Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed: We Salute Pedro the Puggle

We always love getting emails from our customers & readers asking us to feature their dog or favorite breed for our Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed blog series every Thursday. As always we are honored to oblige. Thanks Carter for submitting your handsome Puggle Pedro to be featured. We affectionately refer to our mixed-breed canine companions as “dogs of mixed heritage” who make our lives more colorful. Whether your dog is a purebred or mixed breed remember all dogs are created equal, deserving of unconditional love and their time in the spotlight.

This is Pedro! He is a four month old Puggle. He was born in Ohio and now lives with in NYC. He is very active and such a joy . He loves chewing, as most puppies do, but his favorite chew toy is a Flossie, he can chew through one in a day. LOL!

Height: 13 - 15 inches

Weight: 15 - 20 lbs

Coat: The Puggles coat is smooth, straight and short haired.

Color: Puggles come in a variety of colors, but fawn or tan with a black mask covering the muzzle and around the eyes is the most common. That said, fawn Puggles can have a varying degree of black coloring on their face, some feature full masks, while others have very small amounts. In addition to fawn, some dogs are born solid black, white, tri-colored or may have multi-colored coats.

Appearance: Puggles are a crossbreed (pug/beagle), and because of this fact, their physical appearance is difficult to generalize compared to that of purebred dogs, especially since they don’t have a breed standard. Though Puggles generally look alike, the appearance of these dogs is dependent on their parents. That being said, many of these pooches often have the fawn colored coat and wrinkled black masks that are characteristic of Pug’s but a body length, longer muzzle and floppy ears similar to the Beagle. It is not uncommon for this designer dog to also have a thickset body, under-bite, short legs, and a Beagle-length tail with a Pug curl.

Temperament: Puggles are sweet tempered lap dogs, and yet are very playful creatures. They are energetic, affectionate and bright. They bond quickly with their owners and family, and are excellent companions. They are very social animals and require plenty of attention. and want to be involved in as much activity with their pack as possible.

They are friendly toward strangers, other dogs, household pets and children. Puggles have a keen sense of smell, like a Beagle, finding many smells very interesting, and will be inclined to track scents. They like to use their voice and will alert their owners to strange sounds and people, making them a good watchdog. Overall, they are a happy-go-lucky dog with a very friendly disposition.

Health: The Life expectancy for Puggles is 10-15 years. Puggles are a relatively healthy breed, but owners need to be aware that this dog is prone to any genetic illness that may affect their parents, and are also at risk for any disease that affects the Pug or Beagle breeds. Health concerns a Puggle may face include, cherry eye, entropion, skin infections, slipped stifles (dislocated kneecaps), back problems, epilepsy, lameness, respiratory issues, and Pug Dog Encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) to name a few. This breed is also prone to overheating and is intolerant of extreme temperatures.

Common Illnesses include: eye problems, Pug Dog Encephalitis, lameness respiratory issues, skin infections.

Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed: Congrats Snoopy the Beagle

We always love getting emails asking us to feature their dog  or favorite breed for our Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed blog series. As always we are honored to oblige. Thanks Karyn for submitting your 1 yr Beagle Snoopy to be featured.  We can see why he is the love of your life. Snoopy thanks for being a huge tail wagging fan of our bully sticks. Happy chewing!!

Height: Generally between 13”-16” high

Weight: 18 – 35 lbs.

Coat: Short, dense, smooth and weatherproof.

Color: White, black, tan, red, lemon and blue mottle. They can be any combination of Hound colors other than liver. Chest is always white. Tricolor Beagles are almost always born black and white, with brown and other spots appearing later on in life. Some Beagles change colors most of their lives.

Appearance: The general appearance of the Beagle resembles a Foxhound in miniature, but the head is broader and the muzzle shorter, the expression completely different and the legs shorter in proportion to the body. They are generally between 13 and 16 inches (33 and 41 cm) high at the withers and weigh between 18 and 35 lb (8.2 and 16 kg), with females being slightly smaller than males on average.

They have a smooth, somewhat domed skull with a medium-length, square-cut muzzle and a black (or occasionally liver), gumdrop nose. The jaw is strong and the teeth scissor together with the upper teeth fitting perfectly over the lower teeth and both sets aligned square to the jaw. The eyes are large, hazel or brown, with a mild hound-like pleading look. The large ears are long, soft and low-set, turning towards the cheeks slightly and rounded at the tips.

