Weekly Drool Recipe: Soft & Chewy Oatmeal Dog Treats from Bubby & Bean

When we say our final goodbye to a dear friend, it’s heartbreaking. And though time heals all wounds, BestBullySticks.com knows that you would never want to forget them. Such is the story with many dog lovers, including sisters Melissa & Morgan, the brains behind Bubby & Bean blog. Melissa’s dog, Leary (nicknamed Bubby) passed away a few days before Christmas last year. To remember their sweet Leary, Melissa’s sister Morgan whipped up this recipe in remembrance of him.

Everybody who met that special doggie instantly got a smile on their faces.  He was one of those friends that was always there for you and loved to snuggle.  And like most dogs, Leary LOVED food!  He knew he wasn’t supposed to beg for it, so when we would eat in front of him, he’d stand sideways and look at you out of the corner of his eye.  It cracked me up!  I was always a sucker for one particular look he'd give that made him look like a big soft puppy.  When he gave that look, a french fry or piece of cheese would “accidentally” make its way into his mouth.   He knew exactly how to work his auntie!  And that boy sure did love his cheese.  I even wrote the "For Leary" message in the picture at the top of this post in shredded cheddar, his favorite.

So in honor of Bubby, today I'm going to be showing you how to make a tasty doggie treat that I know he would have loved, and that your best furry friends will gobble up too.  I started making these when my husband and I noticed that our furry little girl Isis (aka the "Bean" in the Bubby and Bean!) had trouble eating hard treats.  They are soft so they’re great for older doggies, or for dogs who prefer softer foods.

This recipe is especially for you, Leary (bubby, bo-bos, roy boy, beezy, licious, and all the other nicknames that were made for you!).   I miss you every day.

Ingredients
1/2 cup – 3/4 cups oatmeal (depending on how dense you want the treats)
1/4 cup powdered milk
2 small jars beef baby food
1 tablespoon peanut butter (either crunchy or smooth works great)

Recipe Note: You can also use Cream of Wheat or wheat germ in place of the oatmeal.

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Combine all ingredients in a medium sized bowl.

3. Shape dough into hearts, bones, or any other doggie themed treat.

4. Place treats on greased cookie sheet or use a silicone baking mat.

5. Cook for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown.

6. Cool.  Store treats in your refrigerator for up to one week (or until your furry kid learns how to open the fridge!).

Thanks to Melissa & Morgan at Bubby & Bean for sharing Bubby’s story, this recipe and photos.

Bone Appétit & Enjoy!

Directions:
1. Pour pumpkin into a large bowl.

Recipe Notes: If using plain yogurt add 1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract.

It's that easy! This way has a little twang to it from the yogurt which is ok since Kirby likes yogurt but make sure your dog does. For a frozen treat you have several choices: use your ice cream maker, freeze and stir in thirty minute intervals until it has a creamy consistency, or spoon into molds or little plastic cups, cover with saran wrap and freeze.

Thanks to Debby & Kirby at Kirby the Dorkie for sharing their great recipe and photos!

Weekly Drool Recipe: Cheesy Zucchini Frittata

Fresh. Easy. Quick. That’s sounds like the start of a great recipe! Today, Best Bully Sticks shares a yummy frittata recipe you can make for your dog (or yourself)! A Frittata is an Italian egg dish that is similar to a Spanish omelet. Whatever country of origin, this delectable fried, beaten egg recipe is sure to become a favorite on your pooch’s plate. This recipe also calls for yummy zucchini, which is in season and can most likely be found locally at a farmer’s market near you! Zucchini is full of beta-carotene, calcium, potassium and folates, all of which are great for your pup.

Ingredients
1 baking potato, peeled and thinly sliced
2 tablespoons milk
3 eggs, beaten
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 small zucchini, chopped
1/2 cup shredded Asiago cheese

Directions
1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

2. Place the potato in a small bowl with enough water to cover and microwave at high power until tender, about 8 minutes. Drain.

3. Add the milk and mash with a fork; let cool. Mix in the eggs.

4. In a medium, ovenproof skillet, heat the olive oil, 2 turns of the pan, over medium heat.

5. Add the zucchini and cook until tender, about 5 minutes.

6. Add the potato/egg mixture and stir to combine. Bake until set, about 10 minutes.

7. Sprinkle the cheese on top and bake until melted, about 2 minutes more. Let cool, then cut into wedges.

Recipe Note: If your dog turns his nose up at Asiago, use his favorite cheese as a replacement.

Enjoy & Bone Appétit!
