Humans and dogs can both suffer from with celiac disease, a genetic small intestinal autoimmune disorder. Those who are diagnosed with celiac disease have an intolerance to gluten, a protein present in wheat, barley and rye. Gluten allergy can cause damage to the small intestines and prevent food from being properly absorbed by the body. Do keep in mind that pets do not have to be diagnosed with celiac disease to suffer from grain-sensitivity. Since dog's are unable to communicate whether or not they are feeling well it is important to be able to recognize signs and symptoms of celiac disease and gluten sensitivities.

Symptoms of gluten sensitivity include:
Chronic Gastro-Intestinal Upset (diarrhea, constipation, and vomiting)
Chronic Dermatitis (flaky skin, hair loss, redness, bumps, rashes)
Chronic Ear Infections (dark, smelly waxy debris in the ears caused by yeast overgrowth, shaking and scratching head)

What grains contain gluten?
Wheat
Barley
Rye

Check the labels on your dog's food for wheat or grain products. You may have to change what you are feeding your dog. Dogs with celiac disease can usually tolerate corn, rice, gluten-free wheat, dairy foods and poultry. Luckily there are a great selection of yummy wheat- and gluten-free dog foods and treats on the market.

What are some gluten free alternatives for your dog?
Rice
Sweet potato
Amaranth
Buckwheat ( which is not related to wheat, despite its name)
Millet
Quinoa

If you are concerned your pet may have a food allergy, consult your veterinarian.  Blood tests or a change in diet may help to identify specific sensitivities.

We always love getting emails from our customers & readers asking us to feature their dog or favorite breed for our Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed blog series every Thursday. As always we are honored to oblige. We are excited to spotlight the Belgian Malinois.

Height: Male: 24-26; Female 22-24 inches

Weight: 60-65 lbs

Coat: The Belgian Malinois is a shorthaired breed that doesn't require much maintenance. Has somewhat of a coarse and harsh coat, which is strong enough to be weather resistant. Neck hair is slightly longer, and has a dense undercoat.

Color: rich fawn to mahogany, with black-tipped hairs; black mask and ears

Temperament: The Belgian Malinois is confident, exhibiting neither shyness nor aggressiveness in new situations. The dog may be reserved with strangers but is affectionate with his own people. He is naturally protective of his owner's person and property without being overly aggressive. The Belgian Malinois possesses a strong desire to work and is quick and responsive to commands from his owner.

Health: The average life span of the Belgian Malinois is 10 to 14 years. This is slightly higher than the median lifespan of most purebred dogs (10 to 13 years). Like many other large dogs, they have a predisposition to developing the following health disorders

• Hip Dysplasia
• Progressive Retinal Atrophy
• Elbow Dysplasia
• Epilepsy

You or someone you know may have an intolerance to gluten known as Celiac Disease. Like you, your dog can also have the same intolerance. Gluten is found in glutenous grains like wheat, soy, barley, oats and rye and is a common food allergy in dogs. Signs of gluten grain sensitivities may be seen in skin and coat issues, as well as triggered tummy and digestive difficulties. So batter up this gluten free recipe for waffles, perfect snack for dogs with sensitive stomachs and other digestive disorders.

Ingredients
3 ½ Tbsp soft butter or margarine
1 free-range egg
2 cups amaranth flour
1 cup carrot juice
2 Tbsp hazelnuts (if your dog has a nut allergy you could use millet flakes instead)
1 Tbsp baking powder
A pre-heated waffle maker

Makes 5 waffles

Preparation
Place the butter in the food processor or hand mixer and beat vigorously until it is fluffy. Add the egg. Mix together the flour, nuts or rolled oats and the baking powder, and pour the carrot juice into the butter and egg mixture. Combine all of the ingredients. The dough should be a thick mixture which glides off the spoon. If it’s too solid, add more carrot juice; if too runny, add more amaranth flour. Spoon three tablespoons of dough into the waffle maker for each waffle.

Important: Always allow the waffles to cool before eating.