Beagles have a strong, medium-length neck (which is long enough for them to easily bend to the ground to pick up a scent), with little folding in the skin but some evidence of a dewlap; a broad chest narrowing to a tapered abdomen and waist and a short, slightly curved tail (known as the “stern”) tipped with white. The white tip, known as the “flag” has been selectively bred with the sole purpose of allowing the dog to be easily seen when its head is down following a scent. The tail does not curl over the back, but is held upright when the dog is active. The Beagle has a muscular body and a medium-length, smooth, hard coat. The front legs are straight and carried under the body while the rear legs are muscular and well bent at the stifles.

Temperament: The Beagle has an even temper and gentle disposition. Beagles are “merry”, amiable and generally neither aggressive nor timid. They enjoy company, and although they may initially be standoffish with strangers, they are easily won over. They make poor guard dogs for this reason, although their tendency to bark or howl when confronted with the unfamiliar makes them good watchdogs.

Beagles are intelligent, but as a result of being bred for the long chase are single-minded and determined, which can make them hard to train. They are generally obedient but can be difficult to recall once they have picked up a scent and are easily distracted by smells around them. They do not generally feature in obedience trials; while they are alert, respond well to food-reward training, and are eager to please, they are easily bored or distracted.

Beagles are excellent with children and this is one of the reasons they have become popular family pets, but they are pack animals, and can be prone to separation anxiety. Not all Beagles will howl, but most will bark when confronted with strange situations, and some will bay (also referred to as “speaking”, “giving tongue”, or “opening”) when they catch the scent of potential quarry. They also generally get along well with other dogs. They are not demanding with regard to exercise; their inbred stamina means they do not easily tire when exercised, but they also do not need to be worked to exhaustion before they will rest, though regular exercise helps ward off the weight gain to which the breed is prone.

Health: The Life expectancy for Beagles is about 12-15 years. Beagles may be prone to epilepsy, Hypothyroidism and a number of types of dwarfism occur in Beagles. Two conditions in particular are unique to the breed: Funny Puppy, in which the puppy is slow to develop and eventually develops weak legs, a crooked back and although normally healthy, is prone to range of illnesses; Hip dysplasia, common in Harriers and in some larger breeds, is rarely considered a problem in Beagles. Beagles are considered a chondrodystrophic breed, meaning that they are prone to types of disk diseases. In rare cases, Beagles may develop immune mediated polygenic arthritis (where the immune system attacks the joints) even at a young age.

Their long floppy ears can mean that the inner ear does not receive a substantial air flow or that moist air becomes trapped, and this can lead to ear infections. Beagles may also be affected by a range of eye problems; two common ophthalmic conditions in Beagles are glaucoma and corneal dystrophy. “Cherry eye”, a prolapse of the gland of the third eyelid, and distichiasis, a condition in which eyelashes grow into the eye causing irritation, sometimes exist; both these conditions can be corrected with surgery. They can suffer from several types of retinal atrophy. Failure of the nasolacrimal drainage system can cause dry eye or leakage of tears onto the face.

As field dogs they are prone to minor injuries such as cuts and sprains, and, if inactive, obesity is a common problem as they will eat whenever food is available and rely on their owners to regulate their weight. When working or running free they are also likely to pick up parasites such as fleas, ticks, harvest mites and tapeworms, and irritants such as grass seeds can become trapped in their eyes, soft ears or paws.

Beagles may exhibit a behaviour known as reverse sneezing, in which they sound as if they are choking or gasping for breath, but are actually drawing air in through the mouth and nose. The exact cause of this behaviour is not known, but it is not harmful to the dog.

Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed: South African Boerboel Mastiff

boerWe always love getting emails asking us to feature your dog or favorite breed for in our Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed blog series. As always we are honored to oblige. Well without further ado, we are proud to spotlight Honey the South African Boerboel Mastiff. Thanks Keree for sending over the amazing picture!

Height: Male 25-28 inches, Female 23-25.5 inches

Weight: Male & Female 154-200 lbs

Coat: The coat of the African Boerboel is uniformly short, relatively coarse and dense.

Color: The coloring can vary from reddish brown, cream, all shades of brindle, tawny with or without a black mask with some white on chest.

