We affectionately refer to our mixed-breed canine companions as "dogs of mixed heritage". Whether your dog is a purebred or mixed breed remember all dogs are created equal and deserving of unconditional love.

Bio About Indiana

Indiana is believed to be a Labrador/Dachshund mix and will be a year old in June. She is just under 40lbs. She was adopted her from a shelter when she was 3 months old, and has been a bundle of fun and energy for the King family ever since.

Congrats on being spotlighted!!

Dachshund Breed Description

Weight: average of 20 pounds.

Coat: The Dachshund comes in three different varieties. The Smooth Haired Dachshund, Wirehaired Dachshund, and the Longhaired Dachshund. He also comes in two different sizes being standard and miniature. The Longhaired Dachshund has a long and straight coat, with hair slightly feathered and longer on the underbelly, ears, chest, and legs. The Smooth Coat has a straight, smooth, short, and glossy coat that should all be of equal length along the body of the dog. The Wirehaired has a coat of broken appearance with wiry, coarse, and harsh hair.

The one-colored coats can be red or cream which may or may not have darker hairs throughout. They may have a small white patch on the chest. The Two-colored Dachshunds may have black, chocolate, wild boar, gray, blue and fawn coats with rich tan or cream markings above the eyes, on the underlip, sides of the jaw, inner edge of the ear, front, breast, throat, inside and behind the front legs, the paws, rump extending one to two thirds up the underside of the tail. Dappled Dachshunds have areas of lighter color contrasted with a darker base color. They may have a white patch on the chest. The Brindle Dachshund has a pattern of dark or black stripes over the entire body. They may only be visible on the tan points. Sable Dachshunds have a uniform dark overlay on the red coat. The hairs in the overlay are two-colored with the tip being much darker than the base color. The sable Dachshunds typically have a widow's peak on the head.
Wirehaired Dachshunds - The most common colors of Wirehaired Dachshunds are wild boar, black & tan and various shades of red. Any color or patterns listed above are admissible. Wild boar is a banding of the individual hairs that gives the coat an overall grizzled look. Points of tan may or may not be seen. Variations of this pattern can include red boar and chocolate-and-tan boar. There may be a small patch of white located on the chest.
Longhaired Dachshund - The coat of the Longhaired Dachshund can be any of the colors of the Smooth-coated Dachshund.

Appearance: The Dachshund has a long, round body that is low to the ground due to their short legs. The head is elongated with a slight convex skull and long muzzle. The Dachshund's skin is elastic and free from excessive wrinkling. The Dachshund carries its head with the utmost confident. They have an alert, intelligent expression.

Temperament: Dachshunds are a very clownish breed and can be very mischievous at times. A very intuitive dog, the Dachshund is now most commonly seen as a companion rather than a hunter. The Dachshund is an all around friendly dog, loves people, very outgoing, and is sure to steal the hearts of everyone he meets. The Dachshund is a fun loving dog, tenacious, and lively, but can become jealous at times. This breed does very well with older and more considerate children.

Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed: English Bull Terrier

Bailey the English Bull Terrier (flickr pic by spectrefloat )

Bailey the English Bull Terrier (flickr pic by spectrefloat )

Height: 51-61 cm (20-24 inches)

Weight: 20-38 kg (44-85 pounds)

Coat: The coat of the English Bull terrier is extremely short, fine and harsh in texture and is very flat against the body

Color: The English Bull Terrier is white or any color with white markings. Brindle, fawn, brown and tan are common colors with or without white markings.

Appearance: The English Bull Terrier's most recognizable feature is its head, described as 'egg shaped' when viewed from the front, almost flat at the top, with a Roman muzzle sloping evenly down to the end of the nose with no stop. The unique triangle-shaped eyes are small, dark, and deep-set. The body is full and round, while the shoulders are robust and muscular and the tail is carried horizontally. Bull terriers are known to have more muscle than any other breed of dog pound for pound. It walks with a jaunty gait, and is popularly known as the 'gladiator of the canine race'.

Temperament: Though Bull Terrier's was once a fierce gladiator, it is much gentler today, but will certainly defend its owner in a truly critical situation. Bull terriers are known to be courageous, scrappy, fun-loving, active, clownish and fearless. The Bull Terrier is a loyal and polite dog. They become very attached to their owners. The Bull Terrier thrives on firm, consistent leadership and affection and makes a fine family pet. Bull Terriers like to be doing something and fit in well with active families where they receive a great deal of companionship and supervision.

