Is your dog full of boundless energy and bouncing off the wall? Then you must have a hyperactive dog who's bouncy personality can be a handful, quite a challenge and even more tiresome to watch. Unfortunately hyper dog's do not come with a snooze button, if life was that easy. But no worries we have a few tips up our sleeves to calm that overly energetic dog.

1. Give your dog a brisk daily workout. It is important to remember that a hyperactive dog is an energetic dog. A hyperactive dog has boundless energy and he needs a healthy, positive outlet for his energy. Take your dog on long walks or turn him loose in a fenced yard or other area where he can run and expend his excess energy. Consider working out with your dog. For example, if you jog you could take your dog running with you.

2. Set up a doggy playdate. Having someone to romp around and play with can give your hyperactive dog an outlet for his boundless energy. By giving him a friend you also give him someone to keep him company.

3. Vaccinations are updated. Make sure your dog receives his needed vaccinations. The distemper vaccine tends to reduce hyperactivity in dogs.

4. Create a calming home atmosphere. Pets often react to their environment. They can also react to the emotions of their human family members. If your household is loud, boisterous and energetic your dog may be behaving appropriately to his surroundings. Try creating a more quiet, calm environment and see how your dog reacts.

5. Turn on your soft music. Soothe your hyperactive beast with soft music and/or nature sounds. Although this may not work with every dog sound does seem to have a beneficial effect on some dogs. Try classical melodies, the sound of soft rain, a waterfall or even the rhythm of a heartbeat to bring about a calming effect.

6. Obedience Training. Learn basic dog training commands and teach your dog to obey simple commands. Be patient while working to train your dog but if your pet proves difficult to train consider consulting a professional trainer or taking your dog to obedience school. Even the most hyperactive dog will learn proper behavior if taught with love and patience.

7. Create a diversion! Distract and refocus your dog by offering a toy or chew to his divert attention. His favorite toy or treat should do the trick to keep him calm and busy for hours. Use this time to take a nap!

8. Seek Vet Help! Consult with your veterinarian if all else fails to calm your hyperactive pet. Your veterinarian may be able to prescribe a medication to calm your dog and lessen his hyperactive behavior.

We always love getting emails from our customers & readers asking us to feature their dog or favorite breed for our Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed blog series every Thursday. As always we are honored to oblige. We are excited to spotlight the Lousiana Catahoula Leopard.

Height: 20 to 26 inches

Weight: 60 to 90 pounds

Coat: The Louisiana Catahoula Leopard coat is short , dense and smooth, easy to maintain and suited perfectly for their active lifestyle.

Color: Comes in colours that vary from solid colours that are black, red, chocolate, yellow, and brindle and merle colours that vary from blue, gray, black, white, liver, red, and patched. The "leopard" in the name comes from the merled colour of some of the dogs.

Temperament: As with most smart dog breeds, the Louisiana Catahoula Leopard needs to have a fair amount of stimulation in order to stay energized and happy. These dogs are highly intelligent and quick to assess situations, making them perfect helpers in law enforcement. But at the same time, this energy they have can also match perfectly with young children. The Catahoula is gentle and loving with younger children, so unlike other sporting dogs, this breed can be a good addition to a home setting.

Because of their high intelligence, the Catahoula Leopard is often trying to learn new things and will be curious about their environment. This creates a sort of independent manner about them, and they will go off to wander and explore alone if they are compelled to do so.

Spending a lot of time with this dog is imperative for its health and happiness. This is a dog that craves interaction with others and wants to be a part of the family that it belongs to. If you do not have time to interact with this type of dog breed, it may not be a good fit for your home. What may not work for every family is the Catahoula Leopard's tendency to be very overprotective of their family and of their territory. This can cause problems in some situations.

The Catahoula can also become fierce when they are around other dogs, especially when the dogs are the same sex as they are. Though the initial protectiveness may not be seen in the first few years of a Catahoula's life, it's at the age of two that this breed begins to feel it has a responsibility to protect its owners.

What's interesting too is that the Catahoula can become mild-mannered and timid around strangers, not from intimidation, but from hesitation. These dogs are intolerant of strangers and that's what makes them seem fearful in the presence of someone they don't know. With all of these personality features in mind, some more mild-mannered dog owners may not be a good fit for the Catahoula Leopard. The owner needs to be someone that is ready to demonstrate leadership for the dog, as this breed wants to be lead and trained by an authority.

This dog breed is often encouraged in homes that have a lot of room for the dog to roam, but in city or suburbs, they might feel too caged in. When trying to control your Catahoula Leopard, you will want to make sure they attend obedience classes as well as have a place where they can be locked up when you're not around to monitor their actions.

Health: The life expectancy for an Louisiana Catahoula Leopard is 10-14 years. While generally a healthy dog overall, the Catahoula Leopard can encounter some problems during their active life.