Appearance: The African Boerboel is a very large, muscular and impressive looking breed. They are often confused for a cross between a Mastiff and a Bulldog, however they are a unique breed that has been developed in Africa as a protection and working dog. In this breed males are distinctly masculine in appearance as the females are smaller, slighter and should be definitely female in all aspects.

The African Boerboel is very distinctive in appearance. The head is very square in shape with a short, thick muzzle and wide massive head. The skull is somewhat flat between the high set ears and there is a stop that is noticeable but not sharp. The ears are triangular and folded, held very close to the head. The eyes are horizontal in orientation and can be any color of brown that is in keeping with the coat color. The skin around the eyes should be dark regardless of the eye color. The area between the eyes is well filled and solid in appearance, as are the noticeable cheeks. The dogs may or may not have a black mask that covers the muzzle and the top lip. The top lip is somewhat fleshy and thick in appearance but should not hang down over the lower jaw. The nose is black with well developed nostrils. The head is one of the most distinguishing of the African Boerboel breed.

The neck of the African Boerboel is arched and muscular, adding to the breed's appearance of strength and protection. The shoulders of the dog are very well developed and strong, with the neck positioned high on the shoulders. The chest is deep and broad, flowing into a well developed rib cage and a sturdy, yet not chunky or disproportionately heavy looking body. The front legs are completely straight when viewed from the side or the front and end in thick padded, ball-shaped feet.

The top line is very straight without any noticeable sloping. The back is moderately long but balanced in appearance. The hindquarters are slightly sloping towards the high set tail. The tail is traditionally docked to the first three joints, but may also be left long and natural, in which case it curves up at the hock. The back legs are incredibly powerful with heavy muscling that is common in the Mastiff breeds. The legs should be well bent and carried under the hindquarters and unlike the front legs they should not be straight.

The African Boerboel should move with purpose and a "buoyant" step. They have a fluid and athletic gait, not a heavy or shuffling gait. Their joints are well developed and not loose or bulky. They do not have the heavy wrinkles or deep folds of skin seen on many of the Mastiff breeds, however there will be slight wrinkling of the thick skin on the brow.

Temperament: The African Boerboel is a bit of a study in opposites. As a fierce and loyal watchdog they will bark and loudly announce strangers and strange animals in the area, however they will quickly learn who is friend and welcome them into the house when they have been introduced. The African Boerboel is also a guard dog, using their size and strength to defend their property and family with as much aggression and physical action as required. They are very protective of their yard and house and care must be taken to keep these dogs securely in a fence, as they will expand their area to protect should they get out of the fence or yard.

The African Boerboel is a very loving family dog. They absolutely enjoy spending time with the family. Despite their aggression towards strangers the African Boerboel will play and romp with everyone in the family and are especially good with children. They are very tolerant of even rough play with kids and their large size makes them great companions for kids of all ages. The African Boerboel is exceptionally gentle with younger children although as with all dogs young kids should never be left alone unsupervised. They also tend to be very accepting of other pets including dogs, cats and even other small pets and livestock. Proper socialization is key for these dogs to help them learn how to differentiate between potential dangers and friendly visitors.

The African Boerboel will typically be somewhat standoffish with new people, at least until they learn that they are to be considered a "friend". This is very important if the dogs need to be cared for if the family has to leave or if they have to be kenneled. Ensure that this breed has time to get to know their caregiver before leaving them with someone other than a family member.

Health: The life expectancy of the African Boerboel is around 12-15 years and overall is a very healthy breed. There are two different conditions that may be problematic in the breed although they are not fatal. The first condition occurs only in females and is VH or vaginal hyperplasia. This condition is genetic and occurs in different grades or levels of severity. Any female with abnormal tissue development of the vaginal area should not be used in breeding programs. The second genetic condition to be aware of is  Canine hip dysplasia or CHD as well as elbow dysplasia common in most dog breeds.

Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed: Congrats Oliver the Lowchen

Ollie practicing his agility jumps.

Ollie practicing his agility jumps.

We always love getting emails asking us to feature their dog  or favorite breed for our Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed blog series. As always we are honored to oblige. Thanks Mari for submitting your Lowchen boy Oliver Wolfgang Rock Me Amadeus (aka Ollie) to be featured.  We can see why he is the love of your life. Oliver thanks for being a huge tail wagging fan of our bully sticks. Happy chewing!!

