Weekly Drool Recipe: Healthy Protein-Packed Dog Pizza Treats via Aleksandra Ninova

At Best Bully Sticks we have some pretty amazing customers—who care about their dogs through and through. From tip of the nose to tip of the tail, our customer will go great lengths to get their dog the best and healthiest options for a full and happy canine life. Aleksandra Ninova is no different. She even took some of our safe and healthy treats and made her protein-packed dog treats! We thought we’d share her story and recipe with you so you can recreate this healthy and tasty treat for your pup!

As a new doggie mom, I want the best for my little boy Bruno. I spend a bunch of time researching the best dog food, best feeding techniques (such as rotational feeding – switching food brands every few months), as well as healthiest, natural dog treats. I also love cooking, so I decided to cook up some treats for my little guy. When researching recipes, I saw that just about all (basically all) of them have a lot of flour as an ingredient. Granted, the flour is usually whole wheat, or brown rice, but I was determined to find a way to minimize the amount of flour and starch in my dog treats as dogs do not NEED too much of it (if any at all). So thus I looked around my supplies to see what I could substitute flour for.

Recently, I had ordered a big box of treats for my little guy from Best Bully Sticks (shout out to you, guys – your products rock!) and some of the items were beef sausages, as well as a long chicken sausage and a long bacon sausage. They were all really nice and dry, so I figured that if my food processor can handle grinding them up, they would make the best kind of flour for my dog – MEAT FLOUR! So I ventured off to the kitchen to try my theory out, and lo and behold, it worked! I also added a bit of duck jerky and a dry fish skin for extra protein and Omega 3 fatty acids, but those are optional. The rest of the ingredients are also dog-friendly and healthy for them, giving them even more protein – the egg and cheese, as well as fiber and vitamins – the veggies. There is still some flour used in there just because the mix was still quite wet, but it is significantly less than other recipes for homemade treats that I have seen, and I pledge to constantly work toward reducing the amount used in Bruno’s treats. But I consider this an initial success, and Bruno loved it, so I hope your dogs enjoy it too!

Healthy Protein-Packed Dog Pizza Treats

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 Best Bully Sticks Chicken Sausage
  • 1/2 Best Bully Sticks Bacon Sausage
  • 1 Best Bully Sticks Beef Sausage
  • 1 Dried Fish Skin (optional)
  • 3 strips Duck Jerky (optional)
  • 1 medium carrot
  • 1 radish
  • 2 celery stalks
  • 1 egg
  • 2/3 cup shredded cheese of your choice (I used Colby Jack)
  • 1 small low sodium beef bouillon cube dissolved in 1/4 cup hot water
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste or tomato puree (made of tomatoes and water only, no sugar or other items added)
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil or bacon fat
  • 2/3 cup unbleached flour (whole wheat or brown rice flour would work too)
  • 1 tablespoon dry parsley leaves
  • 1 tablespoon dry rosemary
  • 1 tablespoon turmeric powder

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. In a food processor or blender, grind up beef, bacon, and chicken sausages as well as the duck jerky and fish skin to fine powder/tiny crumbs. Fish skin and jerky may remain a bit stringy, but that is okay.

3. Pour dry meat mix in a mixing bowl.

4. In a food processor or blender grind until finely chopped the carrot, radish, and celery.

5. Pour in the mixing bowl with the meat crumbs.

6. Add all remaining ingredients.

7. Using a spatula or your hands, mix until a homogenous wet mix forms.

8. Pour mix on a cookie sheet or pizza pan lined with parchment paper and even out until about 1/4 inch thick.

9. Bake for 30 minutes.

10. Take out, let cool down just a bit then cut up in desired treat sizes.

11. Serve to beloved pooch(es).

Rescue Spotlight: STAR Foundation

When you love a dog, you usually have respect for all living creatures. The same is true for one wildlife rescue in New York. Today we have the chance of sharing the story of STAR Foundation with you! What started out as a service for missing domestic pets, soon became the spark of change for rescue and rehab of wildlife. Read more about STAR below through the words of Lori Ketcham, Director.

When & Why did you start?

We started about 20 years ago.  One of the founders was retiring from a career as a dog groomer, and the first project of the organization was Pet Line lost and found service.  The goal was to provide a network that would help pet owners locate their missing pets, finders get the pets back to their rightful owners, and the unclaimed pets into new, safe homes.  We also offered pet tags that included a 24 hour service that would get pets home safely if lost anywhere in the United States.  The fees from this service were used to rescue pets who were injured and who would not stand a chance of being adopted unless they received vet care and rehab first.

The founders also were licensed wildlife rehabilitators, and as this became known, the wildlife started to far number the domestic animals.  Wildlife rehab and rescue quickly overtook the organization as the primary mission.  We now care for 100’s of wild animals annually, and have many permanent resident wild and exotic animals who help us with our educational programs, and act as foster parents for the orphans who come to STAR to be raised and released back to the wild.

What's different about your rescue?

We are 100% volunteer.  No one, not even board members, receive a dime for their time and labor.  We get no funding from any company or government agency.  We rely on private donations from regular people who want to help us care for the animals.

We provide a place for the unusual and illegal pets who are seized, abandoned and lost.

We are not open to the general public, as we are required to keep the wild animals protected from the stress of human intervention, and it is very hard to get people to support something they cannot see.

What is the greatest success story or "win" that your rescue has had?

Every successful rescue where the animal is placed in a new home, or released back to its natural habitat is a “win”.  Many of the animals would not be alive if we did not help, and even though they are at risk as wild animals, they still deserve a second chance.  We have placed 3-legged dogs, cats with no eyes, and found sanctuaries to take disabled animals from a blind fox to a 60 pound tortoise, and a neurologic coyote. We recently sent several alligators to a wildlife facility in Florida, which put a dent in our budget but will make a huge difference in the lives of the gators!

What's the most rewarding thing about working at your rescue?

This job is long hours and hard, dirty work.  Some days we can’t save something and it is sad.  But we know we are doing good work, and providing care for as many animals as we can accommodate.  It is a wonderful feeling to fall exhausted into bed at night knowing that you have made a difference to the lives you have touched.  It is also a wonderful way to get to know the best people.  Although the hotline calls can be trying and the people can be demanding and impatient, we are educating the callers one at a time.  Our programs help us bring information to the public, and makes those people better able to respect and protect the wildlife they come in contact with.

What can people do to help your rescue?

Several large rescues that we aided in this past spring brought us about 150 animals that we have been caring for and slowly finding homes for.  Our food, bedding and caging expenses are astronomical, but all who needed vet care have been treated, and are now ready to go.  We hope that anyone interested in a new family member will look at our Pet Finder or Adoptapet sites and fill out an adoption application.  If you are unable to provide a home, you can help us continue to care for the critters until they can be placed by making a donation on our website   http://www.savetheanimalsrescue.org

A HUGE thank you to STAR Foundation for all the amazing work they do! Visit STAR Foundation’s Facebook or website to learn more about this amazing rescue!
