We recently had the opportunity to attend BlogPaws in Denver, Colorado and got to meet our passionate online pet community of bloggers, rescues, pet lovers and businesses making a difference. The main theme of the event was "Be the Change for Pets, giving back to help pets and animals everywhere. We got to speak with Laura Posey, founder of Save This Pup,  and her amazing team of animal activist passionate about saving homeless animals.  For their inspirational story and dedication we would love to honor Save This Pup as our Best Bully Sticks Paws for A Cause Recipient Award. Currently, Save This Pup is in its fund-raising stage to build their website for connecting needy dogs with caring sponsors. In order to help their cause Best Bully Sticks would like to award them $1000 toward their bark-worthy and heartfelt venture.

Many shelter dogs are lucky to find loving homes. But what happens to the pets left behind—those equally deserving companions who for some reason just haven’t found a home? Because it costs less to euthanize pets than it does to care for them, under-funded shelters are often forced to make hard decisions affecting good pets. In the United States, it is estimated that 4 million dogs and cats are euthanized each year because rescue organizations don’t have enough money to support them until they find permanent homes. Many of these animals could be saved if there was a way to raise enough money to feed, house, train and treat them. Sadly, for many deserving rescue organizations fund-raising and obtaining donations can be difficult.

What is Save This Pup?

The SaveThisPup Foundation is a organization that connects caring people with individual dogs to sponsor. In exchange for a monthly donation, sponsors will receive a photo and report on their sponsored animal’s progress towards adoption. This model has been used successfully by organizations such as ChildFund and Save The Children for over 70 years. It’s time to apply that success to homeless animals. The SaveThisPup.com website will serve to coordinate sponsorships, donation distribution, and animal update dissemination. It will be a link between the sponsors and shelters both financially as well as providing feedback and appreciation for information. The goal is for 100% of donations to pass through to the rescue organizations. In addition, the website will allow rescue organizations to connect with each other and share resources, best practices, and an overall support network. Finally, the site will offer information for dog.

Animal shelters and humane societies are overrun with abandoned pets looking for loving homes. The real tragedy is that thousands of these animals end up being euthanized rather than adopted. Sadly, shelter animals are often thought of as "sloppy seconds" or "someone else's problem." On the contrary, a rescued dog or cat can be a great alternative to purchasing a pet from a breeder.