This particular dog breed is prone to hip dysplasia, which can cause pain and problems with mobility as the condition progresses. Those Catahoulas with a white coat or with a white face are also prone to issues with glass eyes. These particular colored dogs can often have an 80% chance of developing Deafness in one or both ears.

Occasionally, this dog breed will have troubles with their eyes, leading to tunnel vision, abnormal pupil dilation, and sometimes problems with the eye opening. This is often seen in particular breeds, like the McMillin line.

Some of the Catahoula Leopard Dog breed can also develop cancer in their older years.

Hosting a brunch is a great way to socialize and make new friends. When you are planning the menu don't leave out Fido. Here is a wonderful brunch recipe that is a piece of cake or shall we say pancake. Perfect for a dog with hunger pain!

Yield: 8 cups, which feeds a medium-sized dog for about 2 days at 4 cups per day.

Serving size: 2 cups

Ingredients:

3 cups cooked oatmeal
2 cups active-culture plain yogurt
2 cups cottage cheese
2 Tbsp. safflower oil
1 banana, peeled and coarsely mashed
1 apple or pear, cored and chopped
1 cup ripe mashed mango

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and mix thoroughly. Refrigerate, do not freeze. (Use caution if your pup has not been exposed to dairy.)

**  If your dog is on a special diet always check with your vet about which foods are appropriate & safe.

ABOUT STRAY FROM THE HEART

Stray from the Heart is a non-profit dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and placement of homeless dogs. They provide shelter, veterinary care and loving homes for abandoned, lost, neglected and abused animals. They also provide training and education regarding the protection and care of animals, as well as ongoing support to the individuals and families who adopt from them.

MISSION
Stray from the Heart's mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and find permanent homes for homeless, abused or neglected dogs regardless of where they were born.

VISION
Stray from the Heart takes the World Society for the Protection of Animals' vision to the grass roots level. With the WSPA, they strive to create a world where animal welfare matters and animal cruelty ends.

WHAT THEY DO, AND WHY THEY DO IT
Working directly with domestic and international outreach organizations and centers for Animal Care and Control, they rescue, rehabilitate and find homes for homeless dogs without the benefit of paid employees or a shelter facility to house our dogs. Through their network of foster homes, they strive to offer good dogs, facing uncertain futures due to space and resource constraints, new hope and a better life. They also provide follow-up support to the individuals and families who adopt dogs from them. Stray from the Heart volunteers are always available to provide advice on health and behavioral questions after an adoption. They are here to help potential owners find the perfect canine companion and to help every dog find a perfect forever home. Even so, they have a "no questions asked" policy in cases where a dog must be returned to us. Their main concern is the health and safety of their strays.

WHO THEY ARE
Stray from the Heart is a volunteer-based organization. They are thankful for the dedicated individuals who work tirelessly each day to improve the lives of our Strays, and to insure that their future is blessed with a loving and stable home. They are a member of the New York City Mayor's Alliance for Homeless Animals, collaboration between animal welfare organizations and the City of New York aimed at eradicating euthanasia in our shelters by increasing adoptions.

Financially, they rely on the generosity of our corporate and individual supporters to provide support for our rescue and rehabilitation programs.

HOW'S IT WORKING?
They have had tremendous success in a short time. Since their inception in August 2000, they have been able to rescue and find loving homes for over 1,500 homeless dogs. In addition, they have developed working relationships with international outreach programs, and with local veterinarians who offer essential medical care.

Finally, they are very proud of the international program they have in place. Before founder Toni Bodon implemented this program, many of the rescuers abroad had little or no hope of finding loving and permanent homes for their rescues. With her help, they have been able to reach out, across borders, and share their vision with others who need their help.

THEIR RESCUE AND ADOPTION PROGRAM
They work with their strays until each one finds a loving home. This is what makes Stray from the Heart special. Each dog they rescue requires many hours of care and social rehabilitation. No matter what it takes, they don't give up. They believe that each one wants to trust again, and can become a well-behaved and socialized canine citizen. They take their time. They pride ourselves in their ability to rehabilitate unwanted and neglected dogs, and to pair them up with the right home. They have the patience to wait for that perfect person or family -- where the commitment and attention to long-term companionship and safety is evident.

• Their detailed and comprehensive adoption process is truly the cornerstone of their success.
• They meet each prospective owner, to gauge his and/or her compatibility with their strays.
• They make a home visit, to ensure that the home is prepared and safe for their stray, and that the new parent understands the responsibilities that lie before them.
• They perform follow-up visits to ensure that their strays have indeed found the right place to be.
• They make their staff available to answer questions on health and behavior, make referrals, and offer resources to new parents.

They have seen amazing real life success stories unfold before their eyes: stories of canine survivors who refuse to lose their trust in mankind, no matter what hardships they have endured, stories of people whose lives have been touched and enriched by dogs who were once homeless and desperate for human companionship.
