Weekly Drool Recipe: Ginger Dog Biscuit Treats for Motion Sickness

Dog Treat Recipe: Ginger Dog Biscuit Treats for Motion SicknessYou and your dog are heading on a road trip, when you hear your dog dry heaving & whining in the back seat. Suddenly you look in your mirror to see he’s not looking so good. You quickly rush to pull to side of the road. But before you know it, he's thrown up his morning biscuits all over your leather interior. If you haven't guessed it yet, the diagnosis is motion sickness.

Motion sickness is the result of over stimulation of the inner ear, and--just as in humans--it can make a dog miserable. Nausea can also be due to stress and anxiety since some dogs relate car ride with a vet visit. So if you are traveling with a car sick dog this summer pack some ginger dog treats. Why you ask? Well, ginger helps prevent and relieve motion sickness not only in humans but dogs too. This homemade dog treat recipe will make the trip across country a bit more bearable and less queasy for Fido.

Ingredients: (Makes 5 to 6 dozen cookies)

4 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup molasses
1 cup water
1/2 cup vegetable oil
4 tablespoons ground ginger
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves

Directions:

1. Place all ingredients in a large bowl. Mix thoroughly to combine.
2. Roll out dough on floured surface to about ¼ inch thick. Using a cookie cutter, cut into desired shapes. Combine dough scraps and continue to roll out and cut into shapes until all dough has been used.
3. Place cookies on ungreased foil-lined baking sheets and bake in preheated 325º oven for 30 to 35 minutes.
4. Fido dig in!

**  If your dog is on a special diet always check with your vet about which foods are appropriate & safe.

How To Bring Your Dog to a Summer Picnic: 101 Dog Care Tips- Tip 110

Craving out door fun? No sweat! The Fourth of July means firing up the grill, ultimate frisbee, fireworks mania and pool time. With a ton of picnics and barbecues going underway you and dog are sure to become social butterflies by the end of the dog days of summer. Lots of picnic invites equals more fun in the sun all summer long.

As many dogs would barkingly agree, a picnic at the park is the perfect opportunity to roll in the grass, nap in the shade, and be outside with their favorite humans. Here are few pooch friendly picnic tips from our friends at ehow so your dog does not spoil the festivities but is on his best doggy behavior.

1. Bring special dog picnic treats. Everyone else is getting scrumptious picnic foods so your dogs should, too. Bring a generous supply of healthy treats for your pups, like small pieces of plain grilled chicken, turkey hot dog chunks and small pieces of cheese. This way your dogs will have their own supply of yummy goodies and will be less inclined to eat the people food, which may not be the best for them.

**Picnic leftovers can be very dangerous and fating to dogs. Even if those puppy pleading eyes are saying "yes please", maintain will power and say "No" to your begging dog.

2. Set up a dog zone. Pick a shady spot far enough away from the grill, picnic tables and main activities where your dogs won’t get in the way. Lay down a dog blanket or old sheet. Scatter a few chew toys and treats around the blanket. Hook up the water bowls. If necessary, use tie outs to secure your dogs in the dog zone if they are inclined to lunge at people eating spare ribs.
3. Do a round of introductions. Once your dogs are introduced to the dog zone, introduce them to the people at the picnic. You will know those who do not want to be introduced. Do not force it. This gets your dog used to everyone there so there will be no surprises if someone comes too close to the dog zone.
*Do time-outs. If your dog gets too hyper, calm him down in their dog zone or take him on another romp through the woods to dispel his energy. Never banish a dog to a hot car. It could kill him.
**It's important to know your dogs unique personality, certain dogs do not do well at picnics and around large crowds. If your dog becomes way too obnoxious, perhaps you better take him home. Don’t let him spoil everyone else’s fun.
***Dogs often get excited around running, screaming children, a common picnic addition. Watch your dogs closely and take them for a run in the woods if they start to get too crazy near the children.
4. Treat the dogs when the people eat. Once the steaming ribs, corn and chilled potato salad is on the table, plop some of the special dog picnic treats in the dog bowls you brought. This ensures that the dogs won’t feel slighted or compelled to sit around and bark for people picnic fare.
5. Play. Part of the picnic fun is play and your dogs should be included. Play catch, chase and whatever other games you create with the toys your brought them. Romp with them so they, too, have a grand old time.

How to Ease Your Dog's Fear of Fireworks: 101 Dog Care Tips- Tip 109

While Independence Day is a time to celebrate, your dog may not be as excited. Loud, unpredictable noises from fireworks and patriotic crowds can be scary for your pet. Your dogs keen sense of hearing, nine times more acute than human hearing, may have him cowering behind the couch or covering his eyes. However, your dog is not alone, fear of fireworks and loud noises is a fairly common phobia for many dogs. Even the most confident dog can become spooked by fireworks causing him to panic, bark, run away wagging their tail between their legs or scurrying under the bed. Here are a few tips on  easing your anxious dog's fear of fireworks.

