Montana recently competed at the Cherokee, NC DockDogs event.  She made new friends human & canine and shared some bully sticks with her canine pals.  All the dogs really enjoyed their sample packs.  Here are some highlights and pics of Montana at the event.

Team Montana/ Karman took 2nd place in one of the regular Big Air waves in the Senior Divison.  They also qualified for the Senior Divisional finals and placed 5th overall.  Montana competed in Extreme Vertical with mom for the first time and earned their first Cadet leg for a regional title in this discipline.  The beautiful Smokey Mountain scenery was really a treat as well.  We all had a great time meeting new people and traveling to a new state.

Going to a vet checkup is an important affair and crucial to your pets overall well being.  Vet appointments give you the opportunity to address any health concerns or questions you may have for your pet. When visiting your vet it's always best to provide as much history and background as possible on your pet. In doing so you can ensure your vet can provide the best and most proper treatment plan. Being a responsible and loving pet owner means keeping up with vaccinations and vet check-ups. Here are a few tips for first time vet visitors or if you are switching vets.

1. Gather Medical Records. Obtain copies of previous medical records and bring them along or have them faxed to the new vet office. Records should contain proof of immunizations, test results, diagnoses and treatment of illnesses, including medications. Be prepared to discuss your pet's medical history and don't hesitate to address any concerns about previous, recurring or ongoing sickness or disorders.

2. Talk Eating Habits. Be ready to discuss your pet's eating habits including the type of food and brand, how frequently the pet is fed, whether the pet has a good appetite, if the pet has gained or lost weight recently and what your pet's normal weight seems to be.

Height: 6-9  inches

Weight: 2-6 lbs

Coat: There is a long-haired variety of Chihuahua, but the most common variety is the short-haired Chihuahua. Chihuahuas have two coat types, smooth and long. The smooth coat should be soft and close, with a perceptible sheen. Long coats can be flat or wavy, with an undercoat, fringed ears, feathering on the feet and legs, and a tail that looks much like a plume.

Color: Chihuahua coat comes in a variety of colors including fawn, sand, chestnut, silver, and steel blue. They may also be black & tan or tri-color.

Appearance: The Chihuahua is a very small-sized dog with a proportionately robust build and distinctive facial features. Their body is stout and just longer than it is tall, and they have straight limbs. They have a sickle-shaped tail that curls over the dog’s back or off to one side. They have an apple-shaped head with a short, tapered, pointy muzzle. Their large eyes are round, dark, and can sometimes be ruby or luminously-colored. They have large, triangular-shaped, erect ears that are a distinguishing characteristic of this breed. Chihuahua puppies have a soft spot on the top of their skull that closes as they become adults.

Temperament: The Chihuahua is lively, alert, proud, and makes a good companion. They seek and demand affection, and they are very spunky by nature. They are determined, courageous, and they become very attached to their owner(s). They have a jealous streak, and they will follow their owner’s every move if strangers are present. Some Chihuahuas are difficult to train, but they are intelligent and generally learn quickly. Thus are most receptive to gentle training and positive reinforcement. The Chihuahua doesn’t like to be poked, pestered, or teased, and he may snap if a child provokes him. Because of their small size, they will resort to using their teeth if they feel threatened. This breed may often be noisy and difficult to housebreak. All Chihuahuas should be properly socialized to avoid the onset of aggressive behavior.

Health: The average lifespan of this breed is between 15-18 years. There are also a number of health problems to look out for with this breed. Prone to rheumatism, slipped stifle, colds, gum problems, corneal dryness, secondary glaucoma due to protruding eyes, weight gain and susceptible to fractures. Also some Chihuahuas have a molera, an unclosed section of the skull which can remain open throughout life making them prone to injury. They often wheeze and snore because of their small, short muzzles. This breed is also susceptible to stress.

Crock pots are a cook's best friend! They make dinner fast and easy, revolutionizing the way we cook. Just throw a few ingredients into your crock pot in the morning, set the temperature, go about your day and let the slow cooker do all the work. All you and Fido need to do after a long day is to dish up and enjoy this ready to serve home cooked meal. Even the most inexperienced cook can produce a hearty, delicious meal in a crock pot. We have the perfect recipe to get you excited about cooking for Fido. Mesmerize your dog's taste buds with this delicious one pot wonder, chicken and brown rice!

Ingredients

Base
1 cup brown rice
2 cups water

Vegetables
1/2 lb. green beans, broken into segments
1 medium sweet potato, raw, cut into medium-sized chunks (leave skin on)
3 carrots, sliced into about 1" thick rounds

Protein
2 boneless chicken breasts (with or without skin)

Directions
1. Put all ingredients into the crockpot in the order given (layer, don’t mix).
2. Cook on low for about 8 hours, on high for about 5 hours.
3. When done, stir, breaking up the chicken into small pieces. Everything will be quite soft.
4. Let cool and serve; can be used with a quality kibble or by itself, in a serving size appropriate for your dog’s weight and activity level.

Refrigerate unused portion; keeps up to three days.

Substitutions are allowed! For vegetables, try broccoli florets, zucchini, spinach or any of several types of squash. For the protein source, beef cubes, turkey or lamb also work. Use organic ingredients if possible.

If you don't have a crock pot no problem, just use a large pot and cook dish low on stove top.