Height: 12-14 inches

Weight: 8-18 lbs

Coat: Löwchen coat is long, thick, and soft with a wave. The Lowchen has a soft and silky coat texture. It is typically trimmed to resemble a lion. Their back end is sheared to the skin, and a tuft of hair is left on the end of the tail. The ears are left long and fringed. If the coat is not trimmed into the lion cut the fur is long and wavy; never curly.

Color: The coloring of the Löwchen can vary, and includes black and tan, chocolate and tan, cream, gold, white, black, and various other colors and combinations.

Appearance: The Löwchen is a small, sturdy, and compact dog that is almost square in shape with an appearance that has earned him the nickname of Little Lion Dog.  It is strong with a short, broad skull. It holds itself proudly, and its gait is uplifting and effortless. The breed’s ears are pendent-shaped and feathered, and its intelligence is evident in its eyes. Its coat is long, thick, and soft with a wave. The traditional cut that gives the Löwchen the name of Little Lion is clipped close on its hindquarters and the lower half of its tail. Additionally, the front legs are close-clipped, and the main is left long and natural to give the appearance of a lion

Temperament: The Löwchen is a friendly, happy dog. Dogs of this breed are both active and playful, and very intelligent. The Löwchen makes a good pet for families with children and an excellent house pet. Known as the Little Lion Dog, the Lowchen is a dog with bags of character, plenty of spirit, and a lively and cheerful personality. These energetic little dogs make good family pets and companions, and are well suited to the inexperienced dog owner as well as the more experienced. This intelligent breed is quick to learn and eager to please, which makes training relatively easy. The Lowchen is a dog that is entertaining and fun to be around, but is also dignified, sensible, and peaceful. He thrives on the attention of his family, and has plenty of love and affection to shower upon his owners. Although the Lowchen loves to play and join in with all the family fun, he will also be content to simply snuggle up and relax with you.

Lowchens are very agile, athletic dog.

Lowchens are very agile, athletic dog.

These mild mannered dogs can sometimes lean towards timidity, and this means that early socialization is important in order to promote confidence and improve social skills. A well socialized Lowchen will get along well with children, providing that they are gentle and considerate, and will also get along well with other pets. With strangers many will be friendly and polite, although some may be timid or shy. Although the Lowchen is suitable for apartment living, he may be a keen barker and this could pose a problem in terms of noise. His tendency to announce visitors and raise the alarm makes him an effective watchdog. This is not a dog for those that have little time to devote to a pet, as he does need attention, love, and mental stimulation. His exercise requirements are low, although you should ensure that he has a safe and secured place to play or take him out for walks regularly.

Health: The life expectancy of the Lowchen is around 13-16 years, and there are just a few health issues that are linked to this generally hardy, healthy breed. This includes PRA, cataract, luxating patella, and possible allergies.

Color: white with red, red or brindle with white; white must appear on chest, feet, tail tip, noseband, and collar (or spot on nape); may have dark mask

Appearance: The Saint Bernard is a huge animal with a muscular build, yet he has a very docile, almost sad look about him. These dogs come in both long haired and short haired varieties. The former has a coat of medium length, which is rough in texture. The latter has a short, close fitting coat, which is also rough to the touch. The coloring of the coat is red and white or white and red, depending on the markings.

Temperament: The Saint Bernard has a somewhat sorrowful expression, but is actually very good-natured. They are excellent with children and other animals. They have a protective instinct for their family and make excellent watchdogs. They are sensible and loving and make a great family pet. They may display stubbornness, so owners must be very patient. They thrive on high amounts of love and attention. The Saint Bernard is prone to anxiety if left alone for extended periods of time and may destroy their owner's home and belongings. While his sheer size and intimidating bark are enough to frighten away most intruders, this big and powerful dog is usually quite the lovable teddy bear.  Quite placid, especially when compared to other large-breed dogs, he makes an excellent pet but a poor guard dog unless, of course, his family is threatened.  If he feels the need to protect those he loves, he will do so courageously. The Saint Bernard is  extremely patient and friendly by nature. They are very gentle and tolerant with children and other animals and make a great family pet. They are obedient, highly intelligent, and thoughtful. The Saint Bernard is a very large and strong dog, but displays an easygoing and mature demeanor.

Health: The average lifespan of this breed is between 8-10 years. There are also a number of health problems to look out for with this breed, and this includes ectropion, entropion, heart defects, cancer, bloat, epilepsy, HD, and OCD.