They do not do well in situations where they are left alone for 8 hours a day. This breed can be a wonderful pet if very thoroughly socialized and trained, but not recommended for most households. Fond of both grown-ups and children, but if they do not get enough physical and mental exercise they may be too energetic for small children. Children should be taught how to display leadership towards the dog. Meek owners will find them to become very protective, willful, possessive and/or jealous. Bull Terriers may try to join into family rough housing or quarrel. Bull Terriers must be given a lot of structure. Be sure to socialize them well and remain their pack leader 100% of the time, otherwise, they can be extremely aggressive with other dogs. Unaltered males may not get along with other male dogs. Males and females can live together happily and two females can also be a good combination with care and supervision. They are not recommended with other non-canine pets such as hamsters and guinea pigs. They make excellent watch dogs.

Health: The average lifespan of this breed is between 10-14 years. Like all dogs there are genetic and health problems found in the English Bull Terrier breed. The most common health conditions include: Patellar luxation -dislocated kneecaps, common in most medium to small breeds. Skin Allergies - prone to flea and environmental allergies. Zinc Deficiency- Lethal Acrodermatitis, seen by small birth weights and sizes, skeletal deformities, sores, fading of the coat and failure to grow. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder - prone to activities such as chronic tail chasing, scratching, chewing, anxiety type behaviors. Deafness - all white Bull terriers are prone to either being born deaf or going deaf very shortly after birth.

Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed: Chow Chow

chowHeight: Males: 18 - 20"″ ; Females: 17– 19″.

Weight: Male: 50– 70 lbs.; Female: 45 – 65 lbs.

Coat: Chow Chow breed has a very dense double coat that is either smooth or rough (course). The fur is particularly thick around the neck, giving the distinctive ruff or mane appearance. The coarse-coated Chow Chow has a wooly, dense undercoat and a straight, extended outer-coat that forms a teeming ruff encircling the head and neck. The smooth-coated Chow Chow lacks the off-standing outer-coat but is otherwise identical.

Color: Chow Chow coat is either red, black, blue, cinnamon/fawn, and cream.

Appearance:

The Chow is a sturdily built dog that is square in profile with broad skull and small, triangular, erect ears that are rounded at the tip. The breed has a very dense double coat that is either smooth or rough. The fur is particularly thick around the neck, giving the distinctive ruff or mane appearance. The coat may be one of five colors including red, black, blue, cinnamon/fawn, and cream.

Their eyes should be deep set and almond in shape. Chows are distinguished by their unusual blue-black/purple tongue and very straight hind legs, resulting in a rather stilted gait. The bluish color extends to the Chow's lips, which is the only dog breed with this distinctive bluish appearance in its lips and oral cavity (other dogs have black or a piebald pattern skin in their mouths). One other distinctive feature is their curly tail. It has thick hair and lays curled on its back. Their nose should be black (except the blue which can have a solid blue or slate colored nose).

Temperament: Described by some as lordly, the chow-chow is an intelligent dog that is not overly demonstrative. It is independent and can be somewhat stubborn. However, it is a devoted dog that is protective and devoted to its family despite its reserved nature. It is generally suspicious of strangers, and it has been known to be aggressive with other dogs. If socialized with children and other pets at an early age, the chow-chow will generally get along as an adult. Firm and consistent training from an early age is essential. While intelligent, the chow-chow is sometimes a challenge to obedience train due to its stubbornness. This breed has been known to guard its things, such as food, bones, toys, and areas of the house. Some do not like to walk on leashes. While not as affectionate as other breeds, the chow-chow can make a loyal family pet with the right training.

Health: The average lifespan of this breed is between 10-15 years. The Chow Chow is the dog breed most affected by elbow dysplasia. It is also prone to hip dysplasia, patellar luxation (slipping knee caps), thyroid disease, pemphigus foliaceus and ocular disorders such as entropion and ectropion

Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed: Bernese Mountain Dog

Running competition in Estonain Swiss Mountain dogs club winterday in Kõrvemaa. (flickr pic by Kätukas)

Running competition in Estonain Swiss Mountain dogs club winterday in Kõrvemaa. (flickr pic by Kätukas)

Height: Males: 25 - 28" ; Females: 23 - 26".

