Best Bully Sticks Breed Spotlight: Silky Terrier

Called a terrier yet classified as a toy breed, the Silky Terrier is a joyful, active dog that loves to snuggle as much as play. This little breed truly is the best of both terrier and toy worlds. A beautiful coat and a lively personality, this dog is a pleasure to have in any living environment. Find out more about this versatile breed in the Best Bully Sticks Breed Spotlight on the Silky Terrier.

History & Background: First called the Sydney Silky, this breed hails from Australia and is the product of interbreeding the Yorkshire Terrier and the Australian Terrier. The goal of this breeding was to improve upon the Australian Terrier’s blue and tan coat. The Silky and Australian Terrier were recognized as the same breed for a long time and the Silky is very often mistaken for a Yorkie. After much breeding, the Silky Terriers were identified as a breed of their own, standards were set and the breed was officially called the Australian Silky Terrier.

After WWII, American servicemen brought home Silky Terriers and then hundreds of Silkies were imported from Australia after gaining popularity in the states. The AKC recognized this breed in 1959. This dog is primarily used as a companion dog, but still exhibits the terrier tendencies for hunting small animals, such as rodents.

Height: 9-10 inches

Weight: average 10 pounds

Coat: Just like the name gives away, the Silky Terrier sports a single, glossy and silky coat. The length of the coat falls below the body outline but isn’t so long that it touches the ground. A Silky has so much hair on the head that it seems to form a topknot. These dogs are groomed so that the hair around the face is parted down the middle and continues this way toward the full length of the body ending at the base of the tail. Despite the profuse amount of hair, the tail is covered, but not plumed and the ears are completely devoid of longer hair. The feet and legs of the Silky should have short hair and shouldn’t be covered up by the body coat. Read more

The Mischievous and Lovable Yorkshire Terrier

Yorkshire TerrierYorkshire Terriers may be small in size but they are big on personality. In fact most Yorkshire Terriers seem oblivious to their small size and are just as energetic and fun-loving as a much larger breed of dog. They absolutely love attention and affection but they also have a more stubborn and bold side to their personality. For a small dog, Yorkshire Terriers are incredibly inquisitive and are always on the look out for a new adventure and perhaps even some mischief along the way!

Most people who own a Yorkshire Terrier will find that they are a much-loved, devoted companion and even quite useful as a little watchdog. The history of these little dogs only goes back 100 years when Yorkies were bred in England for the purpose of catching rats in mines. They were also used as successful hunting dogs and due to their size were often sent to burrow underground after badgers and foxes.

Nowadays, the recognizable Yorkshire Terrier that we all know and love is slightly smaller than the original breed and is considered by some more of a fashion accessory than a hunting animal. The Yorkshire Terrier of today is a softer, more placid animal that loves to be pampered by its doting owner, yet still enjoys regular activity and will also be a terrier at heart.

The Yorkshire Terrier is an incredibly popular breed and most people are able to identify this type of dog on first glance. As the dog is so small in size and light, it is considered as belonging to the Toy breed group and not the more obvious Terrier class. However, it is not just the size of the Yorkshire Terrier that places him here; the animal also possesses a lot of the characteristics associated with the Toy category such as alertness, intelligence, a passion for activity and an inquisitive nature.

The Yorkshire Terrier is an incredibly sociable breed which makes it an ideal companion. They aren’t shy one bit and can be quite bold and fearless at times. They love to play with dog toys, and will stay entertained for a long time. This breed can also be very affectionate yet protective of their family and won’t hesitate to bark should they think danger is approaching. These characteristics make Yorkshire Terriers the ideal candidate for a watch dog. If you are considering getting a Yorkshire Terrier you need to be aware that whilst it is good that they are effective watch dogs, the barking can get annoying. Yorkshire Terriers will bark a lot so if this is something that you do not like, perhaps you need to reconsider your choice.

When it comes to children and Yorkshire Terriers, they do get on well but the relationship will work better if dog and child grew up together. By nature Yorkshire Terriers are quite tolerant of children, it is important to monitor play and ensure that the child knows how to play with the dog in a way that will not cause him to become aggressive. The child needs to understand how to play properly with the dog and not abuse or tease the dog even if they do this unintentionally. Yorkshire Terriers can snap at a child if they behave wrongly towards them.