1. Don't change your behavior. Many people feel compelled to baby their dogs when the dog is showing signs of fear. We pet them more than usual, cuddle them, and talk to them in soft voices. Rather than easing a dog's fears, however, this often reinforces the dog's fearful behaviors.

2. Try not to react to the fireworks yourself. If you jump or tense up when you hear fireworks because you are anticipating your dog's fear, you may make his fear worse. Your body language can tell a dog that there is a reason to be afraid.

3. Drown out the sound of the fireworks. Try to turn up the radio or television and keep your windows closed during the fireworks. If the weather permits, a fan or air conditioner (if your dog isn't afraid of those sounds) can help, too.

4. Don't push your dog past his comfort zone. Allow him to hide if he feels more comfortable in his crate or under a bed. Don't pull him out or try to force him closer to the fireworks in an attempt to get him used to the sounds. This may result in an increase in fear, and a frightened dog may become aggressive if pushed past his comfort level.

5. Prescribe sedative or anxiety relief pill. For dogs with severe fear of fireworks a vet may prescribe an anti-anxiety medication or sedative to keep your dog calm and collective during Fourth of July festivities.

Pet Friendly 4th of July Pet Safety Tips: 101 Dog Care Tips- Tip 108

Nothing says we love America then colorful fireworks blasting to the tune of the “rockets red glare”and many of our favorite patriotic tunes. Patriotic American's dressed in their finest red, white and blue attire as they watch in amazement waving their American flags.

But before you head out for your 4th of July outdoor celebrations with dog wagging his or her tail behind you, remember.... safety first. With the 4th of July just around the corner here are some pet safety tips so you and your dog can have an enjoyable and safe Holiday.

1. NEVER leave dog in unattended parked car. Remember a car can reach high temperatures in minutes even with windows cracked. Heat exposure can result in organ damage, heart problems and sudden death. Partially opened windows on hot days do not provide sufficient air flow but can put your pet in jeopardy of being stolen. So, leave your dog at home if you are considering locking them in the car.

2. Stay Shaded. Like humans dogs can also suffer from heatstroke, so avoid by keeping your dog in shaded areas on very hot and warms days. Remember that dogs swear from the pads of their feet and cool off by panting so they need extra help cooling down in the warm weather. Protect your pet from potentially deadly heatstroke by keeping your pet shaded from the sun when the mercury rises.

3. Stay hydrated! Dehydration is the #1 concern and danger during those long summer heat waves. Make sure you have a generous amount of fresh water on hand to quench your dog’s thirst, especially during and after a good game of 4th of July fetch or Frisbee. Keep a large bowl of water under a shaded tree or pavilion to keep the water cool. Fill the water bowl with half water and half ice.

4. Scaredy Dog. Your dog can become easily frightened by 4th of July fireworks and loud celebrations. Make sure your pet is wearing a properly fitted collar with proper identification & tags just in case your pet becomes scared and runs away from home. Better yet, you might want to have your pet micro-chipped as a precaution to make it easier for your pet to be returned home safely & promptly.  Around the 4th of July their appears to be an upsurge in lost pets and strays so keep a watchful eye on your pet whereabouts at all time.

5. Firework-phobic dogs. Knowing your dog’s temperament is half the battle. Fireworks are no blast for some pets, with many dogs becoming easily frightened by unfamiliar loud noises, lightening and thunderstorms. Unfortunately the 4th of July is filled with the deafening sound of loud fireworks bursting with light and loud celebrations. So you can imagine that this can cause some pets to cower, shiver, panic, escape or go in a destructive chewing rampage (put away precious family heirlooms). Leaving your dog indoors (not leashed in the yard) on the 4th of July in a safe, secure, escape proof room of the house with comfy bed, food and water is the safest option. We would advise someone to stay home with the pet, but if your dog is left alone lower the blinds and turn on the tv or radio at normal volume to keep your pet company, this will help to disguise those terrifying loud 4th of July noises. If he is crate trained put him in his crate covered with a blanket to make him feel secure. For preventive measures make sure all doors (doggy doors), windows, and gates are closed and locked securely.

6. Alcohol Free Zone. If you and your dog are invited to any Independence Day picnic or BBQ celebrations remember that alcoholic beverages have the potential to poison pets so NEVER leave your beverage unattended. If alcohol is ingested, your pet could become very intoxicated and weak, severely depressed or could go into a coma. In very severe instances death from respiratory failure caused by alcohol consumption can result.

7. No picnic table and grill scraps. Always be aware of what friends and family are sneaking and forking your dog under the table. While tempting on such a festive occasion, human food (bones, onions, avocado, grapes and raisins) should be off limits at all times to your dog. Some human food may be toxic or dangerous if ingested and cause stomach upset. So advise friends and family to NOT feed your dog table scraps.  Like us your vet would advise you to maintain your dog’s normal & strict diet to avoid potential health problems or an emergency run to the vet.

8. 4th of July Decorations. Remember that your pet may easily mistake your red, white and blue decorations and glow sticks as chew toys. So, make sure to dog proof your home and keep fun glow sticks out of paws reach.