Weight: Male: 90 - 120 lbs.; Female: 70 - 100 lbs.

Coat: The Bernese Mountain Dog has a thick, moderately long and slightly wavy or straight coat. It has a bright natural sheen.

Color: Tricolor (Black/Tan/White or Black/Rust/White).

Appearance: The Bernese Mountain Dog is a large, beautifully colored working dog. Its head is broad and flat, with a gentle furrow and distinct stop, and a muzzle that is straight and long. Gently oval shaped eyes are brown in color. The ears are triangular, medium in size, set close to the head with softly rounded ends. A long, muscular neck leads to a topline that is even from withers to croup. The chest is deep and well-muscled, and the back firm and wide. The tail is long, bushy and carried low unless the dog is alert, in which case it is lifted slightly.

Temperament: The Bernese Mountain Dog is a fantastic pet for families with children. These gentle giants adore children and are protective, loving and gentle. They are loyal and tend to stay that way for life, which is why they should be brought into a home as puppies and ownership should not be changed after the age of 18 months if at all possible. This breed is sociable with other animals and accepting, though a tad reserved, around strangers. They are intelligent and hardworking, but also boisterous and energetic. They enjoy being around people and cannot be left alone for long periods. These dogs are sensitive in nature and need gentle guidance rather than sharp or harsh correction. All in all, the Bernese Mountain Dog makes a great family pet if socialized and trained correctly.

Health: The average lifespan of this breed is between 7-9 years. The Bernese Mountain Dog is vulnerable to hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat, several types of cancer, autoimmune diseases, and kidney problems. Progressive retinal atrophy, an eye disease that causes blindness, is becoming a problem as well.

Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed: American Bulldog & Boston Terrier

We always love getting tweets from our Twitter friends asking us to feature their dog  or favorite breed for our Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed blog series. As always we are honored to oblige. Thanks @dog_milk for submitting your adorable pics of your furry pack, Lulu, the American Bulldog and Beans the Boston Terrier. Since they seem inseparable friends & family we figured it was only fitting for them to share the spotlight. Thanks for following our @bestbullysticks tweets.

The American Bulldog

Lulu the American Bulldog (pic by twitter friend @dog_milk

Lulu the American Bulldog (pic by twitter friend @dog_milk

Height: Males: 22 – 27 inches; Females: 20 – 25 inches.

Weight: Male: 75 – 125 lbs.; Female: 60 – 100 lbs.

Coat: The coat is short, close, and stiff to the touch.

Color: White coat or any color pattern including black, red, brown and all shades of brindle

Appearance: The American Bulldog is a stocky and well built, strong-looking dog. Its coat is short and either white, white with patches, black and white brindle, fawn and white, fawn and white brindle or a combination of all of these. Some may even have what is called a blue patch. The color conformation is quite varied, but white must be somewhere in the coat for the dog to be confirmed in most ABD clubs.
The Johnson type is a larger dog with a shorter muzzle than the Scott type. However, many modern American Bulldogs are a combination of the two types. In general, American Bulldogs weigh between 60 and 125 pounds (27 to 57kg) and are 20 to 28 inches (52 to 70cm) at the withers. The American Bulldog is massive in comparison to both the French Bulldog and the British Bulldog due to the fact that the American Bulldog was never down bred to be a lap dog.

There are mainly five types of American Bulldogs:

*The Johnson type: This type is commonly known as the Classic or Bully type. These bulldogs are more aggressive and have pendulous lips, an undershot jaw, facial wrinkles and a shorter muzzle. Johnson’s famous American Bulldog, the Incredible Mean Machine had 30% characteristics of an English Bulldog, and forms the foundation for most of the modern American Bulldog.

*The Scott type: This type is also known as Standard or Performance type. Bulldogs belonging to this type are large, coarse, leggy and used to catch wild hogs and cattle. They have an athletic look and a long muzzle.

*The Painter/Margentina type: They were developed in late 70s by Joe Painter, Margentina and Tappe, and are mainly used in dog fighting. They are small in size and weigh about 25 – 35 kg.