This breed tends not to get on well with animals unless they grew up together so be careful when introducing them. You will need to socialize the animals well in order for them to get used to each together. In general Yorkshire Terriers do not get on well with cats or any sort of rodent. It is part of the terrier’s instinct to hunt animals like this and it is not easy to get rid of this mind set.

With regards to training, most Yorkshire Terriers will learn pretty quickly as they are quite intelligent creatures. Even though the terrier is only small they still need a fair bit of exercise to keep happy. One 15 minute walk a day should suffice. However, if you are unable to do this everyday you will find that your pet will find ways to keep himself active indoors so make sure he’s got plenty of dog chews and dog toys to keep him going through the day if you do have to leave him alone.

As a rule, Yorkshire Terriers do not shed but they do need regular grooming and clipping. Their hair needs to be brushed regularly otherwise it will get matted.

As a breed, Yorkshire Terriers are great companions and will provide you with lots of love and affection should you choose them as your new pet!

Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on a Breed: We Love Yorkie Poodle Yorkie Poo's

"P" is for Prudence -Yorkie Poo & dog blogger (pic by smilingfrogpets)

"P" is for Prudence -Yorkie Poo & dog blogger (pic by smilingfrogpets)

In honor of our new Twitter friend Prudence (@cowtailchewtoys) and all miniature dog citizens we decided to do a Best Bully Sticks Spotlight on Breed post. Because we would be the first to agree that good things, do come in small packages. The Yorkie poo is one of the many crossbreeds, or hybrid dogs, that have been gaining popularity over the past several years. These small dogs are a cross between the Yorkshire terrier and the toy or the miniature poodle.

Height: 7 to 12 inches tall at the shoulder.

Weight: 3 to 15 lbs

Coat: Since they are a mixed breed, a Yorkie-poo's coat may have characteristics of either a poodle or a Yorkie. Its coat is soft and silky and generally low-shedding, and can be curly, wavy or straight. The coat may even be a combination of the two, such as curly hair on the head and wavy or straight hair on the body.

Color: The Yorkie poo can come in apricot, white, black, silver, blue and tan, black and tan; may be solid, sabled, or distinctively marked.

Appearance: Yorkipoos are a hybrid dog crossed from a Yorkshire terrier and a Poodle. This cross gives a smooth silky wavy coat with a well-balanced and proportioned dog. The ideal Yorkie Poo should be well-proportioned, sturdy and robust in appearance. They typically possess a lively and keen expression. Their ears may drop like a Poodle or may stand up like a Yorkshire Terrier. Their eyes are dark with a lively expression.

Temperament: Yorkie-poos are friendly, energetic and people-oriented dogs. They are intelligent, loyal, loving, affectionate, sensitive, feisty, self confident, clever, playful and sweet loving dogs. Highly trainable, but can be stubborn, though this is usually overcome by patience and consistency in training. They make good family dogs, do okay with children. They are just as willing to run around and play as they are to snuggle up on the couch. They also make good watchdogs despite being so small. Because of the Yorkie-poo's energetic nature this breed requires walks, and enjoys time at dog park or other places where they are allowed to run off-leash.

Yorkipoos are personable, playful, bright and spunky. They enjoy romping around with other pets, cats or dogs. Much like their Yorkshire terrier heritage, they are also brave and very loyal. Like their Poodle heritage, they are quite sharp and quick learners. Yorkipoos are gentle natured and not very mischievous. Smart and capable, they are always eager to learn new tricks.

Health: The average lifespan of this breed is between 12-15 years. Yorkie-poos can inherit problems from either their Yorkie or poodle heritage, especially problems common to all toy breeds. Examples of possible diseases are luxated patellas (where the patella slides off the knee), hypothroidism (thyroid does not produce enough hormones), hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), mitral valve disease (where the valve between the atrium and left ventricle heart chambers does not close properly) and urolithiasis (stones in the urinary tract). Do not let your Yorkie-poo gain too much weight, as this may cause or exacerbate problems.

Incredibly intelligent, Yorkies are also independent, which is perfect for those looking for a dog that doesn't have to be coddled all day long.

Labrador Retriever1. Labrador Retriever – The most popular breed of dog according to the AKC, this breed comes in a variety of colors, but is most loved for their mellow nature which makes them great house pets.
