infections.

We have found that the only thing recession proof is the unconditional love of our furry companions. If you love your pets as much as we do, then you will understand why our pugs and spokesdogs Sushi & Espy have been our life preservers during our lowest times. Why Your Dog May Be Your Answer to the Recession by DogTipper.com

dog_best_friendTough economic times can impact your life in ways that range from stress to budget cutbacks to lack of social interaction. A dog, though, can be man’s best friend when it comes to recessionary times.

As stress levels rise and spending power diminishes in today’s tough economic times, dog owners are finding that when the going gets tough, the tough go play with their dogs. While there’s no denying that dogs come with fixed costs ranging from food to vet care, your dog can also be your best friend during an economic downturn. Here are nine ways Rover just might be your answer to the recession:

1. He’s a Good Reason to Stay Home. Staying home—rather then heading out and spending money—is never more appealing than when there’s a four-legged friend waiting for you. Suddenly there’s a good reason to dine at home or to choose an afternoon at the dog park rather than the shopping mall.

2. He’s a Great Exercise Partner. Need to save money by cutting back on a fitness club membership? No problem. You’ll never have a more dedicated personal trainer you’re your dog who will remind you—and remind you, and remind you—that it is time to get out and exercise.

3. He Loves Day Trips. Can’t afford that week at a Caribbean resort? Fido’s happy you’re staying home and considering taking him on a day trip to the lake or local park.

4. He Doesn’t Mind Cutbacks. OK, you might not want to opt for a home haircut yourself, but your dog doesn’t mind if you cut out the groomer and just give him a trim yourself.

5. He’s Happy with Used Items. Do the kids want the latest toys in the stores? You won’t have that same pressure from your dog. He’s happy with used toys from garage sales and thrift stores, perfect for playing fetch or romping around the yard.

6. He’s a Great Stress Reliever. Economic problems cause stress, there’s no doubt about it. But it’s a proven fact that dogs are an excellent stress reliever and also do wonders to lower high blood pressure. One look in those big eyes and it’s easy to see why.

7. He’ll Help You Get Out and About. Whether you’ve lost your job and no longer see your usual crowd of people or you’ve just cut back on social events, economic difficulties can mean less social interaction. Your dog, by encouraging you to get out and walk or to play in dog parks, helps you to interact with people with similar interests.

8. He Makes You Feel Like a King. A beleaguered bank account or a pink slip can leave you feeling worthless. All you have to do, though, is look in your dog’s eyes and you know that you’re the best there is. You are the center of his world.

9. He Knows the Best Things in Life are Free. Your dog values your companionship more than anything in the world. Money doesn’t mean a thing to him but you do. There’s no greater gift you can give your dog than your own time.

Spotlight On A Breed The Pug

Pug

Weight: 14-30 pounds

Height: 9-11 inches at the shoulders

Coat: Short (but they do shed)

Color: Fawn, Black, Silver, Apricot

Appearance
The Pug's appearance is characterized by their flat, wrinkled faces, compact muscular bodies, and curled tails.

Noise

While most Pugs do not bark much, many do, and they are still quite a noisy breed of dog. Many Pugs make a grunting nasal noise, that increases when they get excited, nearly all pugs snort quite often, almost as if they are sneezing, showering anyone who is too close.  In addition, many of them have quite a snoring problem.

Temperament

The Pug is a popular breed as a house pet, as it is easy to groom (though it sheds substantially more than other dogs of similar size). However, pugs like to consider themselves as the boss. Therefore tiny children who do not understand how to correctly treat the pug can cause the pug to be scared, defensive, or shy. Pugs are true "lap dogs", in that they most often want nothing more than to curl up in their owner's lap.  Pugs like most breeds also love dog chews like bully sticks to occupy them!

Health

Pugs can scratch their corneas (corneal ulcer) or puncture their eyeballs. Their short noses can also cause them to develop breathing problems. They are also prone to skin infections if the crevices in their faces are not kept clean. Additionally, the breed's characteristic flat face may also contribute to tooth and mouth problem, they may have crowded teeth or a tongue that hangs out. Pugs typically love to eat, and so are prone to obesity; they can quickly reach unhealthy weights.