*The Old Southern Whites type: These are the original country bulldogs. They served as a raw material for Johnson, Scott, etc, and helped them to develop advanced breeds of the American Bulldog.

*The Hybrid type: These are mainly American Bulldogs whose bloodline is a mixture of Johnson and Scott type. Some of the successful breeders of this type are Kyle Symmes, Matt Boyd, Grey Souza, etc.

Temperament: The essential characteristics of the American Bulldog are those, which enable it to work as a hog and cattle catching dog, and a protector of personal property. These tasks require a powerful, agile, confident dog with a large head and powerful jaws. The American Bulldog is a gentle, loving family companion who is fearless enough to face an angry bull or a human intruder; Good with children; Good with pets.

Health: The average lifespan of this bred is between 10 – 14 years, and their main health concern is the development of hip and elbow dysplasia. Regular joint health supplements can lower their chances of developing severe dysplasia. American Bulldogs are also at an increased risk for bone cancer, eye conditions such as entropion and ectropion, and enlarged hearts.

The Boston Terrier

Beans the Boston Terrier digging through the sands of time

Beans the Boston Terrier digging through the sands of time

Height: between 38-43cms (stands 15-17 inches at the withers)

Weight: Weight is divided by classes as follows: Under 15 pounds; 15 pounds and under 20 pounds; 20 pounds and not to exceed 25 pounds.

Coat: The coat is short, smooth, bright and fine in texture.

Color: The Boston Terrier is characteristically marked with white in proportion to either black, brindle, seal, or a combination of the three. Seal is a color specifically used to describe Boston Terriers and is defined as a black color with red highlights when viewed in the sun or bright light.

Appearance:

The Boston Terrier is a lively, highly intelligent, smooth coated, short-headed, compactly built, short-tailed, well balanced dog, brindle, seal or black in color and evenly marked with white. The head is in proportion to the size of the dog and the expression indicates a high degree of intelligence.

Boston Terriers are typically small, compactly built, well proportioned dogs with erect ears, short tails, and a short muzzle. The body is rather short and well knit, the limbs strong and neatly turned, the tail is short and no feature is so prominent that the dog appears badly proportioned. The dog conveys an impression of determination, strength and activity, with style of a high order; carriage easy and graceful. A proportionate combination of “Color and White Markings” is a particularly distinctive feature of a representative specimen.

Temperament:

Boston Terriers have strong, friendly personalities. Bostons can range in temperaments from those that are eager to please their master to those that are more stubborn. Both can be easily trained given a patient and assertive owner. The modern Boston Terrier can be gentle, alert, expressive, and well-mannered.  They were originally a cross-breed between the Old English Bulldog and the English White Terrier.

Some Bostons enjoy having another one for companionship. Both females and males generally bark only when necessary. Having been bred as a companion dog, they enjoy being around people, and, if properly socialized, get along well with children, the elderly, other canines, and non-canine pets. Some Boston Terriers are very cuddly, while others are more independent.

Health: The life expectancy of the Boston Terrier is 13-15 years. Several health issues are of concern in the Boston Terrier: cataracts (both juvenile and adult type), cherry eye, luxating patellas, deafness, heart murmur, and allergies. Curvature of the back, called roaching, might be caused by patella problems with the rear legs, which in turn causes the dog to lean forward onto the forelegs. This might also just be a structural fault with little consequence to the dog. Many Bostons cannot tolerate excessive heat and also extremely cold weather, due to the shortened muzzle, so hot or cold weather combined with demanding exercise can bring harm to a Boston Terrier. A sensitive digestive system is also typical of the Boston Terrier. In the absence of proper diet, flatulence is associated with the breed.

Bostons, along with Pug, Shih Tzu and other short-snouted breeds are Brachycephalic breeds. The word comes from Greek roots “Brachy,” meaning short and “cephalic,” meaning head. This anatomy can cause tiny nostrils, long palates and a narrow trachea. Because of this, Bostons may be prone to snoring and reverse sneeze, a rapid and repeated forced inhalation through the nose, accompanied by snorting or gagging sounds used to clear the palate of mucus, but does not harm the dog in any way. Bostons are also prone to sensitive stomachs and intestinal gas.
